Lautoka: everyday Fiji next door to the international airport

Plan on about $1,400 a month in U.S. dollars for one person in Lautoka, with most single budgets landing between $1,000 and $1,800. A couple should budget around $2,000, and a family of four around $2,900. A one-bedroom apartment in the center rents for about $500 a month, or about $400 farther out.

Lautoka is Fiji's second city and its sugar port, on the west coast of Viti Levu and a short drive from Nadi and the international airport. It suits people who want everyday Fiji at local prices: a big produce market, a long waterfront, and a flight home that doesn't start with a ferry.

Here's the catch: this is a working port, not a resort town. Expats are few, nightlife is thin, and for a beach day you'll head out of town to spots like Saweni Beach. If that sounds restful rather than dull, Lautoka is worth a look.

Getting around

Transport in Lautoka

Day to day, Lautoka runs on buses and taxis. Private companies run buses on set timetables from the central bus station, both around town and along the highway to Nadi and the airport. Taxis are easy to find. Cabs with LT plates use a meter, while LH plates charge fixed fares by distance, so confirm the price before you set off. Carry Fijian dollars in cash for both.

You don't need a car to live in town, but you'll probably want one if you plan regular trips to beaches or across the island to Suva. Rental desks sit just outside the arrivals hall at Nadi International Airport, and you'll need a driver's license in English and a credit card. Traffic drives on the left. The U.S. Embassy advises against driving outside cities after dark, notes that rural roads are often unpaved, and raises concerns about bus safety, so plan longer trips after dark around a taxi.

Community & practical notes

Life in a port town with few expats

Who you'll meet

Foreign residents are few in Lautoka, so your social life will come from neighbors, the market, places of worship and local clubs rather than an expat bubble. That's the appeal for some people but a deal-breaker for others. Nadi is close enough for an evening out when you want more choice.

Healthcare

Lautoka Hospital is the public hospital for this part of Viti Levu, run with Ba Hospital under a public-private partnership with Aspen Medical. A planned rebuild was still waiting on an updated partnership agreement as of July 2026. Fiji's best hospitals are in Suva; for complex care, you may need to leave the country. The U.S. Embassy strongly recommends insurance that covers medical evacuation, hospitals often want payment up front, and Medicare won't pay for care in Fiji.

Internet and remote work

Home internet runs about $50 a month. Plan to work from home rather than counting on a coworking scene, and test your connection before signing a lease.

Limited mobility

Fiji's law bars discrimination against people with disabilities, but the U.S. Embassy reports little enforcement and few accessible buildings. If you use a wheelchair or walk with difficulty, visit first and check the routes you'd use most: home to the market, the bus station, and the hospital.

LGBTQ expats

Same-sex relationships aren't a crime in Fiji, and the constitution bars job discrimination based on sexual orientation. Protections stop there: same-sex marriage isn't recognized, and there's no broader anti-discrimination law. Couples should plan for that around visas, inheritance and medical decisions.

Black Americans

We couldn't find reliable first-hand accounts from Black Americans living in Lautoka. If this matters to your decision, talk with people on the ground before you commit. Expatsi's Fiji guides can help you make those connections.

Retiring here

Lautoka works for retirees who want local prices, a quick drive to the airport, and a quieter life without a big expat circle. Fiji's main route for retirees is a residence permit based on assured income; our Fiji retirement permit guide covers the rules. Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a car in Lautoka?

Not for life in town. Buses run from the central bus station and taxis are easy to find. A car helps for regular beach trips or drives to Suva. Fiji drives on the left, and the U.S. Embassy advises avoiding driving outside cities after dark.

Can I retire in Lautoka?

Yes, if you qualify for Fiji's residence permit for people with assured income. Lautoka suits retirees who want local prices and quick access to Nadi International Airport, and who don't need a large expat community. The main trade-off is healthcare: complex cases may mean treatment in Suva or overseas, so buy insurance that covers medical evacuation.

What is the weather like in Lautoka?

Lautoka is warm all year. Average highs range from about 83°F in July and August to near 88°F from January through March. December through March is the wettest stretch, while June through September is much drier.

Is Lautoka a good place for expats?

It's a good fit if you want everyday Fiji and local prices more than an expat scene. Foreign residents are few and nightlife is limited, but Nadi and the international airport are a short drive away. If you want a small expat community, Savusavu has one, and Suva has Fiji's best hospitals and the most city life.

What is healthcare like in Lautoka?

Lautoka Hospital is the area's public hospital, run with Ba Hospital under a partnership with Aspen Medical. Fiji's best hospitals are in Suva, and serious cases can need evacuation abroad. Hospitals often ask for payment up front, and Medicare doesn't cover care in Fiji, so arrange international health insurance with medical evacuation coverage before you move.

Is Lautoka safe for Americans?

Lautoka scores 52 on Expatsi's safety index, a middle-of-the-road result. The U.S. Embassy says most crime in Fiji is opportunistic. Sensible habits go a long way: take a taxi at night instead of walking alone, never get into a cab that already has other passengers, and keep valuables out of sight.

How much does it cost to live in Lautoka, Fiji?

One person should budget about $1,400 a month in U.S. dollars, with most single budgets between $1,000 and $1,800 (2026 estimates). A couple needs about $2,000 and a family of four about $2,900. A one-bedroom apartment in the center of Lautoka rents for about $500 a month, and about $400 outside the center.
