Budget about $2,100 a month in U.S. dollars if you're living alone in Palmerston North, around $3,100 for a couple, and roughly $4,500 for a family of four (2026 figures). A one-bedroom near the center rents for about $900, and closer to $750 farther out.
Locals call it Palmy. It's a university town of about 81,500 people (2020 count), built around Massey University and a cluster of agricultural research institutes, with Wellington about two hours south. It suits academics, researchers, students and families who want New Zealand life on a modest budget without big-city traffic.
The trade-off is pace. Term time brings energy, and the town goes noticeably quiet when students head home. If you want a beach town or a deep job market outside education and research, compare a few other cities first.

Transport in Palmerston North
In March 2024 Palmerston North became the first New Zealand city with a fully electric bus network, run by Horizons Regional Council. Routes meet at the Main Street bus hub next to The Square, and route 101, which links Massey University, the hospital and the airport, has been the busiest since launch. Pay with a Bee Card, the regional fare card.
The city sits on flat ground, so biking to campus or the center is an easy option. Plan on a car anyway if you'll want regular trips to the coast, the ranges or smaller towns nearby. New Zealand drives on the left.
For Wellington, the Capital Connection train leaves Palmerston North at 6:15 a.m. on weekdays and heads back from Wellington at 5:15 p.m., about two hours each way. Bee Cards don't work on it; buy tickets at the i-SITE in The Square or on board. New trains already funded by the government are meant to bring at least four return trips each weekday plus weekend service, but for now it's one run each way. Palmerston North Airport has Air New Zealand flights to Auckland and Christchurch and no international service, so flights to the U.S. connect elsewhere, typically Auckland.

Community
Community & practical notes
Community: There's no expat neighborhood in Palmy. The university and research institutes bring in people from overseas, and the easiest ways to meet them are through work, campus events, sports clubs and volunteering. Expect a friendly, low-key social life rather than a scene.
Healthcare: Palmerston North Hospital on Ruahine Street is the main public hospital for the city and the surrounding Manawatū, Tararua and Horowhenua districts. It has a 24-hour emergency department, intensive care, a coronary care unit and a neonatal unit. Whether you can use public care depends on your visa, so keep private health insurance until you've confirmed you're eligible, and ask GP practices near your rental whether they're enrolling new patients. Our New Zealand healthcare planner explains who qualifies.
Limited mobility: The flat plain is a real advantage here: the center around The Square has no hills to climb. Still walk the route from any rental to the nearest bus stop and shops before you sign, checking sidewalks and curb cuts along the way.
Remote work: Home internet costs about $50 a month. The time difference is the bigger adjustment, since New Zealand runs ahead of the U.S. and an afternoon call in New York lands early the next morning for you.
Retirement: New Zealand has no simple retirement visa. The Temporary Retirement Visitor visa is only for people 66 or older who invest a substantial sum in New Zealand and also show savings and yearly income. It runs two years, you must hold insurance the whole time, and it can be renewed only if you still qualify. It never becomes residence, so anyone planning to stay for good needs a work or family route. See retirement visa options and our New Zealand guide.

Good to know
Frequently asked questions
How far is Palmerston North from Wellington?
About two hours by road or rail. The Capital Connection train runs once each way on weekdays, leaving Palmerston North at 6:15 a.m. and returning from Wellington at 5:15 p.m. Government-funded new trains are planned to add more weekday trips and weekend service.
Can Americans retire in Palmerston North?
Only through a narrow route. New Zealand's Temporary Retirement Visitor visa is for people 66 or older who invest a substantial sum in New Zealand and show savings and annual income. It lasts two years, requires insurance throughout and never leads to residence, so long-term retirees usually need a work or family pathway instead.
Is Palmerston North safe?
Yes, by most measures. Palmerston North scores 66 out of 100 on the safety index Expatsi tracks, with a crime index of 34. Ordinary precautions apply: lock your car, keep valuables out of sight and stick to lit streets late at night.
Is Palmerston North a good place to live?
It's a good fit if you want a calm, flat, practical town with a university at its center and Wellington within reach. People who want beaches on their doorstep, big-city nightlife or a broad private-sector job market may prefer a larger city.
How much does it cost to live in Palmerston North?
A single person in Palmerston North should plan on $1,700 to $2,500 a month in U.S. dollars, depending mostly on rent and how often you eat out (2026 estimates). A couple typically needs $2,500 to $3,700, and a family of four $3,500 to $5,500.
Do you need a car in Palmerston North?
Not for daily life in town. Palmerston North has a fully electric bus network, and the flat streets make biking easy. A car helps for trips to the coast, the ranges and nearby towns, since regional buses and trains are limited.
What is the weather like in Palmerston North?
Mild and fairly damp. Average summer highs reach about 70F in January and February, while July averages highs near 53F and lows near 42F. Rain falls year-round, adding up to about 43 inches a year, with spring the wettest stretch.
