Living in Eindhoven, where Dutch high tech gets built

Engineers, designers, and their families share a flat, bike-first city in the south, about 80 minutes by direct train from Amsterdam.

A single person in Eindhoven spends around $2,800 a month (U.S. dollars, 2026 figures). A couple needs about $4,200, and a family of four about $6,400. A one-bedroom near the center rents for about $1,600, and about $1,350 farther out. Compared with Amsterdam, where one person needs about $4,100, that's roughly $1,300 a month back in your pocket.

This was Philips's factory town, and it's still where the Netherlands builds hardware. The region markets itself as Brainport: chip-equipment makers, engineering firms, and startups, with ASML's campus just over the line in Veldhoven. It suits engineers, researchers, designers, and the partners and kids who come with them, plus anyone who wants Dutch daily life at a lower rent than the big western cities. The safety index reads 75.

Don't expect Amsterdam's canal rings. Eindhoven's character is in reused industry. Strijp-S, a former Philips site, now holds apartments, offices, coworking floors, and much of Dutch Design Week each October.

Getting around

Transport in Eindhoven

Eindhoven gets around on buses and bikes. Hermes runs the city and regional buses, and its electric fleet goes back to the end of 2016, when it put 43 articulated e-buses into service at once, then the largest electric bus fleet in Europe. From Eindhoven Airport, lines 400 and 401 reach the main station in about half an hour. Riding transit heavily runs about $100 a month, a little under Utrecht and Amsterdam.

The bike does most of the work. The city counts more than 270 kilometers (about 170 miles) of bike paths. Its best-known piece is the Hovenring, a suspended cycling roundabout that opened in 2012 above a busy junction on the route between the center, the airport, and Veldhoven. The ground is flat and distances are short.

Trains connect you to everything else. Direct intercity trains reach Amsterdam Centraal in about 80 minutes, and local trains also stop at Strijp-S on the west side, handy if you work or live there.

The car question has a different answer here than in Amsterdam. Eindhoven is often called a car city and still has a ring road around its center, so keeping a car is less of a fight, and it helps if your job sits on a campus at the edge of town. Plenty of households still skip it.

Community

Community & practical notes

Community: Eindhoven's international crowd is mostly working-age: engineers, researchers, students, and their families. Relative to population, the Brainport region has the most internationals of any Dutch region, with over 67,000 residents of foreign origin in 2021 figures. Holland Expat Center South, backed by the city, the province, and the immigration service (IND), works as a one-stop office for newly arrived knowledge workers and runs welcome events. Partners who want to work can turn to the Expat Spouses Initiative, and groups like the International Women's Club Eindhoven and Expat Kids Eindhoven fill the social calendar. Dutch Design Week takes over the city for nine days every October; in 2026 it runs October 17 to 25.

Schools: International School Eindhoven is a nonprofit Dutch international school on two campuses. Its primary international department follows the UK primary curriculum for ages 4 to 11, and its secondary department teaches the IB Middle Years Programme from 11 to 16 and the IB Diploma from 16 to 18.

Healthcare: Catharina Hospital is the largest general hospital in Eindhoven, a teaching hospital known for its cancer institute and its heart and vascular center, with a 24/7 emergency room in the city. Máxima MC is the second hospital; its emergency room is at the Veldhoven location, while its Eindhoven site handles planned care. Your first step is registering with a huisarts (family doctor), since that's the gateway to specialists. Do it as soon as you have an address.

Limited mobility: The flat ground and newer districts help, and the city has had a Local Inclusion Agenda since 2024 to remove barriers for people with disabilities. Daily friction is real, though. In 2024 local councillors flagged bikes parked across the tactile guide line between 18 Septemberplein and the station. A volunteer group, Eindhoven Toegankelijk, inspects venues and advises the city, and its list of places with accessible restrooms is a good starting point.

Remote work and jobs: Internet runs about $45 a month. Strijp-S is the coworking cluster, with Microlab and the nonprofit Strijp CS among the options. The local job market leans toward high tech, engineering, and IT, and many of those employers hire through the highly skilled migrant permit, which the employer applies for. Americans working for themselves can look at the DAFT self-employment permit.

Retirement: The Netherlands has no dedicated retirement visa, so living off a pension alone isn't a standard route for Americans. The usual workarounds are DAFT with a real small business, a job, or a family tie. Compare retirement visa options in other countries, and read our Netherlands guide for the routes that exist.

Frequently asked questions

Is Eindhoven more affordable than Amsterdam?

Yes. A one-bedroom near the center of Eindhoven rents for about $1,600 a month, against about $2,400 in Amsterdam. Overall, one person needs about $2,800 a month in Eindhoven and about $4,100 in Amsterdam, in 2026 U.S. dollar figures.

How much does it cost to live in Eindhoven?

One person typically spends about $2,800 a month in Eindhoven, with most budgets landing between $2,500 and $3,200 (U.S. dollars, 2026 figures). A couple spends about $4,200, and a family of four about $6,400. Rent is the biggest line: a one-bedroom near the center runs about $1,600 a month.

Is Eindhoven safe?

Yes, by the measures we use. Eindhoven scores 75 out of 100 on the safety index, slightly higher than Amsterdam's 71 and Utrecht's 74, and its crime index is 25.

Is Eindhoven good for families with kids?

It's a strong option for families tied to the tech sector. International School Eindhoven teaches the UK primary curriculum for ages 4 to 11 and the IB from 11 to 18, and groups like Expat Kids Eindhoven help newcomers connect. Budget about $6,400 a month for a family of four, in 2026 U.S. dollars.

How far is Eindhoven from Amsterdam?

Direct intercity trains from Eindhoven Centraal reach Amsterdam Centraal in about 80 minutes. That makes Amsterdam an easy day trip, though a daily commute is long.

Can Americans retire in Eindhoven?

It's harder than in Portugal or Spain, because the Netherlands has no dedicated retirement visa. Americans usually come on a work permit, through a family tie, or under the Dutch-American Friendship Treaty (DAFT) as self-employed people running a real business. Retirees who want pension-only residency generally look at other countries.

Do I need to speak Dutch to live in Eindhoven?

Not to start. Many of the region's tech employers work in English, and Holland Expat Center South handles arrival paperwork for international workers. Learning Dutch still matters for neighbors and local services, and the city and Holland Expat Center South run a program in which local employers provide Dutch lessons for their staff.

What is the weather like in Eindhoven?

Mild and damp. July and August average highs near 73F, while January averages highs near 42F and lows near 34F. Rain is spread through the year, about 30 inches annually, so expect gray stretches in winter rather than deep snow.
