Plan on about $2,700 a month for one person in Birmingham, with most people landing somewhere between $2,200 and $3,200 depending on where they rent and how they live. A couple spends about $3,900 and a family of four about $5,600. A one-bedroom in the center averages $1,400 a month, or about $1,100 farther out. All figures are in U.S. dollars, as of 2026.

Birmingham is Britain's second-largest city by population, with about 1.1 million people as of 2017. It suits Americans who want UK city life at less than half London's center rent, plus hybrid workers who need the capital a day or two a week: London is about an hour and 20 minutes away by train. It's also one of the country's most mixed cities. In the 2021 Census, ethnic minorities made up 51.4% of Birmingham's population.

Who it's not for: anyone hoping for a compact, postcard city you can cross on foot. Birmingham is large and spread out, some areas feel rough, and winter brings short, gray days.

Getting around

Transport in Birmingham

Day to day, Birmingham moves by bus, train and tram; one card covers all three. Swift, the West Midlands smartcard, works on buses, trains and trams across the region. Our monthly budget sets aside about $85 for getting around.

Buses do most of the work outside the center, and National Express West Midlands runs most of them. The West Midlands Metro tram connects Birmingham with Wolverhampton. The city center has three main rail stations, New Street, Moor Street and Snow Hill, with local trains out to the suburbs and nearby towns. New Street is also where the fast trains to London leave from.

For flights, Birmingham International station (BHX) sits about 9 miles east of New Street. A short people-mover ride links it to the airport terminal.

Do you need a car? In the center and inner neighborhoods, no. Farther out, plenty of people drive, because the city covers a lot of ground. If you buy one, check it against the Clean Air Zone first: vehicles that don't meet its emissions standards pay a daily charge to drive into the zone around the center. For short hops, West Midlands Cycle Hire has Beryl bikes and e-bikes around Birmingham and nearby towns.

Living here

Community and practical notes

The expat scene: There's no language barrier to work around here, so Americans tend to blend into ordinary city life rather than an expat bubble. The city is big on students, too: Birmingham City University alone has around 31,000 students from 100 countries. For a first look around, start with the Jewellery Quarter, long the center of British jewelry-making and now full of galleries, restaurants and bars, and Digbeth, a creative district under ten minutes on foot from Bullring and Grand Central.

Healthcare: If your visa requires it, you pay the Immigration Health Surcharge with your application, and you can use the NHS free of charge from the day your visa starts. Your first step after arriving is registering with a GP, the family doctor who refers you on to specialists. The NHS says you don't need ID, proof of address or proof of immigration status to register, though a practice may ask for documents to help move your records. For serious care, Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, run by University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, is a Level 1 trauma center.

Remote work: Home internet runs about $35 a month. The time difference matters more than the connection: Birmingham is five hours ahead of New York for most of the year, so East Coast meetings land in your afternoon and evening.

Limited mobility: Public transit is the easy part. Every West Midlands Metro tram has low floors and two wheelchair spaces, with level access between tram and platform, and Transport for West Midlands says all buses in the region are low floor and wheelchair accessible. Rail stations vary, so check step-free access at the stations you'd use before choosing a neighborhood, and ask about steps and elevators before you sign a lease.

Retirement: Birmingham has a major hospital system, fast rail links and rents well below London's, which makes it worth a look for retirees. The catch is the visa. The UK closed its retired person of independent means category to new applicants in 2019, so there's no route built for retirees. Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Is Birmingham, England safe?

Birmingham scores 54 out of 100 on our safety index and 46 on crime. Like most large cities, it varies by neighborhood, and some areas feel rough. Spend time in a neighborhood, including after dark, before you sign a lease there.

Do you need a car to live in Birmingham?

Not if you live in or near the center. Buses, trains and the tram cover daily life, and one Swift smartcard works on all three. Farther out, many people drive. Older cars that fail the Clean Air Zone emissions standards pay a daily charge to enter the zone around the center.

Can Americans use the NHS in Birmingham?

Yes, once you're living there on a visa. If your visa requires it, you pay the Immigration Health Surcharge with your application, and you can use the NHS free of charge from the date your visa starts. Register with a GP, a family doctor, soon after you arrive.

What is the cost of living in Birmingham, UK?

A single person spends about $2,700 a month in Birmingham, in U.S. dollars as of 2026, and most budgets fall between $2,200 and $3,200. Rent is the biggest variable, so where you live in the city decides which end of that range you land on.

How far is Birmingham from London?

About an hour and 20 minutes by train on the fastest services from Birmingham New Street to London Euston. That makes a weekly office day in London workable for hybrid workers.

Can Americans retire in Birmingham?

You can, but the UK has no visa built for retirees. Its retired person of independent means category closed to new applicants in 2019, so Americans need another route, such as family or work. Our guide to retirement visas compares countries that do offer one.

What is the weather like in Birmingham?

Mild and damp. Average highs sit near 68F in July and near 44F in January, and about 27 inches of rain falls across the year, spread fairly evenly from month to month. Winter days are short and often gray.
