Budget around $1,100 a month in U.S. dollars if you're living alone in Takoradi, $1,600 as a couple and $2,300 for a family of four (2026 estimates). Treat those as a midpoint: few expats report prices here, so a single person's range runs from about $800 to $1,400. A one-bedroom near the center rents for about $400, closer to $250 farther out, and an inexpensive local meal is about $4. In Accra, the same single budget is about $1,800, and central one-bedrooms go for around $900.
Takoradi is the working half of Sekondi-Takoradi, the twin city that anchors Ghana's Western Region. It has a deepwater harbor, Market Circle as western Ghana's main trading hub, and an economy that changed after the offshore Jubilee oil field was found in 2007 and began producing in 2010. Most foreigners here are tied to oil, shipping or the companies that serve them.
It suits people with a contract in that world, remote workers who want the coast without Accra's rents, and retirees who are fine living a few hours from the capital's specialists. Busua's beach is about 28 miles west for weekends. It's a weaker fit if you want an arts scene or a large, social expat circle.

Getting around
Transport in Takoradi
Most daily trips happen by taxi, tro-tro or app. Bolt runs rides and food delivery in Takoradi, and it's the easiest start for newcomers because the fare is set before you get in. Shared and charter taxis are everywhere, and tro-tros, the shared minibuses, run fixed routes for small cedi fares once you learn where they stop. A commuter train also makes several runs a day between Sekondi and Takoradi.
Central Takoradi around Market Circle works on foot for errands, but it's hot, sidewalks come and go, and open drains line many streets. Most people walk short hops and ride the rest. Traffic in and around town can be heavy at busy times.
You don't need a car for daily life in town. One helps if you want regular beach weekends at Busua or prefer to drive to Accra yourself, which is about 137 miles east and roughly three and a half to four hours by car. STC coaches leave Accra from the Circle terminus, and VIP and other private bus companies run the route too. If you'd rather fly, Africa World Airlines and Passion Air connect Takoradi Airport, which the Ghana Air Force operates, with Accra in under an hour.

Community
Community & practical notes
Community: Takoradi's foreign community grew with the oil industry and still revolves around it: engineers, offshore crews, port and logistics staff, and their families, many here on company contracts. Outside that circle there's little organized expat life. Newcomers tend to meet people through work or church, and head to Accra for its bigger returnee and expat networks. Takoradi Technical University adds a student crowd to the city.
Healthcare: Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Takoradi is one of Ghana's ten regional hospitals and takes referrals from across the west of the country, with an eight-bed intensive care unit. It handles routine and emergency care, but complex specialist treatment usually means a trip to Accra. Carry international health insurance that includes medical evacuation.
Remote work: Fixed home internet costs about $40 a month. Remote workers keep a mobile data plan as backup for outages, and a home with a generator or inverter makes workdays far smoother. Local jobs for Americans sit mostly in oil and gas, shipping and their contractors; most other Americans here earn their income from abroad.
Limited mobility: Takoradi is hard going for wheelchair users. Open drains and gutters are a known barrier here, as in Ghana's other large cities, and sidewalks are patchy. Ghana's Persons with Disability Act gave public places until August 2016 to become accessible, and compliance is still widely lacking. Taxis and tro-tros aren't adapted, so the workable setup is a regular private driver and a ground-floor home. If you rely on a wheelchair, spend time here before signing a lease.
Retirement: Ghana doesn't offer a visa built for retirees. Retirees usually live here on a residence permit from the Ghana Immigration Service, and foreigners who've lived in Ghana for more than five years can apply for an indefinite residence permit. If you're of African descent, the Right of Abode is the route designed for you. Takoradi works for retirees who want coastal living on about $1,100 a month and can accept specialist care being a few hours away. Compare retirement visa options and read our Ghana guide for the country-wide picture.
