Braga: northern Portugal's university city on about $1,800 a month

The expat scene: Small, and that shapes everything about landing here. Braga's foreign population leans toward EU remote workers, University of Minho researchers and students, and a thin but growing layer of Americans, so there's none of the ready-made English-speaking infrastructure that Lisbon has. English is common under 40 years old and around the university, much less so with older neighbors and out in the parishes. Most people who settle in well end up in Portuguese classes, which are offered by the government.

Healthcare: Hospital de Braga is the public anchor, part of the ULS de Braga network covering roughly 1.2 million people across the district; it's the referral hospital for most of the Minho. Hospital Privado de Braga and Hospital Lusíadas Braga cover scheduled and specialist care privately, though most foreign residents carry insurance to skip public waiting lists. Genuinely rare specialties still route to Porto.

Remote work: Home fiber runs about $40 a month, and the coworking layer is modest but real, with Braga Business Center on Avenida da Liberdade and smaller spaces near the center and the university. The tech reputation isn't marketing either: Bosch Car Multimedia is one of the larger employers here and works closely with the University of Minho. Local salaries are low, so this works best when your income comes from elsewhere.

International schools: Colégio Luso-Internacional de Braga, in Gualtar near the university, takes children ages 3 - 18 and teaches most classes in English. It's the main international option inside the city; Porto's larger British and international schools are about 40 minutes away if you want more to choose from.

Limited mobility: Better than you'd expect from a two-thousand-year-old city, with real limits once you leave the middle. Portugal's national tourism board publishes an accessible itinerary through the historic center and rates most of those streets as smooth, evenly paved and in good repair, with crossing kerbs low and mostly level, helped by how much of the core is pedestrian-only. TUB buses carry ramps, lifting platforms, reserved spaces and braille stop buttons. You can call ahead for an adapted vehicle; the train station is adapted too, though its counter for passengers with special needs is over 80 cm high. Obstacles are the older churches and museums, several entered up a flight of steps, and the ground once you leave the flat center. Braga climbs at the edges and Bom Jesus do Monte is a hill rather than a stroll: wheelchair users generally reach that sanctuary by the road behind the church, rather than the staircase or funicular. Only a small share of the places mapped here for step-free access are marked accessible, so view any apartment's elevator and your daily route in person.

Retirement: Braga fits retirees who want a city rather than a resort, and the arithmetic is friendly: a couple's $2,700 a month goes further here than on the Algarve, and the safety index of 80 sits well above Lisbon's and Porto's. Portugal's D7 is the usual route, asking about 920 euros a month in passive income for one person and 1,380 for a couple as of 2026, with Social Security counting as eligible.
