One person lives comfortably in Oviedo on about $1,800 a month in U.S. dollars, a couple on about $2,900, and a family of four on about $4,300. A one-bedroom near the center rents for around $850, or about $650 farther out. For comparison, the single budget in Bilbao, farther east along the coast, is about $500 higher.
Oviedo is the capital of Asturias, a tidy, green city of about 224,000 people with a university, a pedestrian old town and cider bars along Calle Gascona. The Picos de Europa and the beaches are each under an hour away. It suits people who want a safe, mid-size Spanish city where daily life happens on foot: retirees who don't need sunshine, remote workers who want quiet, and anyone who'd rather hike than lie on a beach.
Here's the catch: the weather. Oviedo gets about 40 inches of rain a year (1,029 mm), with November the wettest month and July the driest. Summers are mild, with average highs near 75F in August, and winters are cool and gray, with January highs near 54F. The foreign community is small and English is thin on the ground, so you'll want Spanish.

Getting around
Transport in Oviedo
Most people here live without a car. The city buses are run by TUA, which has operated Oviedo's urban service since 1981, and the fleet is low-floor with ramps. Our data puts a month of local transit at about $35. Older residents should ask the city about its discounted bono-bus for pensioners.
The rail and bus stations sit side by side at the end of Calle Uría, the main shopping street, so leaving town is easy. Oviedo is the hub of the Asturian rail network: Cercanías commuter trains run to Gijón and other towns, and the old narrow-gauge FEVE lines head out toward the coast and inland valleys. Since November 2023, the high-speed line through the Pajares base tunnel has cut the trip to Madrid to about three hours. ALSA coaches cover the rest of Spain from the bus station next door.
Asturias Airport is about 29 miles (47 km) away on the coast, linked to Oviedo by ALSA coach. Its routes include Madrid, Barcelona, London and Paris, so flying home to the U.S. means a connection.
The old town and much of the center are pedestrian streets, with camera-controlled access for residents' cars. A car earns its keep for weekend trips to the Picos de Europa and the coast, not for daily errands.

Community
Community & practical notes
Who you'll meet
Oviedo's foreign community is small, so expect to build your circle on purpose rather than fall into one. The University of Oviedo keeps the city young; it's the easiest place to find English speakers and events. Outside university circles, plan on Spanish for the landlord, the bank and the town hall.
Doctors and hospitals
Asturias runs its own public health service, SESPA. Its flagship, the Hospital Universitario Central de Asturias (HUCA), moved into a new campus at La Cadellada in 2014 and has more than 1,000 beds. It's the region's main referral hospital, so serious care doesn't mean a trip to Madrid. Your visa decides whether you start on private insurance or public coverage, so check that before you budget.
Limited mobility
Workable in the center. City buses are low-floor with ramps, many stops have adapted shelters and live arrival screens, and the pedestrian core takes cars mostly out of the picture. Off the main streets, gradients vary a lot by barrio. Walk the exact street at the exact time of day you'd use it before signing a lease.
Working remotely
Home internet runs about $35 a month in our data. The city council runs a coworking space, Talud de la Ería, aimed at freelancers and new businesses, with internet included and no long commitment, and there are private coworking options downtown. Spain's digital nomad visa is the usual route for Americans working for U.S. employers.
Retiring here
Oviedo fits retirees who want a walkable, safe city with a major hospital in town and don't mind rain. The usual route is Spain's non-lucrative visa, which is built for people living on pensions and savings. Spain taxes its residents on worldwide income, so talk to a cross-border tax advisor first. Compare programs on our retirement visa page, or start with the Spain guide.

Good to know
Frequently asked questions
How far is Oviedo from Madrid?
About three hours by high-speed train since the line through the Pajares base tunnel opened in November 2023. Asturias Airport, about 29 miles (47 km) from the city, also has flights to Madrid.
Do you need a car to live in Oviedo?
No. City buses, commuter trains to Gijón and other Asturian towns, and the high-speed line to Madrid cover daily life and most travel. Much of the center is pedestrian. A car mainly helps for trips into the mountains and along the coast.
How rainy is Oviedo?
Oviedo averages about 40 inches (1,029 mm) of rain a year. November is the wettest month and July the driest. Expect gray, damp stretches from late fall through spring, which is what keeps the countryside around it so green.
Is English widely spoken in Oviedo?
Not widely. You'll hear it around the university and among younger people, but landlords, banks and government offices work in Spanish. Plan on learning Spanish before or soon after you move.
Is Oviedo safe for Americans?
Yes. Oviedo scores 85 out of 100 on the safety index we track, with a crime index of 15. Use the usual city habits with bags in busy bars and on buses.
How much does it cost to live in Oviedo, Spain?
A single person in Oviedo typically spends between $1,600 and $2,000 a month in U.S. dollars, and a couple between $2,500 and $3,200, as of 2026. Rent is the biggest variable: a one-bedroom outside the center runs about $550 to $750 a month, and one in the center about $750 to $950.
What visa do Americans need to move to Oviedo?
Americans need a Spanish long-stay visa to live in Oviedo. Retirees and people living on savings usually use the non-lucrative visa, and remote workers for foreign employers use the digital nomad visa. Both are national Spanish visas, so living in Oviedo doesn't change the requirements.
Is Oviedo a good place to retire?
For the right person, yes. It's compact, walkable and safe, buses are low-floor, and Asturias's main referral hospital, HUCA, is in the city. It's a poor fit if you want sun, beaches outside the door, or a large English-speaking community. The usual route for retirees is Spain's non-lucrative visa.
