Netherlands · Highly Skilled Migrant Visa
The Dutch Permit Your Employer Applies For
Get hired by a company on the IND's register, clear the salary line for your age, and the decision takes weeks instead of months.
There's no form here for you to file. A Dutch company on the IND's sponsor register files it, and that one fact shapes your whole job hunt. Here's what the 2026 rules ask for and what they leave out.

Who applies
Your job search is the visa application
Only a recognized sponsor can file
The rule is blunt: your employer applies, you don't. Around 10,000 Dutch organizations sit on the public sponsor register, from household-name tech and banking employers down to ten-person startups; the list gets refreshed every month. If the company hiring you isn't on it, this permit isn't on the table.
So check the register before the interviews
Recognition is optional and isn't cheap: 5,080 euros for a company, about $5,840, or 2,539 euros for a startup or a firm with 50 staff or fewer. That's why two similar offers can come with completely different immigration answers.
What nobody asks you for
No points test. No labor market test. No Dutch. And no diploma: this permit turns on your salary and your employer's status, not your education. That's the cleanest difference from the EU Blue Card, which wants a three-year degree or five years of equivalent work.

About that data card
Our database runs behind the IND here. That $1,500 is a budget estimate, not something anyone pays the IND. The 2026 fee is 423 euros, about $485, and it lands on your employer. The 90 days, and the 3 months beside it, are the legal ceiling for a decision rather than the wait you should expect. The IND's guidance is that a file from a recognized sponsor gets decided in a couple of weeks. The salary line is also thinner than "varies by age" suggests: age sets two of the three thresholds, and the third, 3,122 euros a month, turns on how recently you graduated.

Reading the offer
Inside the salary number

Holiday pay sits outside the number
Every Dutch contract carries 8 percent vakantiegeld, holiday money paid as a lump sum in May, and the threshold ignores it. A thirteenth month does count so long as the contract spells it out and it reaches you monthly in twelve equal parts. Overtime, tips and anything handed over in kind count for nothing.
There's a second money test
Your pay also has to match the market rate for the job, roughly what other people in that role earn, and the IND can ask UWV, the Dutch benefits agency, for an opinion. An offer engineered to land one euro over the line can still come back refused.
What changes in January 2027
Recruited from abroad, you can keep a slice of your salary out of the tax base for up to five years. It's 30 percent through 2026 and a flat 27 percent from January 1, 2027 for anyone whose ruling began in 2024 or later. It stops at a 262,000 euro salary.
The rest of the package
You can start before the card exists
When the decision letter says so, you're allowed to work while the plastic is still being printed.
A partner who isn't tied to your job
Your partner's document reads work freely permitted: any employer, or self-employment, with no extra permit.
Your own clients on the side
The back of the card allows freelance work next to the job. A second salaried role would need a TWV on top.
No entry visa for Americans
A U.S. passport skips the MVV sticker, so you fly over once the permit itself is granted.
Up to five years on one document
The permit matches your contract, to a five-year ceiling, and renews while the job lasts.
Year five opens two doors
Permanent residence, or a Dutch passport with A2 Dutch and the civic integration exam.

Switching jobs
The number that moves when you do
The permit doesn't travel with you
It belongs to the employer who filed it. A new company has to be a recognized sponsor too, and has to file a fresh application. You can't start there until the IND decides or issues temporary permission.
Turning 30 is fine. Turning 30 and switching isn't
Stay put and the under-30 line of 4,357 euros follows you past your birthday. Change employers at 30 or older, and the 5,942 line applies instead. That's a 36 percent jump in the salary you need, set off by a job move rather than a candle on your cake.
If the job ends first
You get three months to find qualifying work or six months once you've held the permit for two years, which took effect in May 2026. That window starts the day your contract ends and can't outlast the permit itself.
The hard part
The permit is the fast half

Getting hired from abroad is the bottleneck
Dutch postings run in English across tech, finance, engineering, life sciences and the agrifood cluster, and a recognized sponsor can hire you without asking anyone's permission. What it can't do is shorten its own interview loop. Filter your search by the register and spend your time where sponsoring is already routine.
Your salary doubles as your housing application
The good news is that a salary clearing the IND also clears a Dutch landlord's income screen, since the floor sits well above the average Dutch wage of about 53,400 euros. The rest of the rental market is unkind: the country is roughly 400,000 homes short and good listings go in a day or two, so book somewhere temporary before you fly.
Then the five-day errand
Your first errand is the gemeente. Register there inside five days of landing and receive a BSN, the number that has to exist before a bank account or a payslip will work. Basic health insurance is compulsory within four months and runs about 160 euros a month, roughly $185, per adult.

Moneycorp
Currency Exchange
Rent, deposit and a furnished apartment all land before your first Dutch payslip does. Moneycorp handles dollar-to-euro transfers and can fix a rate in advance.

Lingoda
Language Learning
This permit never asks you to speak Dutch. Permanent residence and citizenship both do, at A2 level. Lingoda teaches it in small online classes that fit around a job.
The questions that come up before you sign
Do I need a college degree to qualify?
No. The Dutch knowledge-migrant permit is decided on your salary, your contract and whether your employer is a recognized sponsor. A degree matters for the EU Blue Card and for the graduate salary rate, but not for this one.
How long does the IND take to decide?
Ninety days is the legal limit. The IND's guidance is that applications filed by a recognized sponsor are usually decided within a couple of weeks. You can begin work once the positive decision reaches your employer, before the residence card is printed.
Can my spouse work in the Netherlands on my permit?
Yes. A partner who comes with a highly skilled migrant gets a residence document marked work freely permitted, which covers any Dutch employer and self-employment, with no separate work permit and no salary test.
What salary do I need for the highly skilled migrant permit in 2026?
At 30 or older, 5,942 euros gross a month, about $6,830. Under 30, 4,357 euros, about $5,010. Recent graduates can qualify at 3,122 euros. None of those figures include the 8 percent holiday allowance, and they reset every January. Parliament is weighing a bigger-than-usual rise for 2027.
What happens if I lose my job?
You have three months to find qualifying work with another recognized sponsor, or six months if you have held the permit for two years or more. The new employer has to file a new application before you can start working there.
Do I have to speak Dutch?
The permit has no language condition, and plenty of the international employers on the sponsor register work in English. Dutch shows up later: permanent residence and citizenship both ask for A2 Dutch and the civic integration exam after five years of residence.
Do I need a job offer before I can apply for the Dutch highly skilled migrant visa?
Yes, and it goes further than that: you cannot apply at all. Only a Dutch employer listed on the IND's register of recognized sponsors can file this permit. The offer comes first, and the employer does the paperwork.
How do I find Dutch employers that can sponsor a visa?
The IND publishes its register of recognized sponsors and updates it monthly, with around 10,000 organizations on it. Check it before you apply for a job, and ask about sponsor status in the first interview rather than the last.
Does the highly skilled migrant permit lead to permanent residence?
It can. Five years of continuous legal residence opens the door to a permanent residence permit, and years on this permit count toward it. Naturalizing usually means giving up US citizenship, unless you are married to a Dutch citizen.
