Gouyave, Grenada's west-coast fishing town

A walkable waterfront town of about 3,400 people, a weekly street fish fry, and a drive down the coast to St. George's for the hospital and big shopping.

Plan on roughly $1,400 a month for one person in Gouyave, $2,000 for a couple, or $2,900 for a family of four. Our estimates for a town this small are rough, so treat $1,000 to $1,800 as the realistic range for a single person. A one-bedroom in town rents for about $450, or around $350 a little outside it. A meal at a local spot runs about $7, and home internet costs about $65.

Gouyave is the main town of St. John parish, with about 3,400 people at the 2008 count. It's known for Fish Friday, when streets close for a fish fry and street fair, and for the nutmeg processing station locals call the Nutmeg Pool. It suits people who want to live in a working Grenadian town rather than an expat enclave, who earn or draw their income from outside Grenada, and who don't mind driving south to St. George's for shopping and hospital care.

It's a poor fit if you want a ready-made circle of other Americans, a coworking desk, or a hospital nearby. Grenada's main expat area is in the south, a long way from here.

Getting around

Transport in Gouyave

Inside Gouyave you can walk to most things: the waterfront, the shops, the fish fry and the health center sit close together. Sidewalks are narrow or missing on some stretches and street lighting is patchy, so take care walking after dark.

Leaving town means a minibus, a taxi or your own car. Minibuses are privately run vans that work the coast road toward St. George's. You flag one down by hand at the roadside, tell the conductor where you're getting off, and pay a few Eastern Caribbean dollars in cash. They run roughly 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays, thin out fast in the evening, and run less on Sundays and holidays. The U.S. State Department advises extra caution on buses and in taxis after dark.

There's no Uber or other major ride-hailing app in Grenada, and taxis aren't metered, so agree on the fare before you get in. If you drive, it's on the left, and you'll need a temporary Grenada driving permit: EC$60 (about $24), good for three months. Roads are narrow, winding and steep once you leave the coast.

So do you need a car? Not for daily life in town. But shopping, specialist care and the airport all mean a trip south, and the buses stop early. If you want evenings out in the south or airport runs on your own schedule, budget for a car or a taxi driver you trust.

Living here

Community and practical notes

The expat scene: Gouyave is very local. Your neighbors here are fishing families and people who work the nutmeg trade, not other Americans. There's no expat club in town, so social life comes from showing up: Fish Friday, church, the shops along the main road, and Fisherman's Birthday on June 29, when crews from all over Grenada come to race boats. Fish Friday has run less regularly since Covid, so check that it's on before you plan around it. English is the official language, and you'll hear Grenadian Creole on the street.

Healthcare: The Gouyave Health Centre, a newer polyclinic run by the Ministry of Health, is in town for everyday care. Hospital care means a drive to St. George's. Grenadian hospitals often want payment or proof of insurance before they treat you, and a serious case can mean an airlift off the island, so carry coverage that includes medical evacuation.

Remote work: Home internet runs about $65 a month. Flow and Digicel both sell fiber home service in Grenada, but confirm coverage at the exact address before you sign a lease. Storms and power cuts cause outages, so keep a mobile hotspot as backup. We couldn't find a coworking space in Gouyave. If you earn from abroad, look at Grenada's remote work visa.

Safety and storms: The safety index for Gouyave is 63. The U.S. State Department raised Grenada to Level 2 in January 2026 for crime and says violent crime can occur anywhere on the island. Police response is slower than at home. Hurricane season peaks in September, and older towns still show damage from the 2004 storm, so plan your roof, documents and insurance around it.

LGBTQ expats: Grenada criminalizes consensual sex between men under sections 430 and 431 of its Criminal Code, with penalties of up to 10 years in prison. No law protects LGBTQ people from discrimination. In a town this small, weigh that carefully before you sign anything.

Black Americans: Grenada is a majority-Black country. At the 2001 census, 89.4% of Grenadians were of African descent and another 8.2% mixed. Here you won't be a racial minority. What will mark you out in Gouyave is being a newcomer.

Limited mobility: The town center is compact and close to the sea, which helps. Sidewalks are narrow or missing in places, roads climb steeply inland, and minibuses are vans you have to climb into. The map data behind the accessibility grade is thin for a town this size, so treat that score as rough. Rent ground floor near the main road and plan on a car or a regular driver.

Retirement: Gouyave works for retirees who want warm weather (average highs from about 79F in January to about 82F in September), a real community, and low costs, and who are fine driving south for specialists. Grenada has no dedicated retirement visa among the routes we track, and Americans can stay up to 90 days without a visa.
