Living in Labasa, the working town of Fiji's North

What a quieter, cane-country life on Vanua Levu costs, how safe it is, and how far you'd be from a hospital and an international flight.

Plan on about $1,300 a month for one person in Labasa, with $1,000 to $1,600 as the realistic spread depending on how you live. A couple should budget around $1,800, and a family of four around $2,600. A one-bedroom apartment in the center rents for about $400 a month, or about $300 farther out. These are 2026 estimates in U.S. dollars from a thin data set, so treat them as a starting point, not a quote.

Labasa is the largest town on Vanua Levu and the hub of Fiji's North. It sits on a river delta in Macuata Province, surrounded by cane fields, with the island's only sugar mill on the edge of town. Downtown is busy with curry houses, sari shops and the market, a reflection of its large Indo-Fijian community.

It suits people who want everyday Fiji on a modest budget and don't need other foreigners around: retirees on a fixed income, people with family ties to the North, and anyone happy to trade nightlife for quiet. If you want a beach out your door or a ready-made expat crowd, Labasa isn't that place.

Getting around

Transport in Labasa

In town, most errands happen on foot or by taxi. The main taxi stand and a bus stop sit right by the market, and taxis run on the meter for short trips. For a day out, agree on a price with the driver first. Buses run often between Labasa and Savusavu on a sealed road, but don't expect printed timetables, and some routes skip Sundays.

A car isn't essential if you live near the center, but it helps for reaching villages and the coast. Many roads beyond the main routes are gravel. The U.S. State Department advises against driving outside towns after dark and also flags safety concerns with public buses and minivans, which is one reason taxis do so much of the work here.

The bigger question is getting off the island. Labasa Airport is at Waiqele, about 4 miles from the center, with daily domestic flights to Nausori (for Suva) and Nadi, where international flights land. The hop from Nadi takes about an hour. If you fly Fiji Airways from abroad, book straight through to Labasa to keep your international bag allowance; the domestic limit is 15 kg (33 lb). The slower option is a ferry from Viti Levu to Nabouwalu or Savusavu plus a bus, anywhere from about 4.5 to 11 hours door to door. The last bus from Nabouwalu to Labasa leaves around 4 p.m., so time your crossing.

Community and practical notes

What daily life asks of you here

Community

Labasa is home to about 28,000 people and very few foreigners. There's no expat scene to plug into, so your circle will come from neighbors, the market and local life. If you'd like help testing the fit before you sign a lease, Find Your Feet Fiji puts together Fiji relocation plans, and Lynette Wilson works as a Fiji local guide.

Healthcare

Labasa Hospital is the referral center for every health center and hospital on Vanua Levu, so it's where you'd go for anything serious. Here's the catch: in August 2025, the Fiji Sun reported the hospital had gone two years without CT scans, sending patients to Suva or Lautoka. Ask whether that's been fixed before you count on it. Fiji's hospitals usually want cash or proof of insurance before admitting you, mental health care is limited even in bigger cities, and the State Department strongly recommends medical evacuation coverage. Hunter Schultz, a healthcare coach, and ExpatInsure, which offers global health insurance, can help you set that up.

Internet and remote work

Home internet runs about $55 a month. If your income depends on video calls, test the connection at the exact address you're considering before committing.

Retiring in Labasa

Labasa works for retirees who want a slow routine and a budget around $1,300 a month for one person. The trade-off is distance from specialist care, so build flights to Suva or overseas into your plans. Compare countries on our retirement visas guide, and see Fiji's visa routes in Moving to Fiji.

LGBTQ expats

Fiji doesn't criminalize consensual same-sex relationships. Same-sex couples can still run into problems with marriage, adoption, inheritance and pensions, so get wills and other paperwork in order before you move.

Black Americans

We couldn't find firsthand accounts from Black Americans living in Labasa, and you'd likely be one of very few. A scouting trip with a local guide is the best way to get a feel for daily life.

Limited mobility

Labasa is a tough place to get around with a wheelchair or limited mobility. Fiji requires new public buildings to be accessible, but few older ones are, enforcement is weak, and accessible vehicles are scarce.

Frequently asked questions

What is the weather like in Labasa?

Labasa is warm all year, averaging about 77F. December through March is the wet season, with average highs near 85F. May through September is much drier and a little cooler, with July highs near 81F and lows near 72F. Rainfall totals about 77 inches a year.

How much does it cost to live in Labasa, Fiji?

One person should plan on about $1,300 a month in Labasa, with $1,000 to $1,600 as a realistic range, and a couple about $1,800. A one-bedroom apartment in the center rents for about $400 a month. These are 2026 estimates in U.S. dollars.

Are there many expats in Labasa?

No. Labasa has about 28,000 people and very few foreigners, so there's no organized expat scene. Most social life comes from neighbors and the town itself. If you want more foreigners around, Savusavu or Fiji's main island of Viti Levu are worth comparing.

Is Labasa safe for Americans?

Generally, yes, with ordinary precautions. Labasa scores 55 out of 100 on our safety index, and the U.S. State Department rates Fiji at Level 1, its lowest advisory level. The department advises against walking alone after dark and against driving outside towns at night.

Is Labasa a good place to retire?

It can be, if you want a quiet routine on a modest budget, about $1,300 a month for one person. The main drawback is specialist care: Labasa Hospital serves all of Vanua Levu, but serious cases can mean a trip to Suva or Lautoka, so medical evacuation coverage is wise.

How do you get to Labasa from the U.S.?

Fly internationally into Nadi, then take a domestic flight of about an hour to Labasa Airport, about 4 miles from town. Book through on Fiji Airways to keep your international bag allowance. A ferry to Nabouwalu or Savusavu plus a bus is cheaper but can take up to 11 hours.
