Budget about $1,700 a month for one person in Nadi, with $1,300 to $2,100 as the realistic range depending on how you live. A couple should plan on around $2,400 and a family of four around $3,500. A one-bedroom apartment near the center rents for about $650 a month, or about $500 farther out. These are 2026 estimates in U.S. dollars built on limited data, so use them to plan, not to sign a lease.
Nadi is a working town more than a postcard. Main Street is shops, banks and the market, a large Hindu temple anchors one end of town, and boats run out to the Mamanuca islands. The best beaches take a drive or a boat ride to reach.
It suits people who want short trips home and a practical base on Fiji's dry western side: retirees who want doctors and flights close by, remote workers who travel often, and anyone happy to drive to the beach rather than live on one. If you picture a quiet village with palms out the window, Nadi will feel too busy.

Getting around
Transport in Nadi
Most people in Nadi get around by taxi or by car. Taxis with LT plates run on the meter around town; for anything longer, agree on the fare before you get in. Local buses run along Queens Road, and you pay with an e-Transport card from a Vodafone shop, since drivers don't take cash. The U.S. State Department advises against public buses and minivans for safety reasons, and says not to let a taxi pick up other passengers during your ride.
The town center is walkable for errands in daylight. After dark, the State Department's advice is not to walk alone. Plenty of residents end up with their own car, and rentals are easy to find at the airport. If you drive, stay off roads outside town at night, when poor lighting, stray animals and potholes make them hazardous.
For longer trips, Lautoka is about 20 minutes by car, and express buses to Suva take around four hours. Living beside Fiji's main international airport means no domestic flight before the long trip home.

Community
Many of the foreigners you'll see in Nadi are travelers on their way to the islands, so your circle will take some building. If you'd like help sizing up the town before you commit, Find Your Feet Fiji puts together Fiji relocation plans, and Lynette Wilson works as a Fiji local guide.
Healthcare
Nadi Hospital is the public hospital in the center of town, and Nadi Medical Centre is a private option nearby. Lautoka Hospital, another public hospital, is about 20 minutes away by car. Call 917 for an ambulance. Plan to pay up front: the State Department says hospitals and doctors often want payment before treatment or admission, psychiatric care is limited even in larger cities, and it strongly recommends medical evacuation coverage. Hunter Schultz, a healthcare coach, and ExpatInsure, a global health insurer, can help you sort out coverage before you go.
Internet and remote work
Home internet runs about $55 a month. If your work depends on video calls, test the speed at the exact address before you sign anything.
Retiring in Nadi
Nadi works for retirees who want a budget near $1,700 a month for one person and a hospital and international airport in the same town. Compare your options in our retirement visas guide, and see Fiji's routes in Moving to Fiji, including the residence permit for people with assured income.
LGBTQ expats
Fiji doesn't criminalize consensual same-sex relationships, and its constitution bans discrimination based on sexual orientation. The State Department notes couples can still hit problems with marriage, adoption, inheritance and pensions. Get wills and powers of attorney done before the move.
Black Americans
We haven't found firsthand accounts from Black Americans living in Nadi yet. A scouting trip, ideally with a local guide, is the best way to judge how daily life would feel for you.
Limited mobility
Nadi is hard going with a wheelchair or limited mobility. Fiji requires new public buildings to be accessible, but accessible vehicles are scarce, so check any apartment, clinic and route you'd rely on in person.
