Living on Amwaj Islands, Bahrain's marina suburb by the airport

Man-made islands off Muharraq, 2.8 miles from Bahrain International Airport. What it costs, how safe it is in 2026, and who it suits.

Plan on about $1,800 a month for one person on Amwaj Islands. A couple needs around $2,800 and a family of four about $4,200. A one-bedroom apartment in the center rents for roughly $900 a month, or about $700 farther out.

Amwaj is a cluster of man-made islands with a marina, lagoon walks and waterfront apartments, calmer and more spread out than Manama. It suits families and remote workers who want water views and don't mind driving for nearly everything.

Here's the catch for 2026: the U.S. State Department rates Bahrain Level 3, Reconsider Travel, because of terrorism and the threat of Iranian drone and missile attacks since hostilities began in February 2026. Read the current advisory before you sign a lease.

Getting around

Transport in Amwaj Islands

You'll want a car. Amwaj connects to Muharraq by two causeways, each about 0.6 mile long, and everything off the islands, from the big grocery run to an office in central Manama, means a drive. In light traffic, central Manama is 15 to 20 minutes away; weekday rush hours stretch that.

Bahrain's public buses run more than 20 routes between governorates, and you pay with a rechargeable GO Card. We couldn't confirm a route that serves Amwaj itself, so don't plan a car-free life around the bus.

For trips without your own wheels, Uber and Careem both work in Bahrain, and Bahrain Taxi sends licensed metered cabs through its app. Uber's official city list names Manama, so expect longer waits for a pickup out on the islands.

On the islands, the marina and lagoon paths are pleasant on foot from November to March, when average highs run from about 69F to 82F. From May through September, average highs sit between 97F and 104F, and midday walks are hard going.

Community

Community & practical notes

Who you'll meet: Amwaj was the first project in Bahrain to offer freehold land to expat residents, so Bahrainis and foreigners live side by side here, many in apartments around the marina and the lagoon. Social life runs through beach clubs, cafes and hotel restaurants more than street life. If you keep a boat, the marina has more than 140 berths.

Healthcare: Across the causeway on Muharraq, King Hamad University Hospital in Busaiteen is one of Bahrain's main emergency hospitals. It's run by the Royal Medical Services, has about 410 beds, and earned Joint Commission International accreditation in November 2019. Budget for private health insurance from day one, and check whether your employer or residence route includes it.

Safety in 2026: Our data gives Amwaj a safety index of 60. The bigger issue this year is regional. Beyond the Level 3 rating, the State Department says only family members 18 or older may join U.S. government employees who work in Bahrain. That's a useful signal if you're weighing a move with kids.

LGBTQ expats: Bahrain's 1976 penal code doesn't ban private, consensual same-sex acts between adults, defined as 21 and over. Same-sex relationships aren't recognized, though, and there's no legal protection from discrimination. Indecency and morality laws are used against gender and sexual minorities; "imitating the opposite sex" can bring up to a year in prison, while convictions can end in deportation for foreigners. Get local advice before you move.

Black Americans: We couldn't find reliable, current reporting on Black Americans' experience in Bahrain, and we won't guess. Before you commit, talk to Black Americans who've lived there and ask about housing, work and dealing with police.

Limited mobility: The islands are man-made and flat, so there are no hills to fight. Distance is the hard part: Amwaj is built around the car, and we couldn't find an official accessibility guide for it. Check for elevators, step-free entrances and close parking before you sign a lease.

Working online: Home internet runs about $45 a month in our data.

Retiring here: Flat waterfront living and a major accredited hospital nearby make Amwaj worth a look for retirees with steady income, once the security picture settles. Bahrain's route for retirees is the Golden Residency for retirees. Compare your retirement visa options or start with our Bahrain guide.
