Bahrain's Golden Residency for retirees: a BHD 4,000 pension and no Bahraini income tax
Permanent residency in about five working days, if your pension clears roughly $10,624 a month. What counts, what it costs, and why the war with Iran belongs in your decision.
Written for Americans retiring on a large pension who have never lived in Bahrain, and checked against the Interior Ministry's own service pages in September 2026.

Who it fits
One number decides it, and it's a big one
This Golden Residency category is for retirees who don't live in Bahrain. You qualify on a single figure: a pension certificate showing at least BHD 4,000 a month, about $10,624. That's roughly $127,500 a year. You don't have to buy property or find an employer.
If you worked in Bahrain for 15 years or more, a separate retiree category asks for an average pension above BHD 2,000 instead.
Who it's not for: most American retirees. Our data puts a comfortable month in Bahrain at about $2,750 for a couple, so this bar is set to attract wealth, not to match living costs. If your income is Social Security plus a 401(k), read the FAQ on what counts before you gather paperwork.

The process
How the application works
The application runs online through Bahrain.bh as the Golden Residency for Retired Non-Resident Foreigners service, handled by Nationality, Passports and Residence Affairs (NPRA).
What goes in the file
- A pension certificate showing at least BHD 4,000 a month
- A passport valid for more than six months
- Six months of bank statements
- A medical insurance certificate issued in Bahrain
- Your previous Bahrain residence permit, if you ever had one
NPRA can ask for more documents at any time, so keep originals within reach.
What it costs
Each person pays BHD 5 to apply and BHD 300 to issue, so a couple pays BHD 610, about $1,616. You pay by card, within 30 days of approval, or the application is canceled automatically. After that it's permanent residency, with the same BHD 300 administrative fee every 10 years.
Bringing family
Your spouse, children and parents can be added. Each pays the same fees and needs a Bahrain-issued insurance certificate. Spouses add a certified marriage certificate, and children a birth certificate each.
The insurance piece
Bahrain's Sehati law makes employers pay health insurance for foreign workers. With no employer, you'll buy the Bahrain-issued policy yourself. Get a quote early; we couldn't find published prices for applicants over 65.
Confirm the stay rule before you plan
Fragomen's 2022 launch alert said holders had to live in Bahrain at least 90 days a year. Current summaries of the official Golden Residency FAQ say there's no minimum stay, and advisers say holders can live abroad without losing status. We believe the newer rule, but ask NPRA in writing before you plan a part-time year.
Before you commit
What a five-day approval doesn't tell you

Security comes first in 2026
On August 27, 2026, the State Department rated Bahrain Level 3, Reconsider Travel. It cites terrorism and the threat of drone and missile attacks since U.S.-Iran hostilities began on February 28, 2026. If you're choosing a home for the next 20 years, weigh that before the pension math.
Tax-free in Bahrain, not at home
Bahrain has no personal income tax and doesn't tax capital gains or income paid from abroad. The U.S. still taxes your pension and Social Security, and the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion covers neither. Bahrain isn't on the IRS list of tax treaty countries.
Residency isn't a work permit
Holders can work only after getting separate work authorization, so even a part-time consulting job means another permit.
A home, not a second passport
Summaries of Bahrain's nationality law put naturalization at 20 consecutive years of legal residence. Plan on your U.S. passport staying your only one.
Stricter laws on private life
The State Department notes that sex outside marriage is a criminal offense in Bahrain. Unmarried partners also can't use the family route, which asks for a certified marriage certificate.
If your pension falls short of BHD 4,000
Golden Residency Visa (Real Estate)
- Own one or more properties in Bahrain
- Passport valid for at least 6 months
- Copy of Central Population Registry (CPR) card if resident
Golden Residency Visa (Foreign Residents)
- Already a resident in Bahrain (employee or retired)
- Passport valid for at least 6 months
- Copy of CPR card
Golden Residency Visa (Talented Foreigners)
- Demonstrated significant contribution in field of expertise
- Passport valid for at least 6 months
- Copy of ID card
Who to call
Three calls to make before you file
None of our partners are based in Bahrain, so these are the people for the parts of the move that travel with you.
Start with health coverage, since the file needs a Bahrain-issued policy. Then the tax call, because the income that qualifies you is the same income the IRS keeps taxing. Last, the paperwork: ask whether your U.S. pension letter needs an apostille, since we couldn't confirm Bahrain's rule.

Retiring to Bahrain: quick answers
Is Bahrain safe for American retirees in 2026?
The State Department rated Bahrain Level 3, Reconsider Travel, on August 27, 2026, citing terrorism and the threat of drone and missile attacks since U.S.-Iran hostilities began on February 28, 2026. Check the current advisory before you apply or travel.
How long does Bahrain's retiree Golden Residency take, and what does it cost?
The official processing time is five working days. Each person pays a non-refundable BHD 5 application fee (about $13) and a BHD 300 residency fee (about $795), which must be paid within 30 days of approval or the application is canceled. The BHD 300 fee recurs every 10 years.
Does Social Security count toward Bahrain's BHD 4,000 pension requirement?
Bahrain's official service pages ask for a pension certificate but don't say which kinds of income count. Whether Social Security, 401(k) withdrawals or annuities qualify isn't published, so ask Nationality, Passports and Residence Affairs (NPRA) before you pay the application fee.
How much pension do I need for Bahrain's Golden Residency as a retiree?
If you've never lived in Bahrain, you need a pension certificate showing at least BHD 4,000 a month, about $10,624 (September 2026). Retirees who worked in Bahrain for 15 years or more qualify with an average pension above BHD 2,000.
Can my spouse and parents join me on Bahrain's Golden Residency?
Yes. A Golden Residency holder can add a spouse, children and parents. Each family member pays the same BHD 5 and BHD 300 fees and needs a Bahrain-issued medical insurance certificate. A spouse also needs a certified marriage certificate.
Can I work in Bahrain on a retiree Golden Residency?
Not on the residency alone. Holders can work only after getting separate work authorization, so any job or paid consulting in Bahrain needs its own permit.
Do I have to spend part of the year in Bahrain to keep Golden Residency?
Probably not. When the program launched in 2022, holders had to spend 90 days a year in Bahrain, but current summaries of the official Golden Residency FAQ say there's no minimum stay. Confirm the rule with NPRA in writing before you plan around it.
Will I pay tax on my pension if I retire to Bahrain?
Not in Bahrain, which has no personal income tax. You'll still owe U.S. tax: pensions and Social Security aren't foreign earned income, so the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion doesn't cover them, and Bahrain has no income tax treaty with the U.S.
