Plan on about $2,000 a month in U.S. dollars for one person on Bequia, with most singles landing between $1,500 and $2,500. A couple needs about $2,900, and a family of four about $4,200. A one-bedroom in or near Port Elizabeth rents for around $1,000 a month, or about $750 farther out. Those are our 2026 estimates, and on an island this small they're rough, so use them as a starting point for your own budget.
Bequia suits people who want a slow, sea-facing life in English, with sailboats in the harbor and enough shops and restaurants along the Port Elizabeth waterfront that you aren't crossing the water for every errand. If you can live on a pension, savings or remote income, it's one of the easier small islands to settle into.
It's a harder fit if you need regular specialist care, a local job, or evenings on the mainland. The island's hospital has 12 beds and no trauma capacity, according to the U.S. Embassy, so anything serious starts with a trip to Kingstown.

Getting around
Transport in Bequia
On the island, most people ride dollar vans: closed minibuses that the Bequia Tourism Association calls the least expensive way to reach most of Bequia. Fares run EC$1 to EC$4 (about 40 cents to $1.50), paid once you're on board, and you can catch them in Port Elizabeth. Taxis charge fixed rates posted at the tourism office, and drivers usually take U.S. or EC dollars. Around Admiralty Bay, water taxis cost about EC$15 (about $5.50) one way to the beaches, and less to cross the harbor.
To drive, you'll need a temporary local permit on top of your U.S. license. The State Department says police stations and rental agencies issue them. Several companies on the island rent cars and jeeps by the day or week. If you live close to Port Elizabeth, vans and your own feet cover daily errands; in the outer bays, a car starts to earn its keep.
The ferry to Saint Vincent is the line you'll plan around. The Bequia Express and Admiral ferries cross to Kingstown in about an hour, carry cars, and charged EC$25 (about $9) one way as of July 2025. On the most recent timetable we found, the last weekday boat left Kingstown at 6 p.m., so a late appointment in town can turn into a night there. The State Department also notes that weather and sea conditions can affect crossings.
For flights, Bequia's small airport at Paget Farm has daily scheduled service to Barbados. Long-haul flights from the U.S. land at Argyle International Airport on Saint Vincent, followed by a taxi to the Kingstown wharf and the ferry over.

Community
Community & practical notes
Community: Bequia is small, and social life runs through the Port Elizabeth waterfront and the boats in Admiralty Bay. English is the everyday language, and the EC dollar has been pegged at EC$2.70 to US$1 since 1976, so a budget you set in dollars holds steady. One handy detail: you can extend a visitor stay at the Bequia port instead of taking the ferry to Kingstown.
Healthcare: Port Elizabeth Hospital is the island's medical center, with 12 beds and no trauma capacity as of the U.S. Embassy's November 2024 listing. The government approved plans in 2023 to add X-ray, ultrasound and a larger emergency area; we couldn't confirm that work is finished. Serious cases go to Milton Cato Memorial Hospital in Kingstown, which has 211 beds and CT scanning. The State Department says hospitals often want payment up front, and patients pay their own transfer costs between hospitals. Carry international coverage with medical evacuation. ExpatInsure, our health insurance partner, sets up those plans, and healthcare coach Hunter Schultz can map what you'd handle on the island and what would mean leaving it.
Remote work: Home internet runs about $70 a month in our data. We couldn't find a coworking space to recommend, so test the connection at a specific address before you sign a lease.
LGBTQ expats: This isn't a safe legal home. Consensual same-sex activity is a crime carrying up to 10 years in prison, and no law protects against discrimination based on sexual orientation, according to the State Department. In 2024 the High Court upheld those laws. Couples should weigh that seriously before moving.
Black Americans: We couldn't find a published account, from the State Department or anyone else, of what Black Americans experience living on Bequia, and we'd rather say so than guess. Spend a few weeks on the island and talk with Black expats elsewhere in the Eastern Caribbean before you commit.
Limited mobility: Plan carefully. The State Department says the country's disability law isn't enforced and to expect limited accessibility in transport, lodging and general infrastructure. Dollar vans are crowded minibuses, and ferry boarding is worth testing in person. Look for a ground-floor home close to Port Elizabeth's shops and the hospital. Visit before you sign anything.
Retirement: Bequia suits retirees who want warmth all year, with January highs averaging about 81°F, and who can live with a 12-bed hospital and a ferry ride to bigger care. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines has no retirement visa. Americans get six months on arrival, extensions cost EC$75 (about $28) a month, and long-term residence goes through the Prime Minister's Office in Kingstown. Our Saint Vincent and the Grenadines guide covers each route, and our retirement visa page compares countries that do offer a pension visa.

How much does it cost to live on Bequia?
Our 2026 estimate is about $2,000 a month for one person, $2,900 for a couple and $4,200 for a family of four, all in U.S. dollars. A one-bedroom near Port Elizabeth rents for about $1,000 a month. Data for an island this small is thin, so treat these as rough figures and test them during a long stay before you commit.
What is the weather like on Bequia?
Warm all year. Average highs run about 81°F in January and about 85°F in September and October, measured at the nearby Saint Vincent airport station. February and March are the driest months, and from June through November rainfall rises sharply, overlapping the Atlantic hurricane season.
Is Bequia LGBTQ-friendly?
Not legally. Consensual same-sex activity is a crime in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, with penalties up to 10 years in prison, and the High Court upheld those laws in 2024. No law protects against discrimination based on sexual orientation.
What is healthcare like on Bequia?
Port Elizabeth Hospital has 12 beds and no trauma capacity, according to the U.S. Embassy. Serious cases go by ferry or air to Milton Cato Memorial Hospital in Kingstown. Hospitals often ask for payment up front and patients cover transfer costs, so international health insurance with medical evacuation is essential.
How do you get to Bequia from the U.S.?
Most people fly into Argyle International Airport on Saint Vincent, take a taxi to the Kingstown wharf, and ride the ferry to Bequia, which takes about an hour and costs EC$25 (about $9) one way. Bequia's own small airport also has daily scheduled flights to and from Barbados.
Can I retire on Bequia?
Yes, but there's no retirement visa. U.S. citizens are admitted for six months, and visitor extensions cost EC$75 (about $28) a month, available at the Bequia port. To live there long term, you apply for residence through the Prime Minister's Office in Kingstown. Healthcare is the bigger question: the island's hospital is small, so plan for international insurance with evacuation.
Do you need a car on Bequia?
Not if you live near Port Elizabeth. Dollar vans cost EC$1 to EC$4 (about 40 cents to $1.50) a ride, taxis charge fixed rates, and water taxis cross Admiralty Bay. If you rent a car, you'll need a temporary local driving permit from a police station or rental agency on top of your U.S. license.
Is Bequia safe for Americans?
The State Department rates Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Level 1, its lowest advisory, as of July 2026. It says crimes of opportunity such as petty theft, burglary and car break-ins do happen, along with some violent crime. Lock up, keep valuables off the beach, and ask neighbors about local habits.
