Plan on about $1,900 a month in U.S. dollars for one person in Belize City, $2,700 for a couple and $3,900 for a family of four. A one-bedroom near the center rents for around $850, and closer to $600 farther out. Those are midpoints: a single person's month can land anywhere from about $1,400 to $2,400, mostly depending on rent and how often you eat out, where a basic meal runs about $8.

This is Belize's biggest city, home to about 64,000 people as of 2022, and the place where the country's logistics meet: the international airport, the private hospitals and the water taxis out to Caye Caulker and San Pedro. It suits Americans with a reason to be in town, like a job, a business or frequent medical visits, who'd rather keep living in English than learn a new language.

Here's the catch: the safety index sits at 30 out of 100, and both Canada and the UK single out gang violence in Southside, south of Haulover Creek. Choose your side of town before you choose your apartment.

Getting around

Transport in Belize City

Taxis do most of the work for people without a car. Use only registered cabs, which carry green license plates. Agree on the fare before you get in and pay cash. Canada's travel advisory says ride-hailing apps aren't available in Belize, so you'll be calling or flagging cabs rather than booking them on your phone.

Walking is fine for short daytime errands in the parts of town you know, but Canada's advisory says to avoid going out after dark, so plan on a taxi home at night. City and intercity buses are the budget option; the UK notes they're poorly maintained and many have no seatbelts.

Where Belize City earns its keep is getting out of it. Scheduled water taxis run to Caye Caulker and San Pedro, and buses and shuttles head west to San Ignacio.

Do you need a car? If you'll live here a year or more and leave the city often, it makes life easier. Budget for something sturdy, though: roads are potholed and poorly lit, bridges can flood after storms, and there's no emergency roadside assistance, so most trips are best done in daylight.

Community & practical notes

Living in Belize City day to day

The expat scene: Thin. Most Americans pass through Belize City on the way to the cayes or Cayo rather than settling here, so expect a city that runs on Belizean rhythms, not expat ones. The upside is that English is the official language, so paperwork, banking and small talk all happen in English from day one.

Healthcare: This is the strongest argument for living here. Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital is the country's main public referral hospital and has an intensive care unit, and the two private hospitals expats lean on, Belize Medical Associates and Belize Healthcare Partners, both run 24-hour emergency rooms. The limits are real, though: Belize has no level one trauma center and no radiation therapy, and many residents cross into Chetumal, Mexico, for a wider range of specialists. Hospitals may expect cash up front, and medical evacuation is expensive, so coverage that includes evacuation is worth the premium.

Remote work: Home internet runs about $60 a month. Test the connection at the exact address before you sign a lease; the published price says nothing about the speed you'll get. Local salaries are low; this works best when your income comes from outside Belize.

Limited mobility: Belize City sits at sea level, so there are no hills to fight, but that's where the good news ends. Flooding after heavy rain is a known risk, and very few places in the city are mapped as step-free. Visit any apartment, clinic and daily route in person before committing.

Retirement: Belize City makes sense for retirees who put hospital access first. Belize's Qualified Retirement Program is open from age 40 and asks for $2,000 a month in retirement income from outside the country, plus at least 30 consecutive days in Belize each year. Our Belize retirement program guide covers the details, our retirement visa guide compares it with other countries, and our Belize moving guide covers where else retirees settle. Factor in the climate too: average highs run from about 82F in January to about 89F in May and August, and hurricane season lasts from June through November.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a car in Belize City?

Not for daily life in town, where registered taxis cover most trips. A car helps if you'll travel around Belize often. Roads are potholed and poorly lit, bridges can flood after storms and there's no roadside assistance, so drive in daylight when you can.

What is the weather like in Belize City?

Hot and humid all year, with an average temperature of about 80F. Average highs run from about 82F in January to about 89F in May and August. March is usually the driest month and October the wettest, and the city gets about 77 inches of rain a year. Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30.

Can you retire in Belize City?

Yes. Belize's Qualified Retirement Program accepts applicants 40 or older with at least $2,000 a month in retirement income from outside Belize, and holders must spend at least 30 consecutive days a year in the country. Belize City suits retirees who want to live near the country's main hospitals; others choose the cayes or the Cayo District and come into the city for appointments.

Is Belize City safe for Americans?

It takes more caution than a typical U.S. city. Belize City scores 30 out of 100 on Expatsi's safety index. Canada advises against non-essential travel to Southside Belize City, south of Haulover Creek, because of gang violence. Canada also advises avoiding going out after dark, and the UK recommends using only registered taxis with green license plates.

Is Belize City a good place for Americans to live?

It works best for people who need to be there: for a job, a business or regular access to hospitals and the international airport. English is the official language, which makes the move easier. If you mainly want beaches or a quiet small town, look at Caye Caulker, San Pedro or San Ignacio instead.

How much does it cost to live in Belize City?

One person should budget about $1,900 a month in U.S. dollars, with a realistic range of about $1,400 to $2,400. A couple needs about $2,700 and a family of four about $3,900. A one-bedroom apartment in the center rents for around $850 a month, or about $600 farther out.

What is healthcare like in Belize City?

Belize City has the country's main hospitals, but care is limited by U.S. standards. Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital is the main public referral hospital, and Belize Medical Associates and Belize Healthcare Partners are private hospitals with 24-hour emergency care. Belize has no level one trauma center and no radiation therapy, so many residents travel to Chetumal, Mexico, for specialists and carry insurance that covers medical evacuation.
