Budget about $1,700 a month for one person in Kingstown, with $1,300 to $2,100 covering most ways of living. A couple should plan on around $2,600, and a family of four around $3,800. A one-bedroom near the center rents for about $800 (most fall between $600 and $1,000), or about $600 farther out. These are 2026 estimates in U.S. dollars built on a thin data set, so use them to plan and check real listings before you sign anything.

Kingstown is where Saint Vincent and the Grenadines does its business. The ministries, the main public hospital, the big supermarkets, the minibus terminal and the ferry dock for Bequia all sit in or near the center, and about 24,500 people (2025) live in the town itself.

It fits people who want island life with errands in reach: retirees who'd like to live close to a hospital, remote workers who need a solid home connection, and anyone who plans to live on the quieter south coast and come into town a few times a week. If a slower, beach-town pace is the goal, Bequia is about an hour away by ferry.

Getting around

Transport in Kingstown

Most people get around on minibuses, which locals call vans. They leave from the bus terminal at the New Kingstown Fish Market and stop wherever you flag them, not at fixed stops. Under the fares the government approved in September 2022, a hop of a mile or less costs EC$2, and a ride out to Calliaqua, Glen or Villa on the south coast costs EC$2.50.

Taxis aren't metered. The government sets the rates, so confirm the price before you get in. The 2022 list put a trip within Kingstown or its nearby areas at EC$13, about $5.

Do you need a car? Not if you live in town or along a busy van route. It helps if you settle on the south coast or in the hills and want to shop on your own schedule. Driving is on the left. As a visitor you can get a temporary driving permit from the Licensing Authority for up to six months, with your U.S. license, your passport and a fee of EC$125.

Argyle International Airport is about 5 miles from town. For Bequia, the Bequia Express ferry runs daily from the Kingstown dock and crosses in about an hour.

Community and practical notes

Settling into Kingstown

Who you'll meet

Kingstown is a Vincentian town first. Our data rates the American community in the country as tiny, so most of your neighbors, coworkers and friends will be locals. There's no U.S. embassy on the island; the embassy in Bridgetown, Barbados handles Saint Vincent.

Healthcare

Milton Cato Memorial Hospital in Kingstown is the country's main public hospital, with emergency, surgical and medical care, and patients pay user fees. A new acute care hospital is going up at Arnos Vale, about 2.2 miles east of town. As of May 2026 it was still under construction. It's meant to add cardiology, neurology with stroke care and major surgery, so until it opens, plan for some complex cases to mean a flight off the island. Hunter Schultz, a healthcare coach, and ExpatInsure, which offers global health insurance, can help you set up coverage that includes medical evacuation.

Internet and remote work

Home internet runs about $55 a month. Flow, Digicel, Spectra, Karib Cable and SilverCast all sell broadband. In August 2026, Digicel said a fiber expansion would put its fiber within reach of 84% of homes on St. Vincent once finished. Ask for a speed test at the exact address before you sign a lease.

Retiring in Kingstown

Kingstown makes sense for retirees who want a hospital, pharmacies and a ferry within a short drive, on a budget of about $1,700 a month for one person. Many choose to live just outside town and come in for errands. Compare retirement routes across countries in our retirement visas guide, and see the residence options in Moving to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

LGBTQ expats

This is a hard place to live openly. In February 2024, the High Court upheld laws that criminalize gay sex, with penalties of up to 10 years in prison. The laws are rarely enforced, but Human Rights Watch has documented violence and discrimination against LGBT people here. Most LGBTQ Americans will be more comfortable elsewhere in the Caribbean.

Black Americans

Most Vincentians are of African descent, so in Kingstown you'll likely stand out as a foreigner more than for your race. We couldn't find firsthand accounts from Black Americans living here, so talk to people on a scouting trip before you commit.

Limited mobility

Kingstown is tough with a wheelchair or limited mobility. Local advocates in 2025 pointed to buildings without wheelchair ramps, and minibuses are the main way around. Plan on taxis, and ask ahead whether a vehicle can take a folding chair.
