Budget about $2,800 a month for one person in English Harbour, or about $4,000 for a couple, in U.S. dollars. Housing takes the biggest bite: a one-bedroom near the harbor runs about $1,400 a month, and about $1,100 a little farther out.
The village wraps around Nelson's Dockyard, a Georgian naval yard in continuous use since 1725 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2016. It suits people whose days revolve around boats: sailors, charter crews, marine trades, and retirees who want a small community with a strong sense of season. It's a weaker fit if you need a hospital nearby, since the country's main one is across the island in St. John's.

Getting around
Transport in English Harbour
Plan on a car. The village is small enough to cover on foot, but everything beyond it means narrow, hilly roads, and the State Department rates Antigua's major roads average to poor. Traffic drives on the left, and you'll need a temporary local driving license. UK government advice adds that some roads are unlit, so take night drives slowly.
The bus works for daytime errands. Route 17 runs from the West Bus Station in St. John's through All Saints, Liberta and Falmouth to English Harbour, and local guides put the ride at 35 to 60 minutes depending on traffic. There's no strict posted timetable; buses tend to leave when they fill, and service thins out in the evening, so don't count on one after about 7 p.m. Taxis cover the gaps, including the airport run, and it's worth booking ahead.

Community & practical notes
Settling in by the dockyard
Who you'll meet: Charter crews, riggers and yacht captains make up much of the foreign community, and the year runs on the sailing calendar. Antigua Sailing Week, now in its 58th edition, takes over the harbor April 21 to 25, 2027, with racing by day and happy hours and beach events ashore. In the off-season, the village gets quiet.
Healthcare: This is the biggest trade-off. Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre, the country's main referral hospital, is in St. John's on the far side of the island. The State Department says local facilities don't meet U.S. standards and very serious injuries often mean medical evacuation. There's no hyperbaric chamber, which matters if you dive. Carry coverage that includes evacuation; healthcare coach Hunter Schultz, one of our partners, can help you plan your care, and ExpatInsure can quote the coverage.
Internet and storms: Home internet runs about $70 a month in our data. Test the connection at the exact rental before you sign, and keep a mobile hotspot as a backup. Antigua regularly sees hurricanes; August through November are the rainiest months in our climate data.
LGBTQ expats: Antigua's High Court struck down the laws against same-sex relations in July 2022, and current UK government travel advice confirms they're gone. Same-sex marriages from abroad don't carry spousal rights here, so anything tied to spousal status needs separate planning. An Antiguan senator and LGBTQ advocate has said many residents were raised to see same-sex relationships as sinful, so expect more conservative attitudes than in most big U.S. cities.
Black Americans: Antigua is a majority-Black country. The 2011 census found every inhabited parish majority African, and Black Antiguans have made up most of the middle class since independence. For Black Americans, that can mean being part of the majority in daily life for the first time.
Limited mobility: This is a hard place for wheelchairs and walkers. The village sits among steep hills, and the State Department says sidewalks, where they exist, are uneven with few ramps, and buses and taxis have no special accommodations. If mobility matters, walk the route from a rental to the marina in person before committing, and budget for a car.
Retirement: English Harbour fits retirees who sail, or who want a small harbor village with a lively season. The downsides are the hills, the car dependence and the distance to the hospital. Our Antigua and Barbuda moving guide covers how residence works, including permanent residency and the Nomad Digital Residence, and our retirement visa guide compares Antigua with other countries.
