Budget about $2,400 a month in U.S. dollars for one person in Speightstown, with most people landing between $1,800 and $3,000 depending on rent. A couple should plan on roughly $3,500, and a family of four about $5,100. A one-bedroom in the center rents for about $1,200 a month, or around $900 a little outside it (2026 figures).
That's $600 a month less for a single person than Holetown, farther down the same calm Caribbean coast. Speightstown is the old sugar port at the north end of the west coast, in the parish of St. Peter: a small historic center, an esplanade that residents use every evening, and a fish market on the site of an old fort. It suits retirees and remote workers who'd rather know the vendors by name than have a dozen restaurants to choose from.
It's a weaker fit if you want nightlife, big-box shopping or specialist care close by. The island's main hospital and most big errands are south in St. Michael, so plan on regular drives.

Getting around
Transport in Speightstown
Speightstown has its own bus terminal, and buses run down the west coast through Holetown toward Bridgetown. Three kinds share the road: the government Transport Board's big blue buses, privately run yellow minibuses, and white ZR vans with a maroon stripe. A ride costs BBD 3.50 (about $1.75). Carry exact change for the government buses, since their drivers can't make change; conductors on the minibuses and ZRs usually can. Flag the bus down and read the sign on the windshield before you board.
The town center is compact enough to cover on foot. The market, the esplanade boardwalk, the small shopping center and the roadside shops are all a short walk apart. Past that, a car earns its keep quickly: big grocery runs and hospital visits mean heading south, and smaller beaches and inland spots often need a taxi or your own wheels. Barbados drives on the left.

Community & practical notes
Settling into a working town
Day to day
Speightstown is a working town first and a resort second. Vendors at the market sell the day's fish alongside fruit, vegetables and ground provisions, and the Esplanade is where residents go to sit by the water. Arlington House, restored as an interactive museum, tells the story of the town's years as a busy port. Social life is smaller and slower than on the beach strips to the south, which is the point for most people who pick it.
Healthcare
For routine care, the government's Maurice Byer Polyclinic is at Station Hill in St. Peter. For anything serious, Queen Elizabeth Hospital on Martindales Road in St. Michael is the country's main acute-care hospital, so expect a drive south. Medicare doesn't pay for care in Barbados, so set up international health coverage before you move. ExpatInsure sells global health insurance, and healthcare coach Hunter Schultz can help you compare plans.
Working remotely
Home internet runs about $60 a month. The Spaces coworking chain lists locations in Bridgetown, Warrens and Hastings, none of them in Speightstown, so plan on working from home and driving in when you need a desk. If your employer is outside Barbados, start with our Welcome Stamp guide.
Black Americans
Barbados is a majority-Black country, and in a local town like Speightstown your accent will mark you as a newcomer long before anything else does. The adjustments most people mention are the everyday ones: island pace, prices and driving on the left.
LGBTQ expats
In December 2022, Barbados' High Court struck down the Sexual Offences Act provisions that had criminalized consensual same-sex relations. That ruling changed criminal law only, so couples should ask an immigration lawyer how a same-sex partner would be treated on a residence application.
Limited mobility
The old center is low-lying and sits right along the waterfront, so you won't be climbing hills to reach the market. We couldn't confirm wheelchair-accessible bus service on the Speightstown route, though, so plan on taxis or your own car, and check a rental's entrance, bathroom and route to the shops in person before signing.
Retiring here
Barbados has no standalone retirement visa. Retirees who want to stay long term generally apply for the Special Entry and Reside Permit, which has a fee category for retired people but qualifies applicants through substantial assets or an unmortgaged property or investment funded from abroad. Our SERP guide covers what it takes. If you qualify, a couple's budget of about $3,500 a month here compares with about $4,300 in Holetown. Our retirement visa guide compares countries with dedicated retiree programs, and our Barbados moving guide covers the whole island.
