St. John's: where Antigua's errands get done, a drive from the beaches

What it costs to live in Antigua's capital, how safe it is, how you'll get around, and whether it works for retirees.

Budget about $2,400 a month for one person in St. John's, with most people landing between $2,000 and $2,800. A couple should plan on about $3,400, and a family of four about $5,000. A one-bedroom near the center rents for around $950, or closer to $700 farther out. These are 2026 estimates in U.S. dollars, and rent moves the total more than anything else.

St. John's is Antigua's capital and commercial center, home to about 21,000 people. The main hospital, the banks, the government offices, the Saturday market and the cruise dock are all here. It's a working town, not a postcard, and the beaches you came for are a drive away.

It suits people who want a doctor, the shops and the airport within easy reach, and who'd rather pay town rents than resort rents. If you picture sand outside your door, live on the coast and come into town for chores.

Getting around

Transport in St. John's

Most residents drive, and you'll probably want a car too, mainly for the beaches and the south coast. Traffic keeps to the left. Visitors need a temporary local permit, which the U.S. State Department puts at about $20 for three months. The State Department calls the major roads average to poor, and the UK government warns of potholes, unmarked speed bumps and unlit stretches at night.

The buses are privately run minivans with yellow plates marked BUS. They leave from two stations in town: the West Bus Station for the west and south, including Jolly Harbour and English Harbour, and the East Bus Station for the northeast and the airport. There's no timetable, and a van goes when it's full. On busy routes that means one every 5 to 15 minutes from about 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., then one or two an hour in the evening. Fares are cash only, in Eastern Caribbean dollars: St. John's to English Harbour was EC$3.75 (about $1.40) in late 2024.

Taxis carry yellow TX plates and have no meters. Fares are government set by route and paid in cash, about $13 to Dickenson Bay or $20 to Jolly Harbour as of 2024. For Barbuda, ferries leave from the harbor in town and take about 90 minutes.

Community and practical notes

Settling in: health, people and practicalities

Community

St. John's is where Antiguans live and work. Foreign residents tend to gather around Jolly Harbour, English Harbour and Dickenson Bay and come into town for the market, the bank and the hospital. Living in town puts you among locals from day one. Since English is the national language, nothing gets lost at the bank counter or the doctor's office.

Healthcare

Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre in St. John's is the country's main referral hospital, with emergency care, diagnostic imaging and specialists in areas such as cardiology, urology and ophthalmology. It opened in 2009 as Mount St. John's Medical Centre, and you'll still hear the old name. Here's the catch: the U.S. State Department says medical facilities don't meet U.S. standards and that hospitals and doctors often want payment upfront. The UK government notes that serious cases may need evacuation, and the State Department strongly recommends evacuation coverage. Hunter Schultz, a healthcare coach, and ExpatInsure, which offers global health insurance, can help you choose a plan before you arrive.

Internet and remote work

Home internet runs about $70 a month. APUA, the state utility, started offering fiber to homes in 2021, with St. John's among the first areas. Service still varies by street, so test the connection at the exact address before you sign a lease.

Retiring in St. John's

Town makes sense for retirees who want the hospital and the market close by and rents below the resort coasts. Build insurance with evacuation coverage into that $2,400 monthly budget. Compare countries on our retirement visas guide, and see Antigua's residence routes in Moving to Antigua and Barbuda.

LGBTQ expats

Antigua's High Court struck down the laws against same-sex relations in July 2022 and read the constitution's ban on sex discrimination to cover sexual orientation and gender identity. Same-sex couples married abroad don't get spousal rights here, though. The UK government says Caribbean attitudes are mostly conservative and that public affection can draw negative attention.

Black Americans

Most Antiguans are of African descent, about 87% at the 2011 census. We couldn't find firsthand accounts from Black Americans living in St. John's, so a scouting trip and conversations with residents are the best way to judge daily life before you commit.

Limited mobility

St. John's is hard going with a wheelchair or limited mobility. The law bans discrimination against people with physical disabilities, but the State Department describes access to buildings, sidewalks and transport as extremely difficult. Plan on a car or taxis rather than the minivan buses.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Can you live in St. John's without a car?

Yes, if you mostly stay in town. Minivan buses run from two stations in St. John's with no timetable, leaving when full, and service thins out after about 7 p.m. Taxis have no meters but charge government-set fares in cash. Most residents still drive to reach the beaches and the south coast.

How much does it cost to live in St. John's, Antigua?

Plan on about $2,400 a month for one person, with a realistic range of $2,000 to $2,800. A couple spends about $3,400 and a family of four about $5,000. These 2026 estimates are in U.S. dollars, and rent is the biggest swing: around $950 for a one-bedroom in the center and $700 farther out.

Is St. John's a good place to retire?

It can be, for retirees who want Antigua's main hospital and market nearby and rents below the resort coasts. One person should budget about $2,400 a month. Medical care doesn't meet U.S. standards and serious cases may need evacuation, so international health insurance with evacuation coverage belongs in the plan.

Is St. John's, Antigua safe?

Yes, with ordinary care. As of May 2026 the U.S. State Department rates Antigua and Barbuda Level 1, its lowest advisory, meaning exercise normal precautions. Violent crime does happen, including armed robbery, so the UK government advises avoiding isolated areas and beaches after dark and using only licensed taxis.

Is the internet good enough for remote work in St. John's?

Usually, but check the address. Home internet costs about $70 a month, and the state utility APUA has offered fiber to homes since 2021, with St. John's among the first areas covered. Service varies by street, so test the connection at any place before you sign.

What is the weather like in St. John's?

Warm all year, averaging about 80F. Average highs run from about 79F in January to about 84F in August. About 33 inches of rain falls in a typical year, more than half of it from August through November. Hurricane season runs June through November, with the highest risk in August, September and October.

Is St. John's, Antigua LGBTQ friendly?

It's legal but socially conservative. A July 2022 High Court ruling struck down the laws against same-sex relations and read constitutional protection against sex discrimination to include sexual orientation and gender identity. Same-sex marriages from abroad don't carry spousal rights, and public affection may draw negative attention.
