Ras Al Khaimah: the UAE between a beach and its highest mountain

What it costs to live in RAK, how safe it is, how retirees qualify, and what daily life looks like an hour's drive from Dubai.

Budget about $2,200 a month in U.S. dollars for one person in Ras Al Khaimah, with a realistic range of $1,800 to $2,600 (2026 figures). A couple spends about $3,100 and a family of four about $4,500. A one-bedroom in the center rents for about $1,100 a month, or about $650 farther out.

RAK, for short, puts beach resorts on Al Marjan Island in front of you and Jebel Jais, the UAE's highest peak, behind. It fits remote workers and retirees who want UAE residence at a slower pace, with Dubai about an hour's drive away.

It's a weaker fit if you need a local job, since there aren't many, or if you don't want to drive. And plan your summers: average highs sit between about 98F and 103F from May through September.

Getting around

Transport in Ras Al Khaimah

RAKTA, the emirate's transport authority, runs five city bus lines at AED 8 a ride (about $2), plus intercity buses from the Al Dhait station. The bus to Dubai costs AED 27 (about $7). Direct departures leave at 5:30, 6:15 and 7:00 a.m., then buses run hourly via Sharjah until 7 p.m. You pay with a stored-value card, and RAKTA's Sayr app plans trips, tracks buses live and books intercity seats. Riders 60 and over get half off with the Silver card. Fares are as of March 2026.

Taxis are metered and regulated by RAKTA. Hail one, or book through Careem or the Sayr app. A taxi to Dubai typically runs AED 200 to 500 (about $55 to $135), depending on where in Dubai you're headed.

Five bus lines can't cover the whole emirate, though. If you're living in Al Hamra Village, Mina Al Arab or out on Al Marjan Island, plan on owning a car. If you'll drive to Dubai for work, try the trip at rush hour before you sign a lease.

Living here

Community and practical notes

Where people settle

Foreigners can buy in RAK's freehold areas, including Al Hamra Village, Al Marjan Island and Dafan Al Nakheel. Al Hamra Village is built around an 18-hole golf course near the E11 highway, which makes trips to the other emirates easier. Mina Al Arab draws families with parks and schools close by. Al Marjan Island is a man-made island in four clusters, lined with beach resorts.

Healthcare

Since January 2025, private-sector employers in RAK and the other northern emirates must give workers health insurance. The basic plan starts at AED 320 a year (about $86), with no waiting period for pre-existing conditions. If you're retired or self-employed, budget for a policy of your own. Sheikh Khalifa Specialty Hospital has 264 beds and focuses on cancer, neurology and heart care. RAK Hospital is a 65-bed private hospital that works with insurers across the UAE.

One rule to know before any visa paperwork: the UAE doesn't grant residence or work visas to people with HIV.

Working remotely

Home internet runs about $90 a month. The UAE is eight to nine hours ahead of Eastern, by season, so a 9 a.m. call in New York lands at 5 or 6 p.m. for you.

Schools

Ras Al Khaimah American Academy and The WellSpring School both teach an American curriculum from kindergarten through Grade 12. RAK Academy offers IB and British programs over the same grades. Tuition changes often, so get current fees from each school.

LGBTQ expats

Consensual same-sex relations between adults are illegal in the UAE, plus the law doesn't protect against discrimination based on sexual orientation. The State Department's 2023 human rights report found no known arrests or prosecutions for consensual same-sex conduct that year, but the law is still on the books. Talk with LGBTQ people living in the UAE now before you commit.

Black Americans

Racial discrimination is illegal in the UAE, but the State Department reports the protections aren't effectively enforced and that discrimination is common in employment. Some job postings list ethnic preferences, and some employers pay differently by nationality. That matters most if you plan to job hunt locally. Ask Black expats already in the UAE how hiring and daily life have gone for them.

Limited mobility

Every RAK public bus is equipped for wheelchair users, and People of Determination, the UAE's term for residents with disabilities, ride city buses free with the Saqr Gold Card. Four taxis with wheelchair lifts serve riders with disabilities and seniors; book one on the toll-free line, 8001700, and book early since there are only four. Check step-free entrances and elevators before you sign a lease, and remember the summer heat makes even short outdoor stretches hard.

Retiring here

A couple spends about $3,100 a month here, which makes RAK worth a look for retirees. The UAE's five-year retirement residence is for people over 55 and renews while you still qualify. Outside Dubai, you'll need about $5,400 a month in income (the UAE sets it at AED 20,000), or about $270,000 (AED 1 million) in property or savings. How much does it cost to live in Ras Al Khaimah?

Plan on about $2,200 a month for one person in Ras Al Khaimah, with a realistic range of $1,800 to $2,600 as of 2026. A couple spends about $3,100 a month and a family of four about $4,500. Rent is the biggest line: a one-bedroom apartment in the center costs about $1,100 a month.

How far is Ras Al Khaimah from Dubai?

About an hour's drive. RAKTA intercity buses to Dubai cost AED 27 (about $7), with direct departures early in the morning and hourly buses via Sharjah until 7 p.m. A taxi typically runs AED 200 to 500 (about $55 to $135).

Is Ras Al Khaimah safe?

Yes, by the numbers. Ras Al Khaimah scores 74 out of 100 on our safety index, with a crime index of 26. The bigger adjustment for Americans is legal rather than criminal: UAE law criminalizes same-sex relations, and the UAE doesn't grant residence visas to people with HIV.

Do you need a car in Ras Al Khaimah?

In most cases, yes. RAKTA runs five city bus lines at AED 8 (about $2) a ride, plus metered taxis you can book through Careem or the Sayr app. But the bus network can't reach every community, so residents of places like Al Hamra Village or Al Marjan Island usually drive.

Can Americans retire in Ras Al Khaimah?

Yes. The UAE offers a five-year retirement residence, renewable, for people over 55. Outside Dubai you qualify with about $5,400 a month in income (AED 20,000), or about $270,000 (AED 1 million) in property or savings. Plan on buying your own health insurance.

Are there American schools in Ras Al Khaimah?

Yes. Ras Al Khaimah American Academy and The WellSpring School both teach an American curriculum from kindergarten through Grade 12, and RAK Academy offers IB and British programs. Ask each school for current tuition, since fees change.

Is Ras Al Khaimah a good place to move for work?

Only if you already have a job lined up. Ras Al Khaimah has few local jobs, so it suits remote workers and retirees better than job seekers. Many people who want UAE careers look to Dubai, about an hour's drive away.
