The Barbados SERP: residence for Americans bringing capital
Two tiers with very different rights. What each one costs, who's allowed to work, and why a Barbados lawyer isn't optional.
Updated September 2026 for U.S. passport holders. The SERP runs on immigration policy rather than a written law, so the fees below come from Barbados lawyers and advisers, not a government fee schedule.

Which category fits
Two tiers, and the real gap is work
Category 1: the high-net-worth route
You certify a net worth above $5 million and invest at least $2 million from money held outside Barbados. You're entitled to a work permit, at extra cost. At 60 or older, residence is indefinite; under 60, advisers describe five-year renewals.
Category 2: the homeowner route
Buy a Barbados home worth at least $300,000. You get renewable five-year terms, or an indefinite permit at 60 or older. You can't work in Barbados.
Categories 3 and 4
Advisers also list a special-skills category and one for parents or grandparents of Barbadian citizens, with no published thresholds.
Special Entry and Reside Permit (SERP) – Investor
For investors making qualifying investments in real estate, business, or financial contributions. Categories include high-net-worth individuals and property investors. Permanent residency possible for significant investments.

- $5,000

About that data card
Our database lists "Proof of investment (minimum $150,000–$2,000,000 depending on category)." We found no source for a $150,000 floor. Advisers cite $300,000 in property, or $2 million invested plus a $5 million net worth. It also says "Permanent (renewable)"; indefinite residence is described for Category 1 and for applicants 60 or older, while younger property owners renew every five years. Plan on a police certificate and health insurance, not a medical certificate.
What else it costs
Work permit (Category 1)
US$15,000 at 60 or older, US$20,000 under 60, on top of the residence fee.
Spouse and kids
Spouses and children under 18, or university students you support, can join. Each dependent's application is US$150.
Health insurance
Advisers say the policy needs at least US$500,000 in annual coverage.
Stamp duty
1% of the price when you buy property.
Property transfer tax
2.5% of the price above BDS$50,000 (about $25,000), paid by the seller.
Money from abroad
The Central Bank must approve a non-resident purchase, and the full price has to arrive from outside Barbados.
Before you commit
Taxes, healthcare and getting money back out
Taxes
Invest Barbados says holders are taxed on Barbados income, and on foreign income only if they bring it in. There's no capital gains tax. The U.S. still taxes you on worldwide income, and Barbados accounts above the threshold go on your FBAR.
Healthcare
The Queen Elizabeth Hospital treats citizens and permanent residents free. SERP holders pay their own way and must carry insurance, and the State Department encourages medical evacuation coverage.
Selling later
A purchase takes about two to three months. When you sell, the Central Bank lets you take out the purchase price plus a 4% to 8% markup, with anything more leaving in US$100,000 yearly installments.
Citizenship
Barbados recognizes dual nationality, so you keep your U.S. passport. Current law asks for five years of residence, including the last 12 months without a break. No source confirms whether SERP years count, so ask your lawyer.
Two bills could reshape this route
An Immigration Bill and a Citizenship Bill, both dated April 21, 2026, were still at the House of Assembly stage as of late September. They'd add points-based permanent residence (10 points needed; property worth $500,000 to $5 million earns 3, and the bill doesn't say which dollars) and a citizenship rule of 270 days on the island within 1,095 days. The draft keeps existing special entry permits valid. Neither is law yet. Earning $50,000 a year remotely instead? The Welcome Stamp is the simpler route.

Barbados SERP: common questions
Does buying property in Barbados give you residency?
Not automatically. Buying a home is separate from immigration status. A home worth at least $300,000 can support an application for a Category 2 Special Entry and Reside Permit, but you still have to apply and be approved.
Can my spouse and children get a SERP with me?
Yes. Spouses and children under 18, or university students you support, can be included. Advisers put each dependent's application fee at US$150, and university students have to show proof of study every three years.
How long does a SERP application take?
Barbados doesn't publish processing times for the Special Entry and Reside Permit. Estimates range from a few weeks to about three months, so leave room before any move date.
Can you work in Barbados on a Special Entry and Reside Permit?
It depends on the category. Category 1 holders, who qualify through a $2 million investment, are entitled to a work permit that advisers say costs US$15,000 at 60 or older and US$20,000 under 60. Category 2 holders, who qualify through property, can't work in Barbados.
Can a Barbados SERP lead to citizenship?
Possibly, but not automatically. Current law asks for five years of residence, including the 12 months right before you apply, and no source confirms whether SERP time counts. Barbados recognizes dual nationality, so Americans don't have to give up U.S. citizenship.
How are SERP holders taxed?
Invest Barbados says holders pay Barbados tax on Barbados-source income, and on foreign income only if they bring it into Barbados. Americans still file U.S. returns on worldwide income and must report foreign accounts above the threshold to the U.S. Treasury.
How much do you need to invest for Barbados residency?
Advisers cite two main routes as of September 2026: buy a Barbados home worth at least $300,000, or invest at least $2 million from money held outside Barbados while certifying a net worth above $5 million. Barbados doesn't publish official thresholds, so confirm the current figures with a Barbados immigration lawyer.
Do you have to live in Barbados to keep a SERP?
No. Invest Barbados says there's no obligation to live on the island and holders can come and go as they please. Spending more than 182 days there in a calendar year makes you a Barbados tax resident, though.
