One person can live in Poprad on about $1,400 a month, going by our 2026 cost data, while a couple needs about $2,300 and a family of four about $3,300. A one-bedroom near the center averages about $600 a month, or about $500 farther out. That single budget is about $600 a month below Bratislava's and about $200 below Košice's. Our Poprad figures are rough estimates with a wide range ($1,100 to $1,800 for one person), so use them to plan, not to sign a lease.
Poprad suits people whose idea of a good weekend is a trail, a ski run or a mountain hut. The train to the High Tatras resorts leaves from the main station, the safety index is 78, and the town itself is practical rather than pretty.
It's a harder fit if you want a big city, mild winters or an easy English-speaking social life. Most of daily life here runs in Slovak.

Transport in Poprad
Poprad is a town of about 48,000, so most errands are a walk or a short bus ride. SAD Poprad runs the city buses, and the carrier sells a contactless chip card for regular riders.
The Tatra Electric Railway is the reason many people pick Poprad. Its narrow-gauge trains start at Poprad-Tatry, the same station as the mainline trains, and climb to Starý Smokovec and Štrbské Pleso, with a branch from Starý Smokovec to Tatranská Lomnica. ZSSK, the national rail company, operates it.
For longer trips, Poprad-Tatry sits on the main line across Slovakia, with InterCity trains toward Bratislava and Košice and an overnight EuroNight train toward Prague. The small Poprad-Tatry Airport has no domestic flights; Wizz Air flies to London Luton and adds Prague from late October 2026.
You can manage in town without a car. One makes sense if you live in a village outside Poprad or want trailheads the railway doesn't reach.

What settling in Poprad looks like
Who you'll meet: Poprad's foreign crowd is small and seasonal, made up mostly of visitors heading for the mountains rather than residents. Expect to build a social life through hiking, skiing and climbing clubs, and learn some Slovak early; it makes everything from the landlord to the doctor easier.
Healthcare: The town's hospital, Nemocnica Poprad, belongs to a state-owned hospital company and performed more than 19,000 operations in 2023. It has pediatric, internal medicine, maternity, eye, orthopedic and ear, nose and throat departments. For more specialized care, plan on trips to larger cities. Ask ahead whether a doctor speaks English. Our Slovakia moving guide explains when you're in the public system and when you need private coverage.
Remote work: Home internet runs about $20 a month in our data. Coworking Poprad opened in the town center in 2017 to give IT workers a base under the Tatras; confirm it's still open before you count on a desk.
LGBTQ expats: Look closely at national law before you move. In September 2025, Slovakia's parliament amended the constitution to recognize only two sexes and to restrict adoption to married couples, and the constitution already defines marriage as a man and a woman. Couples planning a family here should get legal advice first.
Black Americans: We haven't yet gathered first-hand accounts from Black residents of Poprad. In a small town you'll likely stand out. Spend a few weeks here before committing, and ask in Slovakia expat groups online how everyday life goes.
Limited mobility: The town sits on mostly level ground in the valley below the mountains, which helps. Older apartment blocks often lack elevators, so check before signing. If you want the mountains, ask ZSSK about step-free boarding on the Tatra trains.
Retirement: Poprad's prices and mountain air appeal to retirees, but Slovakia has no retirement visa. Temporary residence is granted for set purposes like a job, a business, study or family, and living on a pension isn't one of them. Americans who settle here usually have a Slovak spouse, Slovak roots or a business residence permit. Our retirement visa guide compares countries that do have a route for retirees.

Frequently asked questions
What is the cost of living in Poprad, Slovakia?
Our 2026 data puts a single person's budget in Poprad at about $1,400 a month, a couple at about $2,300 and a family of four at about $3,300. A one-bedroom apartment near the center rents for about $600 a month. These are estimates with a wide range, about $1,100 to $1,800 for one person, so check current listings before you budget.
Is Poprad safe for Americans?
Poprad scores 78 on our safety index, where higher means safer. That's above Bratislava at 72 and Košice at 74 in the same data. As anywhere, use normal city sense at night and around the train station.
How do you get to Poprad from the United States?
There's no nonstop flight. Poprad-Tatry Airport has Wizz Air service to London Luton, with Prague added from late October 2026, so you can connect through either. You can also fly into a larger airport and take the train, since Poprad sits on Slovakia's main rail line with InterCity trains toward Bratislava and Košice.
Is Poprad a good base for remote workers?
It can be, if you value mountain access over nightlife. Home internet runs about $20 a month in our data. Coworking Poprad has offered desks in the town center since 2017, but confirm it's open before you rely on it.
Do you need a car to live in Poprad?
Not in town. City buses and walking cover daily errands, and the Tatra Electric Railway runs from Poprad's main station to the mountain resorts of Starý Smokovec, Štrbské Pleso and Tatranská Lomnica. A car helps if you live in a nearby village or want trailheads beyond the rail line.
Is Slovakia LGBTQ-friendly for people moving there?
Legally, it has grown more restrictive. In September 2025, parliament amended the constitution to recognize only two sexes and to restrict adoption to married couples, and marriage is defined as a union of a man and a woman. Same-sex couples, and especially those planning a family, should get legal advice before moving.

Americans who retire in Slovakia usually qualify through a Slovak spouse, Slovak ancestry or a business residence permit.
