Klaipėda: a Baltic port city with the dunes a ferry ride away
What a seaside life in Lithuania's port city costs, how the buses and ferries work, and who the long gray winter rules out.

Budget about $1,400 a month for one person in Klaipėda, in U.S. dollars, with most people landing somewhere between $1,200 and $1,700. A couple runs about $2,400 and a family of four about $3,400. A one-bedroom in the center rents for around $600, closer to $450 farther out, and home internet is about $15 a month.
It suits people who want the sea built into ordinary weeks: remote workers paid in dollars, couples who'd rather live in a city of about 158,000 than in a capital, and anyone who'll treat the Curonian Spit's dunes and pine forest as a weekend backyard. The old town, the Danė riverfront and the ferry landing sit close together, so the center works on foot.
Here's the catch: winter. January highs average about 34F, nights dip toward 26F, and the gray stretch from November to February is long. Lithuania also has no retirement or digital nomad visa, so most Americans need a job, a business, study plans or Lithuanian roots to stay past 90 days.

Getting around
Transport in Klaipėda
Central Klaipėda is easy on foot. The old town, the riverfront and the Old Ferry landing are a short walk apart, and plenty of daily errands never need a bus. For the rest of the city, buses and minibuses fill in. You can buy single and period tickets in the e.Ticket Klaipėda app or load a travel card, and our data puts a monthly pass at about $30.
The ferry is part of daily life here. The crossing to Smiltynė, at the northern tip of the Curonian Spit, takes about four minutes. The Old Ferry carries only pedestrians and cyclists; the New Ferry, from a separate terminal, takes cars too.
For flights, bus route 31 runs from Klaipėda through Palanga to Palanga Airport, and you can pay with the app, a bank card or cash. Vilnius is a longer trip: the LTG Link train takes about four and a half hours. Bolt and eTAKSI work for short hops around town.
You don't need a car for city life. You'll want one, or a good bike, for exploring the spit and the coast north toward Palanga.

Community & practical notes
Living in Klaipėda day to day
The expat scene: Small, and you should plan for that. We couldn't find an organized American community in Klaipėda, so don't count on an English-speaking social circle forming around you. Lithuanian is the language of paperwork and of the permanent residence exam, so lessons pay off quickly in daily life, too.
Healthcare: The city lists three public hospitals for adults: Klaipėda University Hospital and Klaipėda Seamen's Hospital, both on Liepojos Street, and the Republican Hospital in Klaipėda. Children go to Klaipėda Children's Hospital. The U.S. State Department notes that facilities don't always meet Western standards, that private hospitals expect payment on admission, and that most won't take U.S. insurance, so arrive with international coverage. The emergency number is 112, with English-speaking operators.
Remote work: Home internet runs about $15 a month. Lighthouse Hub on Liepų Street is the best-known coworking space, with meeting rooms, event space and quiet corners, and Spaces also has a Klaipėda location. Local salaries are low, so this works best when your income comes from outside Lithuania.
International schools: Klaipėda Lyceum, a private school, is an authorized IB World School teaching in English and Lithuanian. It added the IB Diploma in 2019, the Middle Years Programme in 2023 and the Primary Years Programme in 2024. For an English-only curriculum, the bigger choice is in Vilnius.
LGBTQ expats: The legal picture is moving, albeit slowly. In April 2025, Lithuania's Constitutional Court ruled that limiting partnerships to a man and a woman is unconstitutional, but there's still no registration procedure in law, so couples go to court one by one. In September 2026, the Klaipėda Regional Court upheld an order to register two women's partnership, while the Justice Ministry has appealed about 20 such decisions. Same-sex marriage isn't available as of 2026. The State Department says LGBTQ people have faced verbal harassment and some assaults.
Black Americans: We couldn't find a documented Black American community in Klaipėda, and you'll likely be very visible. The State Department reports that foreigners and ethnic minorities have faced harassment and assaults, mostly late at night near bars and nightclubs. Spend a few weeks here, in both summer and winter, before signing a lease.
Limited mobility: Harder than the compact center suggests. The Lithuanian Association of People with Disabilities has described Klaipėda's old town as hardly suitable for people with access needs, and a 2020 Klaipėda University study backed that up. Lithuanian cities run low-floor buses marked with special signs, with reserved seats inside, which helps for getting around the newer parts of town. Check each apartment's elevator, entrance steps and the walk to your bus stop in person.
Retirement: The money works: a couple lives here on about $2,400 a month, and summer highs near 72F in July and August make for a mild season by the sea. The visa doesn't. Lithuania has no retirement visa, so Social Security or a pension alone won't get you a residence permit; Lithuanian ancestry or a resident spouse are the realistic routes. Our retirement visa guide covers countries that do take retirees, and our Lithuania moving guide lays out every route there.
