Kaunas: Lithuania's university city, calmer and less expensive than Vilnius

Interwar modernist streets, a long pedestrian main drag and a student crowd, with real winters and narrow residency routes for Americans.

Kaunas runs about $1,500 a month for one person in U.S. dollars, and our 2026 range for a single budget is $1,200 to $1,800. Couples should budget around $2,400 and a family of four about $3,600. Rent is the biggest line: roughly $650 for a one-bedroom near the center, or $500 farther out. One person in Vilnius spends about $1,900 by the same measure.

This is Lithuania's second-largest city, home to about 305,000 people in 2023 and several universities, so the center stays young. Life runs along Laisvės alėja, a long pedestrian street, and through interwar modernist neighborhoods that UNESCO added to its World Heritage List in 2023. It suits people who want a calm, walkable base inside the EU and the euro, and who'd rather spend less than they would in the capital.

Here's the catch: wanting to live here isn't enough. Lithuania has no residence permit for retirees or remote workers, so most Americans who make it work have a job offer, a business, a Lithuanian spouse or Lithuanian roots. Winters are long, too, with January highs averaging near 31°F, and the job market and English-language services are thinner than in Vilnius.

Getting around

Transport in Kaunas

Buses and trolleybuses carry the city, running from about 4:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. You can tap a contactless bank card or your phone when you board, and the Žiogas app sells tickets for less. Trafi shows live arrivals. A monthly pass runs about $30 in our data, which makes transit the easy default for commuting.

The center is the walkable part. Laisvės alėja is closed to cars, and bikes ride free on any bus with a "Like Bike" sticker on the door. For a taxi, the eTaksi app reaches most of the city's traditional taxi companies, and Bolt works here too.

Kaunas International Airport (KUN) sits about 9 miles (15 km) northeast of the city, with direct flights from more than 20 European airports. The 29G city bus runs there regularly, and the airport bus waits for the last plane of the night to land before it leaves. Trains and intercity buses link Kaunas with Vilnius, and the Rail Baltica line, now under construction, should improve those connections.

You don't need a car for daily life. If you bring one, expect to pay for street parking in most zones from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day, usually through the Unipark app.

Community & practical notes

Who you'll meet: Kaunas is a university city first. Kaunas University of Technology and the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences both draw international students, and the city's newcomer and investment agency, Kaunas IN, publishes practical guides for people arriving from abroad. We couldn't find a count of Americans living here, so plan on building a social life through work, classes and Lithuanian lessons rather than an established expat scene.

Healthcare: Kaunas Clinics, the hospital of the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, is the city's anchor. The tourism board calls it the largest and most advanced medical institution in Lithuania and the Baltics. Whether you're in the public system depends on your permit, so arrange private coverage before you land. Private hospitals expect payment when you're admitted, and Medicare doesn't apply abroad.

LGBTQ expats: Same-sex relationships and Pride events face no legal restrictions, and Baltic Pride 2025 drew about 20,000 people. Legal recognition is still unsettled. The Constitutional Court ruled that keeping partnerships opposite-sex only is unconstitutional. As of September 2026, the Seimas hadn't passed a law to register them. Couples have been winning registration case by case in court while the Justice Ministry appeals, and marriage remains limited to a man and a woman. The State Department notes that LGBTQ people have faced verbal harassment and assaults.

Black Americans: We couldn't find reliable published accounts of daily life for Black residents in Kaunas, and the State Department's Lithuania page doesn't address it. Before committing, spend a few weeks here and talk with Black residents or students in the city about what everyday life is like.

Limited mobility: Lithuania's Law on Equal Treatment bans disability discrimination, and city buses generally hold reserved seats. The flat, car-free stretch of Laisvės alėja is the easiest part of town to get around. Away from it, check curbs, entrances and elevators in person before you sign a lease.

Working online: Home internet runs about $15 a month in our data. Lithuania doesn't offer a digital nomad visa as of 2026, so a U.S. paycheck alone won't get you residency.

Retiring here: Kaunas has the hospital and the quiet pace many retirees want, but Lithuania doesn't issue residence permits for pension or passive income. Retiring here works for people with Lithuanian roots or a family tie. Our Lithuania guide covers each route, or compare countries with retirement visas.
