A single person in Lahore can expect to spend about $900 a month in U.S. dollars, with a realistic range of $700 to $1,100. A couple should plan on about $1,400 and a family of four about $2,300. A central one-bedroom averages $400 a month, or about $200 in outer areas. Those figures come from our 2026 cost data.

Lahore is the capital of Punjab and Pakistan's cultural center, with the walled city, the Badshahi Mosque, Food Street and a deep love of eating well. Most foreigners rent in tree-lined Gulberg or DHA, where a well-kept, guarded apartment can cost more than the averages above.

This city fits a specific group: Americans with Pakistani family or a Pakistani spouse, people sent here by an employer, and those who already know the country well. Lahore scores 40 out of 100 on our safety index, so let security guide where you live.

Getting around

Transport in Lahore

Most foreigners get around by car, either with a hired driver or through ride-hailing apps. Careem ended ride-hailing in Pakistan in July 2025, and inDrive and Yango were the main apps left at that point, so check what's running when you land. Auto rickshaws are everywhere and run on compressed natural gas. Settle the fare before you get in.

Lahore also has two long transit corridors. The Metro Bus has run since February 2013 on a 27-kilometer (17-mile) route between Gajju Mata and Shahdara. The Orange Line, Pakistan's first driverless metro, covers 27.1 kilometers (16.8 miles) from Ali Town on Raiwind Road to Dera Gujran. Neither reaches every neighborhood, so a car still handles most errands.

Walking is pleasant in winter, when January highs average near 65F. From April through September, average highs run from 94F to 102F, which turns most walking into an early-morning plan.

Community, health and practical notes

Finding your people

Expect to build your circle through family, work or your kids' school rather than an organized expat scene. For families, Lahore American School has offered an American college-prep program since 1956, from preschool through grade 12, and it has held Middle States accreditation since 1985.

Healthcare

Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital holds Joint Commission International accreditation, and it also runs walk-in clinics and diagnostic services. The State Department notes that care in Pakistan's big cities varies in quality and range. Arrive with international health coverage, and ask other foreigners which private hospitals they trust for everyday care.

Air quality and safety

Smog is the problem that catches newcomers off guard. In November 2024, Lahore's air quality index topped 600, and Punjab closed schools and parks. If you have asthma or a heart condition, plan to travel during late fall and winter or budget for good air purifiers.

The State Department rates Pakistan Level 3, Reconsider Travel, citing armed conflict, terrorism, crime and kidnapping. In March 2026, it ordered non-emergency staff at the Lahore and Karachi consulates to leave Pakistan during the conflict with Iran. Check the consulate's current status before you go.

Remote work

Home internet runs about $10 a month. Keep a mobile hotspot as a backup, since the government has shut down cell and internet service before. Pakistan doesn't use daylight saving time, so it's nine to ten hours ahead of Eastern, by season.

LGBTQ expats

Pakistan's Penal Code criminalizes same-sex sexual activity, with a maximum sentence of life in prison, and arrests still happen from time to time. We didn't find an LGBTQ expat community in Lahore. Most LGBTQ Americans will be better served by another country.

Black Americans

We didn't find a Black American expat group in Lahore, or reporting focused on Black Americans living here. If you're weighing the move, ask Americans you know through work or family how daily life has gone for them.

Limited mobility

Lahore is hard going with limited mobility. Our data shows very few places tagged as wheelchair accessible, and summer heat makes time outdoors tough. A car with a driver is the practical answer, and you'll want to confirm step-free access at each building and apartment.

Retirement

Lahore isn't a natural retirement base for most Americans. Pakistan has no retirement visa among the routes we track, so long stays usually run through work, investment, study or Pakistani family ties. Our guide to moving to Pakistan walks through each route, and our retirement visa hub compares countries that do offer a retirement visa.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Can Americans retire in Lahore?

Not easily. Pakistan has no retirement visa among the routes we track, so long-term stays depend on work, investment, study or Pakistani family ties. If retirement is your main goal, compare countries that offer a dedicated retirement visa.

What is the weather like in Lahore?

Hot for much of the year. Average highs reach about 102F in May and June, and July and August bring the heaviest rain. Winters are mild, with January averaging highs near 65F and lows near 46F.

Do you need a car in Lahore?

Most foreigners rely on a car, a hired driver or ride-hailing apps such as inDrive and Yango. The Metro Bus and the driverless Orange Line each cover a long corridor across the city, and auto rickshaws handle short trips.

Is there an American school in Lahore?

Yes. Lahore American School was founded in 1956, teaches an American college-prep program from preschool through grade 12 in English, and has been accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools since 1985. Admission is selective.

Is Lahore safe for Americans?

Pakistan carries a Level 3, Reconsider Travel advisory from the State Department, citing armed conflict, terrorism, crime and kidnapping. The U.S. says its ability to help citizens is more limited in most areas outside Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi. Lahore scores 40 out of 100 on our safety index, so choose housing with good security and talk to people who live there before signing a lease.

How much does it cost to live in Lahore?

Our 2026 cost data puts a single person at about $900 a month in U.S. dollars, with most budgets falling between $700 and $1,100. Rent is the biggest variable: a central one-bedroom averages about $400 a month, and a guarded apartment in Gulberg or DHA can run higher.

Can you work remotely from Lahore?

Yes, with backups. Home internet costs about $10 a month, but Pakistan's government has shut down cell and internet service in the past, so keep a mobile hotspot ready. Lahore is nine to ten hours ahead of U.S. Eastern time, by season.

When is smog season in Lahore?

Smog builds in late fall and winter. In November 2024, Lahore's air quality index topped 600, well past the 300 mark considered hazardous, and Punjab closed schools and parks. People with asthma or heart conditions should plan around those months.
