Flic en Flac is a seaside village on the west coast of Mauritius, built around one of the island's longest public beaches and a lagoon sheltered by coral reef. It suits people who want the water at the center of the day: a swim before breakfast, a walk at sunset, slow afternoons. Retirees and remote workers who like a quiet routine are the natural fit.
It's a poor match if you want nightlife, a busy social calendar or a city on your doorstep. The town is geared to tourism and goes quiet in the evenings. For a hospital, a big shopping run or government paperwork, you'll head inland to Quatre Bornes or up the coast to Port Louis.

Getting around
Transport in Flic en Flac
Flic en Flac is a small village strung along its beach, so day-to-day errands in town are a short walk or bike ride. Getting anywhere else takes planning.
The main bus link is route 57. It starts in Wolmar at the south end of town, runs through Flic en Flac and heads inland through Bambous to the Quatre Bornes traffic center. The published timetable shows a bus about every 20 minutes during the day and a ride of about 50 minutes. Here's the catch: the last departure from Wolmar is listed at 6:30 p.m. on weekdays and Saturdays, and 6:20 p.m. on Sundays and public holidays. Check times locally before you count on them.
In Quatre Bornes you can switch to the Metro Express light rail, which runs between Port Louis and Curepipe through the inland towns, with a branch toward Réduit. It doesn't reach the west coast.
If you live here year-round, plan on a car. Mauritius drives on the left, and local driving can be careless, so give yourself time to adjust. Taxis cover the airport run and the odd night out; agree on the fare before you get in or make sure the meter is running.

Community & practical notes
Who you'll meet: Flic en Flac is a resort town first, so many of the foreigners you'll see are on vacation. Mauritian Kreol, French and English are all in daily use on the island, and a little French goes a long way with neighbors and tradespeople. Expect to build a social life through the beach, the water and the regulars at your local restaurant rather than a formal expat scene.
LGBTQ expats: Mauritius's Supreme Court struck down the colonial-era law against gay sex in October 2023, and the Workers' Rights Act bars discrimination at work based on sexual orientation. Same-sex marriages and civil unions aren't recognized, transgender people can't change the gender on their documents, and conservative attitudes are still common. Collectif Arc-En-Ciel, founded in 2005, is the country's main LGBTQ organization and a good first contact.
Black Americans: Mauritius abolished slavery in 1835, and many Creole Mauritians trace their roots to the people enslaved on the island's plantations. Creole Mauritians are one of the island's main communities, alongside Indo-Mauritians and smaller Chinese and Franco-Mauritian communities. Politics and social life often run along community lines, and economic power has shifted over the decades, so it's worth reading up on that history before you arrive.
Healthcare: There's no hospital in Flic en Flac itself. The nearest major public hospital is Victoria Hospital in Candos, near Quatre Bornes. Private options include C-Care Wellkin in Moka, C-Care Darné in Floréal, and a C-Care general practice down the coast in Tamarin. Public care is free for citizens. Expats who use public hospitals are billed, specialist appointments can take up to three months, and ambulances can be unreliable. Budget for international health insurance from day one.
Limited mobility: The village is compact and set along one beach road, which helps. We couldn't find an accessibility guide for Flic en Flac, though, and buses are the only public transport into town. Plan on a car or a hired driver, and check step-free access at each rental and clinic before you commit.
Working online: Home internet runs about $30 a month in our data. If you earn from U.S. clients or an employer, Mauritius's Premium Visa is built for remote earners. Your U.S. workday lands in the Mauritian evening and night, which leaves the mornings for the beach.
Retiring here: A calm lagoon, a compact village and a budget near $1,200 a month for one person make Flic en Flac one of the easier places in Mauritius to picture a quiet retirement, as long as you're happy driving inland for medical care. The main route is the retirement permit for people 50 and over, built on a monthly transfer into a Mauritian bank. Compare it with other retirement visa options or start with our Mauritius guide.
