Bridgetown, the Barbados capital where the island's services start

About $2,300 a month for one person, a UNESCO-listed old town, and the main hospital and bus terminals close by. Who it suits, and why most expats sleep on the coast.

Plan on about $2,300 a month in U.S. dollars for one person in Bridgetown, with a realistic range of $1,900 to $2,700 depending on rent and how often you eat out. A couple should budget around $3,300 and a family of four around $4,900. A one-bedroom in the center runs about $1,200 a month, or about $900 a little further out.

Bridgetown is the capital and the island's only real city, and its old center and the Garrison are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The banks, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the main bus terminals are all here, so it suits people who want services within reach: remote workers, families who want a hospital nearby, and anyone hoping to manage without a car.

It suits fewer people as a place to come home to at night. Downtown empties after business hours and traffic backs up in and out of town, which is why most expats work and shop in Bridgetown but rent along the south or west coast.

Getting around

Transport in Bridgetown

Barbados drives on the left, and Bridgetown is where the island's bus network begins. The government Transport Board runs the big blue buses from the Fairchild Street terminal in town and the Princess Alice terminal on Princess Alice Highway. Privately owned yellow minibuses and white ZR vans with a maroon stripe work many of the same routes, usually faster and with the music up.

The fare is a flat BBD 3.50 (about $1.75) a ride. Government buses take exact fare only, while minibus and ZR conductors can usually make change. Stops are often marked "To City" or "Out of City," and you flag the bus down as it comes.

In the center, walking works: Broad Street and the Careenage are a few minutes apart. A car earns its keep once you live outside town. Buses reach most coastal towns, but inland areas are harder, and rush hour around Bridgetown eats time. Import duties make cars expensive to buy, so plenty of newcomers ride the bus or rent for a few months before deciding.

Community & practical notes

Day to day in the capital

The expat scene: Bridgetown is where expats come for errands, appointments and work rather than where they gather after dark. Most foreigners live along the coast and drive or bus in, so the city's community is more about offices and the port than beach bars. The island is English-speaking, which makes paperwork and small talk easy from day one. Remote workers here are usually on the Welcome Stamp, a 12-month permit for people paid from outside Barbados.

Healthcare: The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Bridgetown is the island's only acute-care public hospital, and free public care is for citizens and permanent residents, so newcomers pay their own way. Bayview Hospital is the main private option. Expect to pay upfront, and remember Medicare doesn't cover care abroad. For complex treatment, people sometimes fly to the U.S., Canada or the UK, so a plan with medical evacuation is worth having.

Remote work: Home internet runs about $65 a month. Spaces has coworking in the Broad Street and Careenage area, with day passes and dedicated desks, which helps if your apartment's connection wobbles or you want a desk near the banks and government offices.

Black Americans: Barbados is a majority-Black country, so Black Americans won't be the visible minority in Bridgetown's offices, churches and markets. You'll still be read as a foreigner and visitor at first, but the adjustment is more about island pace and prices than about standing out.

LGBTQ expats: Same-sex relationships between adults are legal in Barbados. If you're moving as a couple, check how your relationship is treated for residence before you apply, since a partner's status can depend on it.

Limited mobility: The city sits at sea level. There aren't hills to fight; it's the streets themselves that are the obstacle. The 2026 national budget funds a Bridgetown pilot to fix sidewalks and add curb ramps, tactile paving and accessible crossings, which tells you those things are missing today. Only two buses in the government fleet have wheelchair facilities, so plan on taxis or a car. View any apartment, its entrance and your daily route in person before you sign.

Retirement: Barbados has no retirement visa, which is the first thing retirees need to know. The realistic routes are visiting for up to six months at a time or the investor permit, which starts with a $300,000 home. For retirees who do qualify, Bridgetown's draw is having the main hospital close by, and a couple's budget of about $3,300 a month is the starting point. Our retirement visa guide compares countries with dedicated retiree programs, and our Barbados moving guide covers the rest of the island.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to live in Bridgetown, Barbados?

As of 2026, one person needs about $2,300 a month in U.S. dollars, with most people landing between $1,900 and $2,700. A couple should plan on about $3,300 a month and a family of four about $4,900. Rent is the biggest variable, and imported groceries and 17.5% VAT push everyday prices up.

How much is rent in Bridgetown?

A one-bedroom apartment in central Bridgetown costs about $1,200 a month as of 2026, typically between $1,000 and $1,400. Outside the center, a one-bedroom runs about $900, usually between $750 and $1,050.

What is the weather like in Bridgetown year round?

Warm all year, with an annual average near 81F. Average highs run from about 85F in January to about 88F in September. February through April is the driest stretch, and September through November is the wettest. Hurricane season runs from June to November.

Can I retire in Bridgetown, Barbados?

Yes, but not on a retirement visa, because Barbados doesn't have one. Retirees either visit for up to six months at a time or apply for the Special Entry and Reside Permit, which starts with owning a Barbados home worth at least $300,000. Free public healthcare is only for citizens and permanent residents, so budget for private insurance.

Can Americans work remotely from Bridgetown?

Yes. The Welcome Stamp lets you live in Barbados for 12 months while working for employers or clients outside the country, if you expect to earn at least $50,000 over the year. You can't take a job with a Barbados company on it. Check the official Welcome Stamp site for the program's current end date before planning a 2027 start.

Where do expats live near Bridgetown?

Most expats live along the coast rather than downtown. The south coast around Christ Church is livelier and easier on the budget, with buses into the city. The west coast parishes of St. James and St. Peter, around Holetown and Speightstown, are the most expensive part of the island.

Do you need a car to live in Bridgetown?

Not if you live in or near the city. Government buses, private minibuses and ZR vans all run from Bridgetown for a flat BBD 3.50 (about $1.75) a ride, and the center is walkable. A car helps if you live inland or commute at rush hour, but import duties make cars expensive, so many people rent first.

Is Bridgetown, Barbados safe for Americans?

Mostly, with ordinary precautions. The U.S. State Department rates Barbados Level 1, "exercise normal precautions," in an advisory issued in April 2026, while noting petty crime in tourist areas and violent crimes including robbery. Bridgetown scores 52 on our safety index. Avoid walking alone at night on beaches or in poorly lit areas, since downtown empties after business hours.
