A single person in Taichung should budget about $1,400 a month, and most budgets land between $1,100 and $1,600. A couple spends about $2,100 and a family of four about $3,000, all in U.S. dollars as of 2026. A one-bedroom near the center rents for around $500, or about $400 farther out, and an everyday meal out costs about $5.
Taichung is a city of about 2.9 million people in the middle of the island, known for sunny winters, wide tree-lined boulevards and a cafe and bakery scene locals are proud of. It suits remote workers and others paid in dollars who want Taiwan's safety and healthcare without living in the capital, and Taipei is still about an hour away by high-speed rail.
The trade-offs: the foreign community is smaller, so a little Mandarin pays off early, and the metro is a single line. Summers are hot and wet too, with average highs near 85F in July and the year's heaviest rain in August.

Getting around
Transport in Taichung
Taichung's metro is one line. The Green line opened in April 2021 and runs elevated, with driverless trains, from Beitun District in the north to the Taichung HSR station in Wuri District. That makes the high-speed rail easy to reach, and from there Taipei is about an hour away. A second route, the Blue line, broke ground in June 2025, but it's years from carrying passengers.
That leaves buses to do most of the daily work. Load an EasyCard and tap on and off. Our data puts a month of getting around at about $15. The city caps bus fares at NT$10 a trip for people in its resident discount program, but foreigners only qualify once they hold permanent residence (an APRC) and a registered Taichung address, so most new arrivals pay the regular fare.
Most residents lean on buses or a scooter, since Taichung is spread out and one rail line can't reach every neighborhood. If you'd rather skip both, look for an apartment within walking distance of a Green line station. A car starts to make sense with kids, or with a home on the city's edges.

Community & practical notes
What daily life takes in Taichung
The foreign community: Taichung's foreign community is small, so expect to build a circle on purpose. Language classes, gyms, hiking groups and local expat Facebook groups are the usual ways in, and it helps to join a few of those groups before you land.
Healthcare: If you work for a Taiwan employer, you join National Health Insurance through that job from your first day. Everyone else waits for six months of residence first, with one trip abroad of up to 30 days allowed, so bring international coverage to bridge the gap. Hunter Schultz, our healthcare coach, and ExpatInsure can help you plan it. For hospital care, China Medical University Hospital in North District runs international services and made Newsweek's Best Specialized Hospitals Asia-Pacific 2026 list. Call ahead to confirm English-speaking staff for the department you need.
Working remotely: Home internet runs about $25 a month. Remote work fits Taichung best when your paycheck comes from outside Taiwan, since local salaries are set for local costs.
Schools: Morrison Academy's Taichung campus in Beitun District teaches kindergarten through 12th grade in English, on an American-based, college-prep curriculum. It's accredited by WASC and the Association of Christian Schools International. It's a Christian school and Bible class is required for every student, so families who want a secular program should weigh that. About 60% of its students are U.S. citizens.
LGBTQ expats: Taiwan legalized same-sex marriage in May 2019, the first country in Asia to do so. If you plan to marry a Taiwanese partner or register a partnership here, check how the current rules apply to your situation before you plan around it.
Black Americans: First-hand accounts from Black Americans living in Taichung are scarce. One African American student writer who spent time in Taichung described a lot of staring and strangers touching their hair without asking, but was never refused service or entry anywhere and found Taiwan safe and welcoming overall. That's one visitor's view, so reach out to Black expats already living in central Taiwan before you commit.
Limited mobility: The central city sits about 370 feet above sea level on fairly level ground, which helps. We couldn't confirm step-free access station by station on the Green line, and sidewalks vary by block, often shared with parked scooters. Walk your daily route in person and make sure an apartment building has an elevator before you sign.
Retirement: Mild winters, with January highs averaging near 67F, and a $1,400 monthly budget make Taichung appealing for retirees. Getting residency is the hard part. The Gold Card's salary route asks for an average pre-tax salary of at least NT$160,000 a month in any one year within three years of applying, and pension funds, stocks and property income don't count as proof. Our retirement visa guide compares countries with an easier path, and our Taiwan moving guide covers every option on the island. If you're also weighing the south, see Kaohsiung.

How much does it cost to live in Taichung?
About $1,400 a month for one person, $2,100 for a couple and $3,000 for a family of four, in U.S. dollars as of 2026. A one-bedroom apartment near the center rents for around $500 a month, and about $400 outside the center.
Can Americans retire in Taichung?
It's possible but not simple. Living costs are moderate, about $1,400 a month for one person, but residency is the hurdle. Taiwan's Gold Card salary route requires an average pre-tax salary of at least NT$160,000 a month in one year within the last three years, and pension income can't be used as proof. Check every option before you plan a move.
Is Taichung good for LGBTQ expats?
Taiwan legalized same-sex marriage in May 2019, the first country in Asia to do so, and that applies in Taichung as everywhere else on the island. Couples with a non-Taiwanese partner should check how the marriage rules apply to them.
How far is Taichung from Taipei?
About an hour by high-speed rail. The Taichung HSR station sits in Wuri District and connects to the city's MRT Green line.
How good is healthcare in Taichung for expats?
Strong once you're in Taiwan's National Health Insurance. People employed in Taiwan join from their first day of work; others wait six months of residence, so bring private international coverage until then. Taichung has major teaching hospitals, including China Medical University Hospital.
What is the weather like in Taichung?
Warm and mostly sunny. Average highs sit near 67F in January and 85F in July. August is the wettest month, while November and December are the driest.
Do you need a car in Taichung?
No, but most residents use buses or a scooter. Taichung's metro has one line, the Green line, which links Beitun District to the Taichung high-speed rail station. Living near a Green line station makes going car-free easier.
