One person can live in New Taipei City on about $1,400 a month as of 2026, with our estimate running from $1,200 to $1,700 depending on how you live. A couple needs about $2,300 and a family of four about $3,400. A one-bedroom near a district center rents for around $600, or about $450 farther out.

New Taipei isn't one downtown. It's a ring of districts wrapped around Taipei, home to about 4 million people, and places like Banqiao and Xindian sit 15 to 30 minutes from the capital by metro. It suits remote workers and others paid in dollars who want Taipei within reach, plus a bigger apartment, river parks and mountain trails closer to home.

The tradeoff is language. Daily life runs on local districts, so you'll hear less English than in Taipei, and some Mandarin makes errands much easier. Summers are hot and wet, too: July highs average about 88F.

Getting around

Transport in New Taipei City

Most of New Taipei rides on Taipei's metro. Banqiao, Xindian and Tamsui all sit on Taipei Metro lines, and Banqiao station is also a transfer point for High Speed Rail. A ride costs NT$20 to NT$65 depending on distance, about $0.60 to $2 as of 2026, and our data puts a month of getting around at about $40. An EasyCard takes roughly 20% off token fares and also works on buses and YouBike bikes.

New Taipei runs its own rail on top of that. The driverless Circular line links districts around the edge without a detour through central Taipei, the Ankeng light rail serves Xindian's Ankeng area, the Danhai light rail serves Tamsui, and the Sanying line opened in June 2026 to connect Tucheng, Sanxia and Yingge.

Do you need a car? Not if you live near a station, which is the first thing to check when you pick an apartment. Up in the hills or out along the coast it's a different story, and that's where a scooter or car starts to pay off.

Community & practical notes

Settling in, district by district

Finding your people: Life here happens district by district, so your circle will come from what you join: Mandarin classes, hiking groups, a gym, or the bigger foreign community in Taipei a short metro ride away. Pick a home near a station and that last option stays easy.

Healthcare: Taiwan's National Health Insurance covers foreign residents once they qualify. If you work for a Taiwan employer, you're enrolled from your start date. Everyone else with a resident card joins after six months of living in Taiwan, and a second trip abroad, or one longer than a month, restarts that count. Bring international coverage for the gap; Hunter Schultz, our healthcare coach, and ExpatInsure can help you plan it. For bigger needs, Far Eastern Memorial Hospital in Banqiao is a full medical center with 81 specialties and an International Medical Center for foreign patients.

Working remotely: Home internet runs about $25 a month. With the metro, you can work from a Taipei cafe whenever you want company.

LGBTQ expats: Same-sex marriage has been legal in Taiwan since May 2019, a first in Asia. By March 2020, less than a year in, New Taipei had registered 722 same-sex marriages--the most of Taiwan's six largest cities. Taiwan Pride is held in Taipei each October; around 150,000 people marched in 2025.

Black Americans: We didn't find a first-hand account from a Black American living in New Taipei itself. Accounts from elsewhere in Taiwan describe warmth mixed with curiosity: one Black American man wrote that he was welcomed with real hospitality, though he sometimes had to clear up misconceptions about Black American culture. A Black Fulbright teacher in Kaohsiung was once introduced to his school as President Obama. Talk to Black expats already living in greater Taipei before you commit.

Limited mobility: Every Taipei Metro station has elevators and accessible gates, and that includes the stations in New Taipei's districts. Off the trains it's patchier, since older neighborhoods can be uneven and some districts climb into the hills. Walk your daily route in person and confirm a building has an elevator before you sign a lease.

Retirement: Lower rents than Taipei and a major hospital in Banqiao make New Taipei worth a look for retirees, but Taiwan has no dedicated retirement visa. One option is the Employment Gold Card, whose salary route is open in certain fields and counts only wages on a tax statement: an average of about $5,000 a month before tax as of 2026 (Taiwan sets it at NT$160,000), from any year in the three years before you apply. Pension income doesn't count. Our retirement visa guide compares countries with an easier path, and our Taiwan moving guide walks through the other visa options.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

How do you get from New Taipei City to Taipei?

By metro. Taipei Metro lines run straight into Banqiao, Xindian and Tamsui, and a ride costs NT$20 to NT$65 depending on distance, about $0.60 to $2 as of 2026. From Banqiao and Xindian the trip into Taipei takes about 15 to 30 minutes.

Can foreigners use Taiwan's national health insurance in New Taipei City?

Yes, once you qualify. Foreigners working for a Taiwan employer join National Health Insurance from their first day of work. Other residents with a resident card join after six months in Taiwan, so plan on private international coverage until then.

How much does it cost to live in New Taipei City?

Expatsi estimates about $1,400 a month for one person in New Taipei City as of 2026, and about $2,300 for a couple, in U.S. dollars. Rent is the biggest swing: districts farther from the metro cost less than those near a major station.

What is the weather like in New Taipei City?

Warm and wet. The annual average is about 71F, July highs average about 88F and January highs about 63F. Around 81 inches of rain falls in a typical year, with the heaviest months from June through September and August the wettest.

Can Americans retire in New Taipei City?

Yes, but not on a retirement visa, because Taiwan doesn't have one. Retirees need another route, such as the Employment Gold Card's salary test, which counts only past wages on a tax statement, or an investment or family-based visa. Expatsi's Taiwan moving guide compares the options.

Is New Taipei City more affordable than Taipei?

Mostly, yes, and rent is where you feel it. The districts around Taipei offer bigger apartments for less rent than inside the capital, while metro rides into Taipei from places like Banqiao and Xindian take 15 to 30 minutes.

Is New Taipei City safe for Americans?

Yes. New Taipei City scores 83 out of 100 on the safety index Expatsi tracks, which reflects low reported crime. Normal big-city habits, like watching your bag on crowded trains, are still worth keeping.

Do you need to speak Mandarin to live in New Taipei City?

You can get by without it, but you'll hear less English in New Taipei's local districts than in central Taipei. Basic Mandarin makes shopping, clinic visits and dealing with landlords much easier, and classes are also a good way to meet people.
