Timișoara: life along the Bega in Romania's far west

Monthly budgets in dollars, safety, hot summers and gray winters, and the visa question retirees hit first, in a Romanian city that sits close to Hungary and Serbia.

Budget about $1,400 a month for one person in Timișoara, $2,100 for a couple and $3,000 for a family of four (2026 figures). A one-bedroom near the center rents for around $600, closer to $450 farther out, and home internet costs about $10 a month. It's a city of about 251,000 people (2021 census) in Romania's far west, with Hungary and Serbia close by.

Timișoara suits remote workers earning in dollars, people who want a flat city they can cover by tram or bike, and anyone who'd rather live near Central Europe than near the Black Sea. Our safety index puts it at 75 out of 100.

It's a tougher fit if you need sun all year or an easy retirement. January average highs sit near 39F, August highs average about 86F, and Romania has no visa built for retirees. Flights home to the U.S. start with a connection, usually through Munich or Istanbul.

Getting around

Transport in Timișoara

Timișoara is flat, and that shapes daily life here more than anything else. If you live in or near the old center, you'll walk most errands, and a bike works well on the parks and paths along the Bega canal.

For longer trips, STPT, the city transit company, runs trams, trolleybuses and buses, plus metropolitan routes out to the surrounding towns. You can pay with a contactless bank card, buy tickets and day passes in the 24pay or mobilPay apps, or load a reusable STPT card at a sales point. Whatever you use, validate it every time you board: inspectors check, and riding without a valid ticket draws a fine. Our numbers put a month of local transport at about $35.

Traian Vuia International Airport is 12 km (about 7.5 miles) northeast of the center, and the E4 express bus runs there about every 30 minutes on weekdays, less often on weekends. Lufthansa City Airlines flies to Munich, and Turkish Airlines flies to Istanbul, which are the practical connections for trips back to the U.S.

You won't need a car inside the city. One is handy for weekends in the countryside or quick trips over the Hungarian and Serbian borders. Bucharest is a long train ride away, so most people fly when they need the capital.

Community & practical notes

What settling into Timișoara involves

Who you'll meet: There's no large American enclave here. Foreign residents tend to find each other through coworking spaces, language classes and the city's festival calendar, so expect to build a circle rather than join a ready-made one. Romanian matters for landlords and paperwork; start lessons early if you're staying.

Healthcare: Private care is where most foreigners start. Regina Maria owns Premiere Hospital, which Romania Insider called the biggest private hospital in western Romania when the deal closed in 2019; it has an outpatient center, MRI and CT, and a maternity service. MedLife opened its Medici's hospital here in December 2024, with 120 beds and 10 operating rooms. Our Romania moving guide explains the public insurance opt-in and what private clinic subscriptions cost.

Working remotely: Home internet runs about $10 a month. Cowork Timișoara has been around since 2017 and opened a second space in 2018, and it's an easy first stop for meeting other freelancers. Local pay is low by U.S. standards, so the math works best with income from outside Romania.

Schools: The British International School of Timișoara teaches children ages 4 to 18 on a British curriculum, mostly in English, and has offered the International Baccalaureate since 2022. Visit and ask about fees and admission well before the school year.

LGBTQ expats: Timișoara has held Pride TM every year since 2019, and the 2026 edition, June 29 to July 5, drew about 2,000 people to its parade. The parades haven't faced organized counter-protests or pushback from city authorities. Nationally the picture is harder: Romania still hasn't passed a law recognizing same-sex couples, even after the European Court of Human Rights ruled against it in the Buhuceanu case, and Oradea, another western city, tried to ban its Pride march again in 2025. If your partner's residence would rest on a U.S. marriage, get legal advice first.

Black Americans: Romania has a small Black population, and we found no first-hand accounts from Timișoara itself. An Afro-Brazilian woman who has lived in Romania for a decade told Travel Noire in 2021 that people often stare out of surprise, that teenagers once made monkey sounds at her in a mall, and that she still felt safer there than in Brazil. Plan on being noticed, and reach out to Black students and residents through local international groups before you sign a lease.

Limited mobility: The flat terrain is a real plus. Building access is the weak spot: many older apartment blocks and historic buildings have steps at the entrance and no elevator, so check both before you commit. A city-funded accessibility guide for event organizers came out in April 2025, which signals attention to the issue, but walk your own street, tram stop and pharmacy route in person.

Retiring here: Timișoara can work for retirees who like an active city and can handle gray winters, and a couple lives comfortably on about $2,100 a month. The hurdle is the visa. Romania's long-stay visa list has no category for retirees, so pensioners apply under a catch-all for "other purposes" and approval is case by case. On the plus side, the U.S. and Romania now have a Social Security agreement. Read our retirement visa guide and the visa chapter of our Romania moving guide before you plan around a move.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a car to live in Timișoara?

No. The city is flat and walkable in the center, and STPT runs trams, trolleybuses and buses you can pay for with a contactless bank card or an app. A car is mainly useful for weekend trips to the countryside or across the nearby Hungarian and Serbian borders.

How much does it cost to live in Timișoara, Romania?

Plan on about $1,400 a month for one person, $2,100 for a couple and $3,000 for a family of four, based on Expatsi's 2026 figures. A one-bedroom apartment near the center rents for around $600 a month, or about $450 outside the center. Housing is the biggest swing factor, so a lower-rent neighborhood or a shared place moves the total most.

Can you fly from Timișoara to the U.S.?

Not nonstop on the current schedule. Most trips connect through Munich on Lufthansa City Airlines or Istanbul on Turkish Airlines. The airport is about 7.5 miles from the center, linked by the E4 express bus.

Is Timișoara safe for Americans?

Yes, for most people. Expatsi's safety index rates Timișoara 75 out of 100. Use normal city sense with your belongings, and take extra care on Romanian roads, where driving is the bigger everyday risk.

Can Americans retire in Timișoara?

Yes, but there's no dedicated retirement visa. Romania's long-stay visa list has no retiree category, so pensioners usually apply under the catch-all "other purposes" visa, and approval is decided case by case. Work with a lawyer, bring strong proof of income and health coverage, and have a backup plan.

Is Timișoara good for remote workers?

It's a solid base if your income comes from outside Romania. Home internet costs about $10 a month, coworking spaces such as Cowork Timișoara have operated since 2017, and Romania's time zone puts a U.S. workday in your afternoon and evening.

Is Timișoara LGBTQ-friendly?

The city hosts an annual Pride festival, Pride TM, held since 2019, and its 2026 parade drew about 2,000 people without organized counter-protests. Romania's laws lag behind: the country still doesn't legally recognize same-sex couples, which matters if a partner's residence depends on your relationship.

What is the weather like in Timișoara?

Timișoara has four distinct seasons. January average highs are around 39F with lows near 27F, while July and August average highs reach about 85F to 86F. Winters tend to be gray, and summer is the sunniest stretch of the year.
