Debrecen: Hungary's eastern university city, from about $1,600 a month

A tram down the main avenue, a big Reformed church on the central square, and a medical school that teaches in English, with rents below Budapest's.

A single person in Debrecen spends about $1,600 a month all in, and most land somewhere between $1,300 and $1,800. A couple needs about $2,200 and a family of four about $3,200. Rent is the big line: around $600 for a one-bedroom in the center, or about $450 farther out. All figures are 2026 estimates in U.S. dollars.

Debrecen is Hungary's second-largest city, about 202,000 people, and the University of Debrecen shapes much of it. It suits remote workers who want EU life on a smaller budget, families looking at an English-language IB school, and anyone with a Hungarian job or Hungarian family out east. It suits people who need English at every counter less well, since English thins out once you leave the campus.

Budapest is two and a half to three hours away by train, close enough for weekends but not for a daily commute. Before you pick an apartment, pick your permit: Hungary's residence rules, not the rent, decide who can stay.

Getting around

Transport in Debrecen

DKV, the city transit company, runs Debrecen's trams, trolleybuses and buses, and the same tickets and passes work on all three. Validate a new ticket on every ride. You can buy a single from the driver, but it costs extra. A monthly pass runs about $25 and saves the hassle.

Tram Line 1 is the route you'll use most. It runs from the main railway station through the center and out to Nagyerdő, the Great Forest park area on the city's north side. Cycling is a practical option too: the city has a wide network of bike routes, though some are shared with people on foot.

For travel, Debrecen has its own airport, with scheduled buses from the main railway station. Routes change by season, so check what's flying when you book. Flights home to the U.S. mean getting to Budapest first.

Do you need a car? Not for daily life in the city. Local taxis fill the gaps at a modest price. A car earns its keep for countryside weekends, and Debrecen connects straight to Hungary's motorway network.

Living here

Community and practical notes

Who you'll meet

The University of Debrecen had 7,800 international students in the 2025-26 school year, and its medical school teaches in English. That gives the center a younger, more international crowd than a city this size usually has. Off campus, daily life runs in Hungarian, a language unrelated to anything most Americans studied in school. Budget time for lessons from the start.

Healthcare

The University of Debrecen Clinical Center is the big public hospital here, with nearly 3,500 beds and about 25 clinics across its campuses. Your U.S. insurance won't work, and every Hungarian permit application asks for proof of coverage, so plan on a private policy. Our Hungary guide explains when newcomers can join the public system. In an emergency, dial 112.

Remote work

Home internet costs about $15 a month. Debrecen keeps Budapest's clock, so you're usually six hours ahead of New York. An East Coast afternoon meeting lands in your evening.

Schools

The International School of Debrecen is a private IB World School authorized for the Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma programs. The Diploma and Middle Years programs teach in English. The primary years teach in English and Hungarian, so ask how that split works if your child doesn't speak Hungarian.

LGBTQ expats

Hungary's 2021 law restricting how sexual and gender diversity can be shown to children was still in force at the start of October 2026. On September 14, 2026, the new government submitted a bill to remove those restrictions, but it leaves the anti-LGBT language in the constitution untouched. Pride marches went ahead with police authorization in 2026, after an EU court ruling. Check where the bill stands before you move.

Black Americans

We haven't found a reliable source on day-to-day life for Black Americans in Debrecen specifically. The university's international student body is the closest thing to a community network here, so before you commit, ask current students or alumni what the city is like away from campus.

Limited mobility

We couldn't confirm which DKV trams and buses are step-free. Before you sign a lease, ask DKV about the routes near the apartment, and check whether the building has a working elevator.

Retirement

Debrecen's budget, about $2,200 a month for a couple, makes it tempting for retirees. The visa is the obstacle. Hungary's 2024 immigration law abolished the flexible permit retirees used to rely on, and there's no permit for living on a pension. Realistic routes run through Hungarian family, Hungarian ancestry or the investor fund. Compare countries that do welcome retirees in our guide to retirement visas, and read the full guide to moving to Hungary first.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to live in Debrecen, Hungary?

Plan on about $1,600 a month for one person in Debrecen, with most singles spending between $1,300 and $1,800. A couple spends about $2,200 and a family of four about $3,200. A one-bedroom in the center rents for about $600, or about $450 outside it. These are 2026 estimates in U.S. dollars.

What is the weather like in Debrecen?

Debrecen has warm summers and cold winters. Average highs reach about 82F to 83F in July and August, and average January lows sit around 26F. The yearly average is about 52F, with roughly 22 inches of precipitation, most of it in late spring and summer.

Is English widely spoken in Debrecen?

Around the University of Debrecen, yes, since thousands of international students study there in English. Elsewhere in the city, English thins out quickly, and offices, landlords and many shops work in Hungarian. Expect to learn some Hungarian or bring a translation app.

How far is Debrecen from Budapest?

Debrecen is in eastern Hungary, two and a half to three hours from Budapest by train. That's an easy weekend trip, and it's also the route to Budapest's airport for flights to the U.S., but it's too far for a daily commute.

Are there international schools in Debrecen?

Yes. The International School of Debrecen is a private IB World School offering the Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma programs. The Middle Years and Diploma programs are taught in English, while the primary years use English and Hungarian.

Is Debrecen safe for Americans?

Debrecen scores 70 out of 100 on Expatsi's safety index, with a crime index of 30, where lower is better. The U.S. State Department rated Hungary Level 1, exercise normal precautions, in April 2026. Use the same street sense you would in any mid-sized American city.

Can Americans retire in Debrecen?

Not on a pension alone. Hungary's 2024 immigration law removed the flexible permit retirees once used, and there's no retirement or passive-income permit now. Americans can stay 90 days in any 180 as visitors. Longer stays usually need Hungarian family, Hungarian ancestry, or an investment through an approved real estate fund.
