Budget about $1,400 a month in U.S. dollars for one person in Pécs, and most people land between $1,100 and $1,600. A couple spends about $2,000 and a family of four about $2,800. A one-bedroom in the center rents for around $500, or closer to $400 outside it. All of these are 2026 estimates.

Pécs sits at the foot of the Mecsek hills in southern Hungary, a city of about 139,000 people. It fits remote workers and people with portable income who want a slower, walkable EU city with a lot of history packed into its old town: the Mosque of Pasha Qasim, early Christian burial sites and the Zsolnay Quarter are all close together. It fits people who need English everywhere less well. Away from the university, daily life happens in Hungarian.

Budapest is about two and a half hours away on the direct train, fine for weekends but not for commuting. The rent is rarely the hard part here. The harder question is which Hungarian residence permit you qualify for, so start there.

Getting around

Transport in Pécs

Tüke Busz runs the city's public buses. You can buy single tickets, a book of 10, or a monthly pass, and the same ticket works on every city bus. Transit runs about $20 a month, so a pass pays off fast if you ride most days.

The old town is compact, and once you're in it you'll walk almost everywhere. Getting up to it is the workout. The main railway station sits about 0.9 miles south of the center, and the walk to Széchenyi tér takes 18 to 20 minutes, uphill the whole way. A bus leaves from right by the station if you'd rather not.

For short hops, Pécsike is the city's e-bike share, and the first 30 minutes of a ride are free. Blinkee electric scooters also work inside city limits.

To reach Budapest, take the direct Mecsek InterCity: about two and a half hours, with trains roughly every two hours. Coaches take about as long.

Do you need a car? Not for life in town. One helps if you want to explore the Mecsek hills and the villages and vineyards of the south on your own schedule.

Community and practical notes

The university crowd

The University of Pécs says it has more than 20,000 students, and 20% of them are international. Its medical school has taught General Medicine in English since 1986 and Dentistry since 2005; about two-thirds of its students come from abroad. That's where you'll hear the most English. Plan on Hungarian lessons anyway: shops, landlords and city offices mostly work in Hungarian.

Seeing a doctor

The University of Pécs Clinical Centre is the city's university hospital. Medicare doesn't pay for care abroad, so line up private health coverage before you move. Our Hungary guide covers when newcomers can join the public system. For emergencies, dial 112.

Working remotely

Home internet runs about $15 a month. Pécs is on Budapest time, usually six hours ahead of New York, so East Coast afternoon calls land in your evening.

Schools

We couldn't verify an English-language international school in Pécs. Families with kids who don't speak Hungarian should confirm schooling options before signing a lease.

LGBTQ expats

Hungary's 2021 law limiting how sexual and gender diversity can appear in content for children was still in force when we checked in October 2026. On September 14, 2026, the government sent Parliament a bill to strip those limits from the child protection, media, advertising and education laws. Human Rights Watch notes that it leaves the anti-LGBTQ basis in the constitution. The assembly rules used against Pride marches untouched. Look up where the bill stands before you move.

Black Americans

We haven't found a solid source on everyday life for Black Americans in Pécs. The university's international student body is the most diverse community in town, so its students and alumni are good people to ask before you commit.

Limited mobility

Pécs is built on a slope, and the uphill climb from the station to the center gives you a sense of it. We couldn't confirm which buses or routes are step-free. Ask Tüke Busz about the lines near any apartment you're considering, and check the building for a working elevator.

Retiring in Pécs

A couple can live here on about $2,000 a month, which makes Pécs tempting for retirees. The permit is the problem. Hungary's new immigration law, applied from March 2024, abolished the residence permit for other purposes, the flexible option many non-workers used. What's left mostly runs through work, family ties or the guest-investor fund route. See how Hungary compares with countries that welcome retirees in our retirement visa guide, and read our guide to moving to Hungary before you plan around Pécs.
