Budget about $1,500 a month for one person in Savusavu, with $1,100 to $1,900 as the realistic range depending on how you live. A couple needs about $2,100, and a family of four about $3,000. A one-bedroom apartment near the center rents for around $500 a month, or about $400 farther out. These are 2026 figures in U.S. dollars built on limited data, so a scouting trip will sharpen them.

Savusavu is a harbor town of about 5,000 people on Vanua Levu, set on a sheltered bay that draws cruising sailors and divers. Daily life runs along the waterfront, between the market, a handful of cafes and the yacht club, with hot springs steaming near the shore.

It fits retirees and remote workers who want a slow coastal routine with the water close by, and who don't mind flying out for specialist care or a big shopping trip. If you need regular specialist appointments or big-city choice, Fiji's main island will serve you better.

Getting around

Transport in Savusavu

Savusavu's center is compact. The market sits near the main bus station, and most errands are a short walk along the waterfront. Beyond town, people rely on taxis or their own car. If you drive, know that the U.S. State Department calls night driving outside cities hazardous because of poor lighting, stray animals and potholes. It also advises Americans to avoid public buses and minivans over safety concerns.

Getting off the island takes more planning. Fiji Link flies from Nadi to Savusavu twice a day, about 55 minutes in the air, and there are daily flights from Suva. Flights into Labasa are often cheaper, and the drive from Labasa to Savusavu takes about 90 minutes.

By sea, Goundar Shipping runs a daily bus-and-ferry service from Suva by way of Nabouwalu that stops in Savusavu on its way to Labasa, roughly 12 to 14 hours end to end. The Taveuni Princess links Savusavu and Taveuni six days a week, Sunday to Friday. Ferry times change with little notice, so confirm with the operator on the day you travel.

Community and practical notes

The people, care and connections in Savusavu

Who you'll meet

Social life here centers on the water. Newcomers tend to find their people through the Savusavu Yacht Club and events run by the Savusavu Chamber of Commerce, while plenty more happens at potlucks and barbecues. The circle is small, so you'll see the same faces often. To plan the move itself, Find Your Feet Fiji builds Fiji relocation plans, and Lynette Wilson guides newcomers around the country.

Healthcare

Savusavu Hospital is a small hospital on the northern outskirts of town. Medical centers keep weekday hours, and pharmacies close on Sundays. For anything serious, expect a trip to Labasa Hospital or off the island. Fiji's Health Ministry has reported the hospital's x-ray machine and a blood analyzer out of service, with patients sent to Labasa or a private provider in Savusavu, so ask what's working before you count on it.

Across Fiji, hospitals often want payment up front, care outside the big cities can fall below U.S. standards, and the State Department strongly recommends medical evacuation coverage. Hunter Schultz, a healthcare coach, and ExpatInsure, which sells global health insurance, can help you get coverage in place.

Internet and remote work

Home internet runs about $65 a month. Phone service reaches many parts of Vanua Levu but not everywhere, so if you work on video calls, test the connection at the exact house before you sign a lease.

Retiring in Savusavu

A couple can live here on about $2,100 a month, which makes Savusavu worth a look on a fixed income. Weigh that against the distance from specialist care and plan for flights to Suva or overseas. See Fiji's residence routes in Moving to Fiji, and compare other countries in our retirement visas guide.

LGBTQ expats

Fiji's constitution bans discrimination based on sexual orientation, and consensual same-sex relationships aren't a crime. The State Department notes LGB travelers may run into obstacles with adoption and marriage, so get wills and powers of attorney settled before you go.

Black Americans

We didn't find firsthand accounts from Black Americans living in Savusavu. In a town this small, a visit with a local guide is the best way to judge how daily life would feel for you.

Limited mobility

Savusavu is hard going with a wheelchair or limited mobility. Fiji rarely enforces its disability protections, and accessible vehicles are scarce across the country.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Is there an expat community in Savusavu?

Yes, a small one. Many foreign residents connect through the Savusavu Yacht Club and Savusavu Chamber of Commerce events, and visiting sailors pass through the bay. Expect a close-knit group where people know each other, not a large expat scene.

How do you get to Savusavu from Nadi?

Fiji Link flies from Nadi to Savusavu twice a day, a flight of about 55 minutes. Another option is flying to Labasa, often for less, and driving about 90 minutes to Savusavu. Goundar Shipping also runs a daily bus-and-ferry trip from Suva that takes roughly 12 to 14 hours.

What is healthcare like in Savusavu?

Savusavu has a small public hospital, medical centers open on weekdays and pharmacies open Monday to Saturday. Serious cases are referred to Labasa Hospital or beyond. Fiji hospitals often require payment up front, and the U.S. State Department strongly recommends medical evacuation insurance.

Can you retire in Savusavu?

Yes, if you're comfortable living far from specialist care. A retired couple can expect to spend about $2,100 a month in Savusavu. Serious medical cases go to Labasa or off the island, so medical evacuation coverage is worth having. Fiji offers a residence permit for people with assured income.

Is Savusavu safe for Americans?

Savusavu scores 62 on Expatsi's safety index, where higher means safer. The U.S. State Department's December 2024 advisory put Fiji at Level 1, its lowest. It still advises against driving outside cities after dark and recommends avoiding public buses and minivans.
