A single person in Manama should budget about $1,800 a month in U.S. dollars, and our 2026 data puts most single budgets between $1,400 and $2,100. A couple needs about $2,800 and a family of four about $4,100. A one-bedroom in the center rents for around $900 a month, or about $650 farther out.
Manama is Bahrain's capital and where most of the country's working life happens: banks, embassies, ministries, and the malls of Seef. English works for nearly every errand.
The hard part right now is security. Iranian drones and missiles have hit buildings in the capital since February 2026, and the State Department kept Bahrain at Level 3, Reconsider Travel, when it renewed the advisory in August 2026. Manama makes sense if a job or family is already pulling you here. As a first move abroad picked for lifestyle, it's a hard sell until that settles.

Getting around
Transport in Manama
Plan on a car, or on a lot of rides. Crown Relocations, which moves families to Bahrain, calls owning a vehicle almost a necessity, and Germany's foreign office describes public transport in Bahrain as barely developed. Buses do run, and you pay cash as you board, but they're mostly used by locals.
Uber, Careem and Bahrain Taxi all appear on the transport ministry's list of licensed ride services, and between them they cover most trips around the capital. If you flag a street taxi, ask for the meter before you set off. Our data puts monthly transport spending around $30.
Walking works in short stretches from November through March, when average highs run from about 69F to 82F. From May through September highs sit around 97F to 104F, and nobody walks far. Once you're a resident you'll need a Bahraini driver's license from the Traffic Directorate. Traffic keeps to the right, and the legal blood-alcohol limit for drivers is zero.

Who you'll meet
Manama is the center of Bahrain's expat working life, with bankers, embassy staff, contractors and service workers from many countries. Social life tends to run through Seef's malls and the cafes and restaurants of Adliya.
Healthcare
Germany's foreign office rates medical care in Bahrain as generally comparable to Germany's and says medical staff usually speak English. Under Bahrain's SEHATI insurance system, expats are covered through an employer's plan or private insurance, not the free public coverage citizens get. If no employer is covering you, arrange international health coverage before you land, and add medical evacuation coverage, which the German foreign office recommends.
Safety this year
Our data gives Manama a safety index of 55, a measure of everyday crime, not war. In March 2026, debris from an Iranian drone attack on an office tower in Seef killed a Bahraini woman. As of June 2026, the strikes had killed three people in Bahrain and injured more than 51. As of October 2026, Germany's foreign office still strongly advises against travel to Bahrain and warns that airspace closures remain a risk. The State Department now lets only family members 18 or older join U.S. government employees posted here, which is worth weighing if you'd bring children.
Working online
Home internet runs about $45 a month in our data. Remote workers should keep a backup plan for travel since flight disruptions have been part of 2026.
LGBTQ expats
Same-sex acts aren't a crime in Bahrain, but there are no laws protecting anyone from discrimination, and Germany's foreign office advises discretion in public. Expect to keep your private life private, and talk to LGBTQ people who've lived in Manama before you sign a contract.
Black Americans
We didn't find recent first-person reporting from Black Americans in Manama. The closest account, a Ugandan-British mother profiled by Travel Noire in March 2021, called Bahrain very family-friendly while worrying her children could be the only Black kids in their class. Ask Black Americans who've lived in Bahrain lately, and ask schools directly about their student mix.
Limited mobility
We couldn't find an accessibility guide for Manama. The city is flat, but daily life assumes a car, and summer heat makes even short walks hard. If you need an accessible vehicle, book ahead rather than hailing one. Before you sign a lease, confirm working elevators, step-free entrances and a drop-off point at the door.
Retiring here
Bahrain's Golden Residency for retirees asks non-resident retirees for a pension above about $10,600 a month (Bahrain sets it at BD4,000). Property owners can also qualify through the real estate route with a home worth at least about $345,000 (BD130,000), a threshold Bahrain cut in November 2025. With strikes still possible, most retirees will want to wait. Compare other retirement visa options or read our Bahrain guide.

Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Can Americans retire in Manama?
Yes, through Bahrain's Golden Residency. Non-resident retirees qualify with a pension above BD4,000 a month (about $10,600), and owning Bahraini property worth at least BD130,000 (about $345,000) is another route. Fees are BD5 to apply and BD300 at issuance. Given the 2026 strikes, many retirees will want to wait before committing.
How hot does Manama get?
Very. In July and August average highs reach about 104F, and from May through September they stay near or above 97F. Winters are mild, with January highs around 69F. Rain is rare, about 3.5 inches a year.
How much does it cost to live in Manama, Bahrain?
Expatsi's 2026 data puts a single person's monthly budget in Manama at about $1,800 in U.S. dollars, with most falling between $1,400 and $2,100. Rent is the biggest piece: a one-bedroom apartment in the center goes for around $900 a month, and about $650 outside the center.
Do you need a car to live in Manama?
Most expats find you do, or you rely on ride apps. Public transport in Bahrain is limited, with buses used mostly by locals. Uber, Careem and Bahrain Taxi are licensed to operate. To drive as a resident you'll need a Bahraini driver's license, and traffic keeps to the right.
Can you buy property in Manama to get residency?
Yes. Bahrain's Golden Residency lets foreigners who own property worth at least BD130,000 (about $345,000) apply for a 10-year renewable residence permit with the right to work and to sponsor family. Bahrain lowered the threshold from BD200,000 in November 2025.
Is Manama safe for Americans in 2026?
It's riskier than usual. Iranian drones and missiles have hit Bahrain since February 2026, including buildings in Manama, and the State Department rates Bahrain Level 3, Reconsider Travel, due to terrorism and armed conflict (renewed August 2026). Everyday crime is a smaller concern than the conflict, so check the latest advisory before you plan anything.
Is English widely spoken in Manama?
Yes. English works for most daily errands in Manama, and medical staff in Bahrain usually speak English. Learning some Arabic still helps with neighbors and smaller businesses.
