Juffair: Manama's high-rise Navy district, and what 2026 changed

What it costs, who it suits, and why the U.S. base next door matters more than ever since this year's strikes.

Plan on roughly $1,600 a month in U.S. dollars for one person living in Juffair, with most single budgets in our 2026 data landing between $1,300 and $1,900. A couple needs about $2,600, and a family of four about $3,800. Rent is the big line: a one-bedroom in the middle of the district goes for around $750 a month, and about $550 a little farther out.

Juffair is the Manama district of towers, supermarkets and late-night restaurants that grew up around Naval Support Activity Bahrain, headquarters of the U.S. Fifth Fleet. For years it's been the easiest landing in Bahrain for Americans, with plenty of English, familiar chains and a quick ride into central Manama.

Here's the catch. Since February 2026, Iranian missile and drone strikes have hit Manama, Juffair included, and after the first strikes the Navy's regional command concluded the neighborhood was no longer safe for American personnel. The State Department kept Bahrain at Level 3, Reconsider Travel, when it renewed the advisory in August 2026. Right now Juffair suits people whose work brings them here and who've weighed that risk, not anyone picking a first home abroad on lifestyle alone.

Getting around

Transport in Juffair

Most expats in Bahrain own a car, and in Juffair a car or a ride app does most of the work. Taxis run on meters (make sure the driver switches it on), and both Uber and Careem operate across the island. A taxi between Juffair and central Manama, under 3 miles apart, takes about five minutes and costs around $7 to $9.

There are buses, but transit is thin: Germany's foreign ministry calls public transport in Bahrain barely developed. Inside Juffair, groceries, gyms and restaurants sit close together, so errands on foot work well from November through March. From May through September average highs run from about 97F to 104F, and even a short walk gets punishing.

If you plan to drive, you'll need to convert your U.S. license to a Bahraini one. Traffic keeps to the right, and roundabouts handle a lot of the intersections.

Community

Community & practical notes

Who lives here: Juffair has long been the most American corner of Bahrain, with service members, contractors and young expats from many countries sharing the towers. Weekend nights get loud around Shabab Avenue, the restaurant strip locals nickname "American Alley", where some spots stay open around the clock.

Healthcare: Bahrain Specialist Hospital, a private hospital with English-speaking staff, has a Juffair location, according to the UK government's list of medical facilities. American Mission Hospital, Bahrain's oldest private hospital, dates to 1903 and opened its larger King Hamad American Mission Hospital in A'Ali in January 2023. Plan on private health insurance from your first day; Bahrain's Golden Residency routes require local coverage anyway.

Safety this year: Our data gives Juffair a safety index of 56, but that measures everyday crime, not war. As of June 2026, the strikes had killed three people in Bahrain and injured more than 51, and Iran said it targeted U.S. installations in Juffair again in July 2026. The State Department also lets only family members 18 or older join U.S. government employees posted here, a useful signal if you'd bring kids.

LGBTQ expats: Same-sex acts aren't a crime in Bahrain, and Germany's foreign ministry says active prosecution of gay or trans people is rare. That's a low bar for feeling safe. There's no legal protection from housing discrimination; the state recognizes only male and female on documents, which matters for trans and nonbinary residents. Keep a low profile in public and get local advice first.

Black Americans: We didn't find current reporting from Black Americans living in Juffair. The closest first-person account, a Black British mother profiled by Travel Noire in 2021, called Bahrain family-friendly but noted her kids might be the only Black children in their class. Talk to Black Americans who've lived in Bahrain recently before you commit.

Limited mobility: We couldn't find an accessibility guide for Juffair. The district is flat and compact, which helps, but daily life assumes a car and the summer heat limits how far anyone goes on foot. Before you sign a lease, check for working elevators, step-free entrances and a drop-off spot at the door.

Working online: Home internet runs about $45 a month in our data.

Retiring here: Bahrain has a retirement route, the Golden Residency for retirees, which asks for a pension of at least BD4,000 a month (about $10,600). Living next to a base that's been targeted in 2026 makes Juffair a hard pick for retirees until the conflict settles. Compare other retirement visa options or read our Bahrain guide.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to live in Juffair, Bahrain?

Expatsi's 2026 estimates put a one-person budget in Juffair at about $1,600 a month in U.S. dollars, and a couple at about $2,600. Housing is the largest expense, so the building you choose moves the total more than anything else.

Is Juffair safe for Americans in 2026?

Not by U.S. government standards right now. Juffair hosts the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet headquarters, and Iranian missile and drone strikes have hit the district since February 2026. After the first strikes, U.S. Naval Forces Central Command concluded the neighborhood was no longer safe for American personnel, and the State Department rates Bahrain Level 3, Reconsider Travel. Check the current advisory before any move.

Is Juffair good for families?

It's a hard call in 2026. The district is convenient, with supermarkets and restaurants close by, but the State Department currently allows only family members 18 or older to join U.S. government employees in Bahrain. Families should weigh that signal along with Expatsi's family-of-four estimate of about $3,800 a month.

Is Juffair LGBTQ-friendly?

Not openly. Same-sex acts aren't criminalized in Bahrain and Germany's foreign ministry says active prosecution is rare, but there are no anti-discrimination protections and the state recognizes only male and female genders. Most LGBTQ expats keep a low profile in public.

Do you need a car to live in Juffair?

Not strictly, but most expats in Bahrain drive. Uber, Careem and metered taxis cover the island, and errands inside Juffair are walkable in the cooler months. Public buses are limited, so anyone working outside the district usually ends up with a car or a ride app habit.

Why do so many Americans live in Juffair?

Juffair grew up around Naval Support Activity Bahrain, the U.S. Navy base that houses the Fifth Fleet, so it filled with service members, contractors and businesses that cater to them. English is widely used, and familiar chains and late-night restaurants line streets like Shabab Avenue.

What is the weather like in Juffair?

Hot and dry. Average highs reach about 104F in July and August, while January averages highs near 69F and lows near 58F. The area gets about 3.5 inches of rain a year, mostly between November and March.

Can Americans retire in Juffair?

Yes. Bahrain's Golden Residency for retirees is a 10-year permit that requires a pension of at least BD4,000 a month (about $10,600) and Bahrain health insurance. Given the 2026 strikes near the U.S. base, many retirees will want to wait or look at other parts of Bahrain.
