Plan on about $2,400 a month in U.S. dollars for one person in Klagenfurt, with most single budgets landing between $1,900 and $2,800. A couple spends around $3,300 and a family of four around $4,800. A one-bedroom in the center rents for roughly $950, or about $800 once you move farther out.

Klagenfurt is the capital of Carinthia, home to about 101,000 people (2020 count) at the eastern end of the Wörthersee. It suits people who want lake swimming in summer and a calm, orderly small city the rest of the year: remote workers with U.S. income, retirees, and families eyeing the international school on the same lake.

It's a poor fit if you need a local job in English or a big-city social life. English-language jobs are scarce, daily life runs in German, and winters are cold and gray, with January highs near 35F.

Getting around

Transport in Klagenfurt

The center is small enough to walk, and KMG Klagenfurt Mobil's city buses handle the rest, carrying about 20 million passengers a year. You can buy single tickets from the driver or in the KlagenfurtMobil app. Budget about $65 a month for local transport. A bike rental network adds 270 bikes at almost 50 stations around Klagenfurt and nearby towns, including one at the university.

Train travel changed in December 2025, when the Koralmbahn opened. The fastest trains now reach Graz in 41 minutes, and Vienna is 3 hours 10 minutes away, with 26 direct connections a day.

Klagenfurt Airport is small. Its summer 2026 schedule had Vienna up to 11 times a week, plus London, Cologne, Mallorca, Rome and several Greek islands. Coming from the U.S. means a connection, often in Vienna. Graz Airport is another option: timed train connections get you there from Klagenfurt in a little over an hour.

If you live centrally, you can manage without a car. One earns its keep for lake towns, mountain valleys and weekend trips.

Community & practical notes

Settling into Klagenfurt

Who you'll meet: Most of the international crowd comes through the University of Klagenfurt, which has about 13,300 students, roughly 30% of them from abroad. The Carinthian International Club helps international staff and their families get settled. We couldn't find a count of Americans here, so plan on building a circle through work, German classes and neighbors rather than an American association.

Healthcare: Klinikum Klagenfurt am Wörthersee, with more than 1,300 beds, is Carinthia's largest hospital and its main referral center, so most specialist care is in town. Expect forms, letters and appointment systems in German.

Working remotely: Home internet runs about $35 a month. Because English-language jobs are scarce, Klagenfurt works best when your income already comes from elsewhere.

Schools: International School Carinthia, in Velden am Wörthersee on the same lake, is an IB school teaching in English and German. It has been authorized for the IB Diploma since June 2020. Ask about places and fees before you sign a lease.

LGBTQ expats: Same-sex marriage has been legal in Austria since January 2019. Klagenfurt's queer scene is small but visible: the local association Queer Klagenfurt organizes the city's Pride parade, and the 2026 parade, the 11th in a row, drew more than 1,100 people.

Black Americans: We couldn't find reliable figures on how many Black Americans live in Klagenfurt, or first-hand accounts we could verify. If you face discrimination at work, in housing or in shops, the federal Equal Treatment Ombud (Gleichbehandlungsanwaltschaft) has a regional office in Klagenfurt that covers all grounds of discrimination. Its advice is free and confidential, and translation can be arranged.

Limited mobility: In 2026, KMG, the city and the Carinthian association for blind and visually impaired people launched a joint push to make city buses easier to use, with a new accessibility guide and driver training. We couldn't confirm that every bus is step-free, so check your daily routes. Confirm whether a building has an elevator and level entry before you sign a lease.

Retirement: Klagenfurt suits retirees who want quiet, a lake and a big hospital nearby, at about $3,300 a month for a couple. Summers are pleasant, with July highs near 80F; winters bring January lows near 22F.
