Budget about $1,700 a month in U.S. dollars for one person in Maribor and $2,600 for a couple. A one-bedroom in the center rents for around $700, and closer to $600 farther out. Treat these as estimates: a single person's month can land anywhere from about $1,400 to $2,000, mostly depending on rent, and a family of four should plan on about $3,800.
About 114,300 people live here on the Drava River in Slovenia's northeast. Maribor suits people who want a real working city with a university, vineyards on the doorstep and the Pohorje range at the edge of town, for less than Ljubljana costs. A safety index of 82 puts it in calm territory, and Graz is under an hour's drive.
It's a harder fit if you need an English-speaking social life or a local job. The foreign community is small, daily life runs in Slovenian, and winters are gray and cold, with January average highs near 40F.

Getting around
Transport in Maribor
Maribor's center is compact, and most errands there are a walk. For everything else there's Marprom, the city bus company, whose routes reach every part of town. You can buy tickets on the bus, at the main bus station, at the tourist information center or at kiosks. Arriva Slovenija runs the suburban and regional buses.
A city bus also runs out to the foot of Pohorje. From there the Pohorska vzpenjača gondola climbs from about 1,080 feet to about 3,420 feet in around 10 minutes. It has been shut for inspections and repairs at times, so check that it's running before you plan a ski day around it.
Maribor has train connections to Ljubljana and to neighboring countries. By road, the capital is about 93 miles away (around 1 hour 40 minutes), Graz about 40 miles (around 45 minutes) and Vienna about 163 miles (around 3 hours). For flights home to the U.S., Graz is the nearest of those cities, with Ljubljana, Vienna and Zagreb as the other options.
You can live in the city without a car, and monthly transport averages about $35. Many people still want one for weekends in the surrounding wine country or quick runs over the border into Austria.

What daily life in Maribor is like
Who you'll meet
Maribor spent decades as one of Yugoslavia's big industrial centers, and many of its factories closed after Slovenia's independence in 1991. Today the University of Maribor, with its engineering and computer science faculties, gives the city a younger edge. There's no American network to plug into. Foreigners who settle well tend to learn Slovenian and build a circle through work, the university or classes.
Healthcare
The main hospital is University Medical Centre Maribor (UKC Maribor), a public hospital providing specialist and advanced care for the wider region. Day-to-day care runs through the Maribor Community Health Center (Zdravstveni dom Maribor), where you'd sign up with a family doctor. Both, plus the 24-hour pharmacy on Ljubljanska ulica, are on the UK government's list of English-speaking providers in Slovenia, updated March 2026.
Working remotely
Home internet runs about $30 a month. Coworking options are thin, so plan on working from home or a café and check current listings before you count on a desk. Local salaries are well below U.S. levels, so Maribor works best when your income comes from somewhere else.
LGBTQ expats
Same-sex marriage has been legal in Slovenia since July 2022, when the Constitutional Court struck down the ban on marriage and on joint adoption. Parliament passed a law to match that October. A 2023 Eurobarometer survey put public support for same-sex marriage at 62%. Maribor is less settled on the subject than the capital: at its Pride parade in September 2023, which drew more than 300 people, there were several incidents and at least one person needed emergency care. Slovenia's president publicly condemned the attack. LGBTQ social life is mostly in Ljubljana.
Black Americans
We couldn't find an established Black American community in Maribor, or first-hand accounts specific to the city. In a mid-sized Slovenian city you're likely to stand out. Talk with Black expats already living in Slovenia, and spend time here before you sign a lease.
Limited mobility
The city has made some effort. Maister, a free electric mini-vehicle with a wheelchair ramp, carries people with limited mobility around the center, and the Slovenian National Theatre Maribor offers barrier-free access for wheelchair users. Older buildings vary a lot, so visit any apartment in person and check the elevator and your route to the nearest bus stop.
Retiring here
Maribor makes sense for active retirees who like hiking, wine and a calm city, and a couple's budget of about $2,600 a month leaves room for travel. The catch is the paperwork: Slovenia has no retirement visa, so you'll need a residence permit that fits another purpose, such as Slovene ancestry or family ties. Our retirement visa guide compares countries that do have one, and our Slovenia moving guide explains the permits.
