Plan on about $1,600 a month in U.S. dollars for one person in Sofia, with most single budgets in our data between $1,400 and $1,800. A couple needs about $2,400 and a family of four about $3,500. A one-bedroom in the center rents for around $750, or about $550 farther out. All figures are as of 2026.
Sofia is home to about 1.2 million people and sits roughly 1,840 feet up, with the trails and ski runs of Vitosha mountain at the edge of town. It suits remote workers who want a full-size city, people who like having an airport on the metro and several private hospitals to choose from, and retirees who'd trade a beach for museums and a real transit network.
It's a weaker fit if you want a quiet town, a mild winter or a ready-made English-speaking social scene. Winter days are gray and smoky from home heating, and you'll want to learn the Cyrillic alphabet in your first weeks.

Transport in Sofia
Most people in Sofia get by on the metro, trams, buses and their own feet, and plenty of residents in the central districts never own a car.
A ticket good for 30 minutes with transfers costs under $1 (€0.80, or 1.86 Bulgarian leva) as of 2026, and it covers a combined trip on the metro and surface transport. You don't need to buy paper tickets: you can tap a bank card on the validator inside the vehicle or at the metro barriers. Our data puts a monthly transport budget at about $35.
The M4 metro runs to Sofia Airport's Terminal 2, so you can land and ride into town with your bags. The system is still growing, with new stations opened on the north side in August 2026.
On cold, still winter days the air can be poor enough that it's worth checking a pollution app before a long walk or run.
A car earns its keep on weekends: ski days and hiking on Vitosha, mountain villages, and the long drive to the Black Sea coast. For daily life in the city, you can skip it.

Settling into Sofia
Expat life: Sofia has plenty of English speakers for a Balkan capital, but they're spread across the city rather than clustered in one scene. A 2026 nomad-directory review lists coworking spaces such as Trevor Workspaces and Campus X, yet says the city lacks regular nomad events; people who want that often look at the ski town of Bansko. Join the Sofia remote-worker Facebook groups and English-language event listings before you land.
Doctors and hospitals: The UK government's list of facilities with English-speaking staff includes Acibadem City Clinic University Hospital, Pirogov emergency hospital and Vita Hospital in Sofia. It was last updated in 2021 and isn't an endorsement, so confirm with each one. Have private international coverage in place before you fly.
Working remotely: Home internet runs about $15 a month in our data. Bulgaria is several hours ahead of the U.S., so morning calls back home fall in your afternoon.
Winter air: Wood and coal stoves are one of the city's main pollution sources, and about 80% of particulate exceedances come in winter, according to a 2026 IEEP study. It's improving: Sofia met the EU's annual PM10 limit for a third straight year, and burning solid fuel for heat has been banned in nine districts since January 2025, with the whole municipality scheduled to follow in January 2029. If you have asthma or a heart condition, favor apartments on district heating or gas.
LGBTQ residents: Bulgaria has no legal recognition for same-sex couples, and ILGA-Europe's 2026 review calls for it. A 2024 law bans "propaganda" of non-traditional sexual orientation in schools, a real concern for families with children. Sofia has a few gay venues and an annual Pride march, which drew a church-backed "March of the Family" counter-rally in 2026, and ILGA-Europe recorded a machete attack on a trans woman in central Sofia in 2025. Many LGBTQ foreigners live here quietly; spend time in the city and meet local LGBTQ groups before deciding.
Black Americans: We didn't find recent reporting on daily life for Black residents of Sofia specifically. In March 2024, foreign students were attacked in central Sofia, and police treated the case as attempted robbery rather than a racist attack, which worried activists. A scouting trip and conversations with Black expats already in Bulgaria will tell you more than any article.
Limited mobility: The metro's director says stations have ramps and escalators, but disability groups touring the system in June 2026 still found gaps. A wheelchair user described serious trouble getting around public transport, including the Central Railway Station. A national inspection of metro stations, traffic lights and public buildings was announced at the time. Test the route from any apartment to the nearest stop in person before you sign.
Retiring here: Sofia works for retirees who want city services and culture on a moderate budget; a meal at an inexpensive restaurant runs about $10 in our data. Expect January highs near 38F and lows near 25F, and summer highs near 82F in July and 83F in August. Bulgaria's Type D long-stay visa is one route in, our retirement visa guide compares options across countries, and our Bulgaria moving guide covers the rest of the country.

Is Sofia LGBTQ-friendly?
Partly. Sofia has a few gay venues and an annual Pride march, but Bulgaria doesn't legally recognize same-sex couples, a 2024 law bans LGBTQ "propaganda" in schools, and counter-rallies and occasional attacks have been reported. Many LGBTQ foreigners live here with a lower public profile.
Is Sofia a good place to retire?
It can be, if you like city life and can handle cold winters. Sofia has a metro to the airport, private hospitals and mountain trails at the edge of town, and January highs average near 38F. Many retirees start with Bulgaria's Type D long-stay visa.
Is Sofia safe for Americans?
Sofia scores 66 out of 100 on the safety index in our 2026 data, with a crime index of 34. Most visitors and residents go about daily life without problems, but take normal big-city care, and check air-quality readings on bad winter days.
How bad is air pollution in Sofia?
It's mostly a winter problem. A 2026 IEEP study found about 80% of particulate exceedances happen in winter, largely from wood and coal home heating. Sofia met the EU's annual PM10 limit for a third straight year, and a ban on solid-fuel heating is expanding district by district.
Do you need a car in Sofia?
No. The metro, trams and buses cover the city, a 30-minute ticket with transfers costs €0.80 as of 2026, and you can pay by tapping a bank card. A car mainly helps for weekend trips to the mountains or the Black Sea coast.
How much does it cost to live in Sofia, Bulgaria?
One person needs about $1,600 a month in Sofia as of 2026, and a couple about $2,400. Rent for a one-bedroom apartment in the center runs around $750 a month, or about $550 outside the center.
Do people speak English in Sofia?
You'll find English speakers among younger people, in offices and in the expat community, but daily life runs in Bulgarian. Street signs and menus are often in Cyrillic, so learning the alphabet before you arrive makes errands much easier.
