Plan on about $2,400 a month for one person in Miraflores, $3,400 for a couple, and $5,300 for a family of four (Expatsi estimates in U.S. dollars, updated August 2026). A central one-bedroom rents for around $1,150, with most between $850 and $1,450. Our single-person figure is $2,700 for Lisbon and $2,900 for Cascais, so Miraflores gets you newer housing for less than either.
Miraflores is a planned quarter of apartment blocks and office buildings on the hill above Algés, in the municipality of Oeiras. It grew up from the 1970s on, so most of the housing is younger than what you'll find in central Lisbon, and Parque Urbano de Miraflores gives the neighborhood a green middle with playgrounds and outdoor fitness equipment. Portuguese families and office workers live here; visitors mostly don't come.
It suits families and commuters who'd trade old-town charm for a bigger, newer apartment, and retirees who drive. It's a poor fit if you want historic streets, nightlife, or a beach at the end of the block, or if you plan to walk everywhere, since the nearest train station is down the hill in Algés.

Getting around
Transport in Miraflores
Miraflores has no train station of its own. Carris Metropolitana bus 1114 runs a loop from Algés station through Miraflores and Linda-a-Velha, and from Algés the CP Cascais line follows the river into Cais do Sodré downtown. Budget about $45 a month for transit.
Plenty of residents drive anyway. The quarter sits by the A5 motorway toward Lisbon and Cascais, and a car makes school runs and big grocery trips easier. If you'll rely on your feet, rent close to a 1114 stop: Algés station is downhill, which means the walk home is uphill.

Community & practical notes
Healthcare: The public Hospital de São Francisco Xavier, part of the Western Lisbon hospital group, is on Estrada do Forte do Alto do Duque, a short drive into Lisbon. Once you're a resident, register with the national health service (SNS), and plan on private insurance coverage too if you want faster access to specialists.
Retirement: Miraflores works for retirees who drive, want a newer building, and are happy among Portuguese neighbors. There's no English-speaking retiree circle here, so expect to build your social life in Lisbon or along the coast. The D7 visa is Portugal's route for people living on a pension or passive income; our retirement visa guide and Portugal moving guide cover the rest.
LGBTQ+ life: Same-sex marriage and adoption are legal in Portugal. Miraflores itself is apartments, offices and a park, so for bars, Pride events and community groups, people head into Lisbon.
Expats of color: We couldn't find first-hand accounts from expats of color living in Miraflores, so we can't speak to day-to-day life here. Spend a few weekdays in the area and connect with community groups in Lisbon before you sign a lease.
Limited mobility: Newer apartment blocks are more likely to have elevators than central Lisbon's older buildings, which is a point in Miraflores's favor. The catch is the terrain: the quarter sits uphill from Algés and its station. Check the specific building and the walk to the nearest bus stop before you commit.
Internet and schools: Home internet runs about $40 a month. The Instituto Español Giner de los Ríos, a Spanish-curriculum school, is next door in Cruz Quebrada-Dafundo. For English-language schooling, St. Julian's School in Carcavelos teaches a British curriculum with IB Diploma options for ages 3 to 18.

Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Is Miraflores a good place to retire?
It can be, especially if you drive. You get newer apartment buildings, an urban park, a public hospital in western Lisbon a short drive away, and costs below Lisbon's. There's no English-speaking retiree scene in Miraflores itself, so plan to find your social circle in Lisbon or on the coast. Portugal's D7 visa is the route for people living on a pension or passive income.
Is Miraflores safe?
Yes. Miraflores scores 76 out of 100 on Expatsi's safety index, a little above Lisbon's 71. It's a residential and office quarter rather than a tourist area, so ordinary suburban common sense covers most situations.
What's the weather like in Miraflores?
Mild year-round. Average highs run near 59F in January and around 82F to 83F in July and August. Most of the roughly 30 inches of yearly rain falls between October and March, and summers are close to dry.
How much does it cost to live in Miraflores, Portugal?
Expatsi estimates put a single person at $1,800 to $3,000 a month, a couple at $2,600 to $4,300, and a family of four at $4,100 to $6,500, in U.S. dollars as of August 2026. Rent is the biggest swing: a one-bedroom in the center of the quarter typically runs $850 to $1,450 a month.
Can I get by with only English in Miraflores?
For many services, yes, but Portuguese is the everyday language in local shops and on the street, since few visitors come through. Learning Portuguese will make a big difference to daily errands and to getting to know your neighbors.
Do I need a car in Miraflores?
Not strictly. Miraflores has no train station, but Carris Metropolitana bus 1114 loops between the quarter and Algés station, where Cascais line trains run into Cais do Sodré in central Lisbon. Families doing school runs and anyone who'd rather not walk uphill from Algés often find a car worth having.
Are there international schools near Miraflores?
Yes. The Instituto Español Giner de los Ríos, a Spanish-curriculum school, is in neighboring Cruz Quebrada-Dafundo. For English-language schooling, St. Julian's School in Carcavelos teaches a British curriculum with IB Diploma options for ages 3 to 18.
