Plan on about $2,000 a month in U.S. dollars for one person living in Faro, and about $3,000 for a couple. Most single budgets fall between $1,700 and $2,400. A one-bedroom apartment in the center rents for around $1,050 (typically $850 to $1,200), about $850 farther out, and a family of four should budget near $4,500. A basic restaurant meal runs about $10.

Faro is the Algarve's regional capital, and it runs on government offices, the University of the Algarve and the region's airport as much as on tourism. That gives it people and open businesses all year, which suits remote workers, semi-retirees and anyone who wants Portuguese city life with a public hospital, a train station and flights close by.

Here's the catch: Faro faces a lagoon, not the open sea. The Ria Formosa nature park, a maze of islands and channels, sits between the town and the beaches, so a swim means a bus to Praia de Faro or a ferry to the islands. If you want sand at the end of your street, look at [Lagos](/cities/portugal/lagos) or [Tavira](/cities/portugal/tavira). What you get instead is a walled old town with storks nesting on the rooftops, a marina and a compact center where most errands are a walk.

Getting around

Transport in Faro

Living in Faro without a car is realistic. The center is compact and the old town is largely closed to traffic. Próximo, the city bus company, runs the urban routes, and its line 16 connects the bus terminal with the airport in about 20 minutes before continuing out to Praia de Faro. In summer it comes about every 15 minutes during the day, dropping to every 30 minutes on weekends and in the low season, and there's no late-night service.

For longer trips, regional trains run from Faro west along the coast to Lagos and east to Vila Real de Santo António, and Intercidades and Alfa Pendular trains go to Lisbon. There's no train to Seville or anywhere else in Spain. Uber and Bolt both work here, though drivers get scarce and waits get long in peak season. A car still earns its keep for the west-coast beaches, inland villages and late nights.

Community

Community & practical notes

Healthcare: Hospital de Faro, the city's public hospital, is run by the Unidade Local de Saúde do Algarve, which since January 2024 has managed the region's former hospital group and its public health centers under one administration. On the private side, the Hospital Particular do Algarve in Gambelas offers round-the-clock urgent care for adults. Its parent group, HPA Saúde, became 75% owned by Portugal's CUF hospital network in January 2026.

Working remotely: Home internet averages about $40 a month. Coworking listings show a few spaces in town, including Faro Avenida Business Center, Alandrasquare and Ti-Co-Hub Algarfornia. You won't be stuck at the kitchen table, but Faro doesn't have a big nomad scene.

University life: The University of the Algarve, with around 8,000 students, has its Penha campus in central Faro and its Gambelas campus about 4 miles out. Students keep cafés, buses and evenings busy after the summer visitors leave.

LGBTQ+ life: Portugal legalized same-sex marriage in 2010 and opened adoption to same-sex couples in 2016. Faro's own scene is small, a few LGBTQ+-friendly bars and clubs rather than a neighborhood, and the country's big Pride parades are in Lisbon and Porto.

Limited mobility: The old town is the hard part: cobbled streets, uneven surfaces and steps up onto the walls, though main squares such as Largo da Sé are flat and the area is mostly free of cars. Every beach trip involves a bus or a ferry, so plan beach access before you count on it.

Retiring in Faro: Faro fits retirees who'd rather have a hospital, an airport and a train line close at hand than a beachfront. If you'll live on a pension, Social Security or savings, start with Portugal's D7 visa, compare it with other retirement visas, and read our guide to moving to Portugal.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

How do you get to the beach from Faro?

Faro sits on the Ria Formosa lagoon, so its beaches are on barrier islands. Praia de Faro is a short ride from the center on Próximo's line 16 bus. Ferries from Faro run to Ilha Deserta in about 35 minutes, on schedules that change with the season.

Is Faro a good place to retire?

It's a strong fit for retirees who put healthcare and travel ahead of a beachfront. Faro has a public hospital, a private hospital with 24-hour adult urgent care, the Algarve's airport and direct trains to Lisbon, and winter average highs sit around 61 to 63F. Portugal's D7 visa is the one designed for people living on passive income such as pensions.

How much does it cost to live in Faro, Portugal?

About $2,000 a month for a single person and about $3,000 for a couple, in U.S. dollars, based on Expatsi's 2026 estimates. Most single budgets fall between $1,700 and $2,400, and a family of four should plan on about $4,500. Rent is the biggest variable: a central one-bedroom runs around $1,050 a month.

Do you need a car in Faro?

Not for daily life. Faro's center is compact, Próximo city buses cover the town and run to the airport and Praia de Faro, regional trains follow the coast from Lagos to Vila Real de Santo António, and Uber and Bolt operate. A car helps for west-coast beaches, inland villages and nights out, since there's no late-night bus service.

What is healthcare like in Faro?

Faro has both public and private hospitals. Hospital de Faro is the public hospital, run since January 2024 by the Unidade Local de Saúde do Algarve, and the private Hospital Particular do Algarve in Gambelas offers round-the-clock urgent care for adults. Its parent group became majority-owned by CUF in January 2026.

Is Faro safe to live in?

Yes. Faro scores 74 out of 100 on Expatsi's safety index, with a crime index of 26 (2026 data). It's a working regional capital rather than a nightlife resort town, so normal city precautions cover most situations.

What's the weather like in Faro?

Mild and mostly dry. July and August average highs are near 84F, while January averages highs near 61F and lows near 47F. Most of the roughly 19 inches of yearly rain falls between October and March, and December is the wettest month.

Is Faro good for remote workers?

Yes, if you want a real city more than a nomad hub. Home internet costs about $40 a month, there are a few coworking spaces in town, and the airport is about 4 miles from the center by road, which makes trips back to the U.S. and around Europe easier than from smaller Algarve towns.
