Zambia's Study Permit for American students
One permit, one named school, about $460 to start. Here's the paperwork, the real cost, and the rules that catch people.
You need it for any course at a Zambian school that runs longer than three months. Your school vouches for you, and the medical exam happens in Zambia, not at home.

Who it's for
Three months is the line
Zambia's Study Permit covers full-time or part-time study at a Zambian school when the program lasts more than three months. Shorter courses fall outside it, so ask your school which status it wants you on.
For Americans, the realistic fits are a semester or a degree at the University of Zambia (UNZA), the University of Lusaka or Cavendish University, often in a graduate program like public health.

How to apply
Five steps, and one rule your school may bend
1. Get accepted
The permit names one school. That school certifies to Immigration that your fees are guaranteed and that you can support yourself in Zambia.
2. Gather the file
A covering letter to the Director General, a certified passport copy, your acceptance letter, and a sponsor letter (the school, a host, a parent, a guardian or yourself) with proof of the sponsor's status and finances. UNZA also asks applicants 18 and over who apply from abroad for a police clearance from home.
3. Do the medical in Zambia
The report has to come from a Zambian government medical facility. Cavendish says plainly that a medical from your home country won't do.
4. File and pay
Applications go through Immigration's eServices portal: K9,090 by card or K9,045 by mobile money. The University of Lusaka notes the fee is non-refundable. Some schools file for you; Cavendish requires it.
5. Renew on time
Renewal costs K12,120 and needs a letter from your school plus your latest transcript.
Here's the catch
The 2010 law says full-time students apply from outside Zambia and stay out until the permit is issued. In practice, the University of Lusaka and Cavendish describe applying after you arrive, and the medical has to be done in Zambia anyway. Follow your school's international office and get its instructions in writing. There's no official processing time; a Lusaka consultancy says several weeks, and Cavendish won't register you for classes without a valid permit.
A new immigration law is waiting in the wings
Zambia's Immigration Control Act, 2026 will replace the 2010 law on a date the minister sets. As of October 2026, we found no start date, and Immigration still lists the 2010 Act. Once it's in force, Immigration must decide study permits within 30 days, part-time and distance students get a temporary study permit, and you can add a child under seven to your permit. Permits issued before then stay valid until they expire.
What the permit does and doesn't allow
No paid work
Holders can't take a job or run a business for gain unless the permit itself allows it.
One named school
Switching schools means a variation: K9,090, a new acceptance letter and your old transcript.
Ends when you finish
Your school tells Immigration when you complete your studies and hands the permit back.
Switch without leaving
The law lets you apply from inside Zambia to change to another permit, such as employment or residence.
No citizenship clock
Only years on a residence permit count toward citizenship by registration. Student years don't.
Overstays are a crime
Staying past expiry is an offence, with fines up to K80,000 (about $4,070) or up to two years in prison.
Paying for it
Tuition is the big number, and U.S. aid is narrow
The permit is small next to tuition. UNZA charges students from outside southern Africa $7,460 to $9,310 a year for a master's and up to $11,560 for a doctorate. Part-time graduate study costs half.
Federal loans
At a foreign school you can use federal Direct Loans, never Pell Grants, and only if the school takes part in the Title IV aid programs. Search the FAFSA school list by country before you count on loans; we couldn't confirm a Zambian school on it as of October 2026. Grad PLUS closed to new borrowers on July 1, 2026.
Through a U.S. college
If your U.S. school runs or approves the program, your aid is processed by that U.S. school.

Zambia Study Permit: your questions
Can I work in Zambia on a study permit?
No. Zambian law says a study permit holder may not take a job or run any business, trade or profession for gain unless the permit itself allows it. To work, you'd need an employment permit, which you can apply to switch to from inside Zambia.
Do my children need their own permit?
Yes, if they'll study in Zambia for more than three months, since children and dependants of permit holders need their own study permits. Once Zambia's 2026 immigration law takes effect, a student can also add a child under seven to the student's own permit. We found no study-permit route for a spouse, so ask a Zambian immigration consultant about one.
Do I need a study permit to study in Zambia?
Yes, if your program at a Zambian school lasts more than three months, whether you study full time or part time. Zambia's Department of Immigration issues the Study Permit, and it names the one school you're allowed to attend.
Can Americans apply for a study permit after arriving in Zambia?
The 2010 immigration law says full-time students should apply from outside Zambia and wait there until the permit is issued. In practice, the University of Lusaka and Cavendish University describe applying after arrival, and the required medical report must come from a Zambian government facility. Follow your school's instructions and get them in writing.
Can I use U.S. federal student loans to study in Zambia?
Only if your Zambian school takes part in the U.S. Title IV aid programs, and only for federal loans, never Pell Grants. Check the FAFSA school search by country first. Grad PLUS closed to new borrowers on July 1, 2026. If your U.S. college runs or approves the program, your aid goes through that college.
How much does a Zambian study permit cost?
The first permit costs K9,090 when paid by card (about $460 as of October 2026), or K9,045 by mobile money. Each renewal costs K12,120 (about $620), and changing schools costs K9,090. The University of Lusaka notes the fee is non-refundable.
Does time on a Zambian study permit count toward citizenship?
No. Zambia's Citizenship Act counts only time spent as ordinarily resident, which it defines as holding a residence permit. Years on a study permit don't add up toward citizenship by registration.
How long does a Zambian study permit take to process?
Zambia publishes no official processing time. A Lusaka immigration consultancy says it typically takes several weeks. A new immigration law signed in 2026 sets a 30-day decision deadline, but it wasn't yet in force as of October 2026.
