The Taiwan student visa for Americans: degree programs, Mandarin school and what comes after
International tuition at National Taiwan University runs about $1,700 to $2,100 a semester, and federal student aid won't cover it.
Since January 2026, graduates of Taiwan universities can stay up to two years to look for work, no work permit needed. Getting there starts with arriving on the right visa.

About that data card
The fee line reads "$50," which is Taiwan's standard visitor visa fee. Since April 2026, U.S. passport holders pay US$185 (NT$6,105) for a resident visa. Degree students apply with an admission letter, their diploma and transcripts, proof of six months of living costs, and a health certificate issued within the last 3 months. Mandarin students file a study plan and an admission certificate from an accredited language center.

Two routes
A degree or a language school, and how you land decides it
Degree students get a resident visa before they fly. Mandarin students usually start on a visitor visa coded FR and switch to residence after four months of classes.
- Degree route: bachelor's, master's or PhD programs, with your diploma and transcripts in the file.
- Mandarin route: 15 or more class hours a week at a Ministry of Education-accredited center, with absences under a quarter of class hours.
- Visa-free won't work: the 90-day entry for Americans can't be extended or converted to student status.
- Mandarin students' total stay is generally capped at two years.

Plan on paying tuition without federal aid
We checked the Department of Education's list of foreign schools in the federal loan programs in September 2026. It has no school in Taiwan, so Direct Loans won't follow you there.
- Pell Grants never work abroad, and Grad PLUS closed to new borrowers on July 1, 2026.
- The Ministry of Education's Taiwan Scholarship covers up to NT$40,000 (about $1,330) of tuition a semester, plus a monthly stipend of NT$15,000 (about $500) for undergrads or NT$20,000 (about $670) for graduate students.
- The Huayu Enrichment Scholarship pays NT$28,000 (about $930) a month for 2 to 12 months of Mandarin study. It doesn't cover tuition.

Work and what's next
Working now, and two years to job hunt after you graduate
With a work permit, students can work up to 20 hours a week during term, and the weekly cap lifts over summer and winter breaks. Working without one risks fines of NT$30,000 to NT$150,000 and expulsion.
- Work permits go to degree students, and to language students after a one-year course.
- Since January 1, 2026, graduates with an associate degree or higher can extend their stay one year, plus a second if needed, to look for work.
- During that stay you can work without a work permit and without a minimum salary rule. 3,239 graduates had used it by the end of July 2026.
- A bachelor's or master's from a Taiwan school counts as one year toward permanent residency.
Who a student visa doesn't suit
If you want Taiwan for retirement or remote work, school is a slow detour: Mandarin students attend 15 hours of class a week and can't get a work permit until they've finished a one-year course. A spouse or kids need their own dependent resident visa. Skilled earners should look at the Employment Gold Card instead.

Taiwan student visa questions
Can I use FAFSA or federal student loans at a Taiwan university?
No. When we checked in September 2026, the Department of Education's list of foreign schools in the federal loan programs included no school in Taiwan, and Pell Grants can't be used abroad anyway. Taiwan's Ministry of Education offers the Taiwan Scholarship, which covers up to NT$40,000 of tuition a semester plus a monthly stipend.
Can international students work in Taiwan?
Yes, with a work permit. Degree students, and language students who've completed a one-year course, can apply for a permit that costs NT$100 and lasts up to a year. During term the limit is 20 hours a week; over summer and winter breaks the weekly cap is lifted within Taiwan's labor law limits. Working without a permit can mean fines of NT$30,000 to NT$150,000 and expulsion.
How long does it take to get a Taiwan student visa?
A resident visa application made inside Taiwan takes 8 work days, per Taiwan's Bureau of Consular Affairs. Processing at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Offices in the U.S. varies, so ask yours for current timing. Once you arrive, you have 30 days to apply for your Alien Resident Certificate.
Can Americans study in Taiwan without a visa?
Only for short courses. U.S. citizens can enter Taiwan visa-free for up to 90 days, but that stay can't be extended or converted to student status. For a degree or a longer Mandarin program, get a resident visa or a Mandarin study visitor visa (code FR) from a Taipei Economic and Cultural Office before you fly.
How much does a Taiwan student visa cost for U.S. citizens?
Since April 7, 2026, U.S. passport holders pay US$185 (NT$6,105) for a general-purpose Taiwan visa, and expedited processing adds 50%. After arrival, the Alien Resident Certificate costs NT$1,000 (about $33) a year.
Do international students in Taiwan get national health insurance?
Yes, after six months of residence. Students then pay a premium of NT$826 (about $28) a month. One trip out of Taiwan of fewer than 30 days doesn't reset the six-month count, so plan your own coverage for the first months.
How do I get a resident visa to study Mandarin in Taiwan?
Enter on a visitor visa for Mandarin study (code FR) and enroll at a Ministry of Education-accredited language center for at least 15 hours a week. After four months, you can switch to a resident visa if you're registered for at least three more months and haven't missed more than a quarter of your class hours. A Mandarin student's total stay is generally capped at two years.
Can I stay in Taiwan after graduating?
Yes. Since January 1, 2026, foreign graduates of Taiwan universities with an associate degree or higher can extend their residence for a year, plus a second year if needed, to look for work. During that time they can work without a work permit and without a minimum salary requirement, and family members can apply to stay too.
