Getting a Swedish work permit, from job offer to residence card
Since June 2026 the job has to pay at least SEK 34,470 a month, about $3,495, and your employer starts the paperwork.
What happens after a Swedish company says yes: who files what, what it costs, how long you'll wait, and how a two-year permit turns into permanent residence.

Who it's for
A permit that belongs to your job offer
Sweden's work permit is for people a Swedish employer wants to hire. You need a signed contract, pay that clears the salary floor and matches the collective agreement for the work, and employer-paid health, life, work-injury and pension insurance.
It suits skilled Americans in fields like IT, engineering and healthcare. It doesn't suit remote workers or retirees, and you can't combine two jobs to reach the salary floor.
Your permit is tied to one employer
The permit covers the employer and job named in your decision. A new employer, a new profession or completely new duties means a new application. Report every change in your job: skipping it can get your permit withdrawn or your extension refused.
How it works
Four steps from offer letter to arrival
1. The employer advertises
Before hiring you, the employer posts the job for at least ten days on the Swedish Public Employment Service portal, which also shows it on the EU-wide EURES site, and lets the relevant union comment on the terms. Transfers within a company group skip the ad.
2. The employer files, then you do
Your employer starts the application in the Swedish Migration Agency's e-service. You complete your part and pay SEK 2,200 (about $223). First-time applicants must apply from outside Sweden, and you can't start work until the permit is granted. If the job lasts a year or less, you also need comprehensive health insurance.
3. The wait
For highly qualified jobs, 75% of recent complete cases were decided within a month; for other jobs, within four months. Since June 2026, the agency can also refuse a permit over problems with the employer, such as crimes or sanctions.
4. Arrival paperwork
Americans don't need an entry visa, so you can give fingerprints and a photo after you arrive. The residence permit card can take up to four weeks. If you'll stay a year or more, register with the Swedish Tax Agency, showing your residence permit, to get your personal identity number.

Money left after rent
SEK 10,314 a month for a couple (about $1,046), plus SEK 3,336 to 5,339 per child by age.
Other ways in
When the Blue Card or a lower salary floor fits better
The EU Blue Card
If your offer pays at least SEK 53,625 a month (about $5,437, as of July 2026) and you have a degree of 180 credits or five years of relevant experience, look at the Blue Card. It needs a job of at least six months and costs SEK 2,000, and a first card can run up to four years instead of two.
The 75% salary floor
Some hires need only SEK 28,725 a month (about $2,912): staff at tech or life science start-ups under five years old with fewer than 100 employees, foreign-trained doctors, dentists and nurses getting Swedish certification, people switching from a student or researcher permit, and listed jobs such as IT specialists and welders.
No offer yet?
With a master's degree or higher, you can get up to nine months in Sweden to job-hunt, showing SEK 13,000 (about $1,318) for each month. If you're hired, you can apply for the work permit without leaving.
What the paycheck looks like after tax
Swedish municipal tax averages 32% in 2026, and a 20% state tax applies to taxable income above SEK 643,000 a year (about $65,194). Recruited experts earning more than SEK 88,800 a month (about $9,004) can apply to have 25% of their pay exempt for seven years, but the application is due within three months of starting work. On the U.S. side, you still file a return; the 2026 foreign earned income exclusion covers up to $132,900 of wages. Dollar figures on this page use September 2026 rates.

The long game
From a two-year permit to a Swedish passport
Apply to extend no more than two months before your permit expires; apply late and you can't work while you wait. After working four of the past seven years on a work permit, you can apply for permanent residence if you support yourself (in 2026, SEK 6,243 a month left after housing for a single adult) and keep a clean record. Even minor offenses can count against you.
Citizenship now takes eight years for most people, up from five, with income of about SEK 20,000 a month before tax and a test on Swedish society that began in August 2026. Sweden has allowed dual citizenship since 2001.
Sweden work permit questions
Can I apply for a Swedish work permit while visiting Sweden as a tourist?
No. Sweden doesn't accept work permit applications from people who came as tourists or to visit friends or family, even with a job offer in hand. First-time applicants apply from outside Sweden. The exceptions are narrow: people who traveled specifically to meet an employer with an urgent need for them, and people on the nine-month job-seeker permit for master's graduates.
How much do I need to earn for a Swedish work permit in 2026?
For applications submitted from June 16, 2026, the salary must be at least SEK 34,470 a month before tax, about $3,495 at September 2026 exchange rates. That's 90% of Sweden's median salary of SEK 38,300, and the pay must also match the collective agreement or what's normal for the job. Some groups, such as staff at young tech start-ups and listed jobs like IT specialists, need only SEK 28,725.
How long is a Swedish work permit valid?
A first work permit is granted for up to two years and never longer than your employment contract. You can apply to extend it no more than two months before it expires. After working four of the past seven years on a work permit, you can apply for permanent residence.
Did the June 2026 rules change anything for people who already have a Swedish work permit?
If your permit was granted under the old rules and you apply to extend it between June 1 and December 1, 2026, you don't need to meet the new salary requirement. Anyone applying for a first work permit since June 1, 2026 has to meet the new level of 90% of the median salary.
What happens if I lose my job in Sweden on a work permit?
You can stay in Sweden for three months after your last day of work to look for a new job, as long as your permit is still valid. A new employer means a new work permit application, and not reporting a change in your employment can get your permit withdrawn or an extension refused.
Can my spouse work in Sweden if I have a work permit?
Yes. A spouse, registered partner or cohabiting partner who gets a residence permit as your family member can work in Sweden for as long as that permit is valid. Adults pay SEK 1,500 to apply and children SEK 750, and you need to show enough income left after rent to support them.
How long does a Swedish work permit take?
According to the Swedish Migration Agency, 75% of recent complete applications for highly qualified jobs were decided within one month, and 75% for other jobs within four months. After approval, Americans can give fingerprints and a photo in Sweden, and the residence permit card can take up to four weeks.
Do Americans pay U.S. taxes on a Swedish salary?
Yes. The U.S. taxes its citizens wherever they live, so you keep filing a U.S. return. For tax year 2026, the foreign earned income exclusion can cover up to $132,900 of foreign wages. As an employee in Sweden, the U.S.-Sweden Social Security agreement means you normally pay social security taxes only to Sweden.
