Sweden's student residence permit for Americans, under the stricter June 2026 rules

Americans pay SEK 80,000 to 295,000 a year in tuition (about $8,050 to $29,700) and must show SEK 10,656 a month to live on. Keep passing courses, and you can stay up to a year after graduating to find a job.

This permit is for full-time bachelor's and master's students with an admission letter and a way to pay. It isn't a back door for remote workers or retirees: study has to be the reason you're there, and since June 2026 the Migration Agency checks that you're earning credits.

About that data card

Our card says "30 days" to process. The Swedish Migration Agency's own figure is slower: 75% of recent cases were decided within 3 months. The real requirements: you're finally admitted to full-time study, you've paid your tuition, you show SEK 10,656 a month for 2026, and your passport covers the permit period. Comprehensive health insurance is only required if your studies last under a year.

Step by step

From admission letter to residence permit card

It all runs in a fixed order, and the permit has to be issued before you enter Sweden. Here's the sequence for an autumn 2027 start.

  • Apply through University Admissions between October 16, 2026 and January 15, 2027. The SEK 900 fee (about $90) must arrive by the deadline.
  • Results come out April 1, 2027 for master's programs and April 8 for bachelor's.
  • Pay your first tuition installment. The Migration Agency won't process your permit until it's paid.
  • Apply online for the permit (SEK 1,500, about $150) and show at least SEK 10,656 a month to live on.
  • When the agency asks, give fingerprints and a photo. The Embassy of Sweden in Washington, DC, holds drop-in biometrics on Fridays from 9 to 10 a.m.
  • Studying under a year? Buy comprehensive health insurance. A year or more means registering with the Tax Agency for a personal identity number, which is your way into public healthcare.
  • Report your address to the Migration Agency within 30 days of arriving.

How U.S. aid works at Swedish schools

Federal loans only follow you to schools that take part, and Pell Grants never do. Check each school's aid page, like Lund's or Uppsala's, before you rank your choices.

  • Lund University's U.S. loans page lists Direct Unsubsidized Loans for undergraduate and graduate students, under federal school code G10067.
  • Uppsala University left the program. Students admitted from autumn 2023 on can't use U.S. loans there.
  • The Education Department's foreign-school list shows KTH, Karolinska Institutet, Jönköping University and Malmö University as "Deferment Only," which means no new loans.
  • Grad PLUS closed to new borrowers on July 1, 2026. New graduate borrowers can take up to $20,500 a year in Direct Unsubsidized Loans, capped at $100,000 overall.

The rules since June 11, 2026

37.5 credits in year one

That's what you need to extend. From year two, it's 45 credits a year.

The cap during semesters. June, July and August have no limit, and some jobs at your university are exempt.

Your address within 30 days

Tell the Migration Agency where you live, and update it whenever you move.

Two semesters before switching

As a general rule, you must finish at least two semesters of study before changing to another permit from Sweden.

It's the decision date that counts

Applied before June 11 but decided on or after it? The new rules apply. Permits granted earlier are exempt.

Family permits depend on yours

A family member's permit can be revoked if your permit is revoked.

After graduation

Staying on once you have the degree

Finish the program you were admitted to, at least two semesters long, and you can apply for up to a year to look for work. File before your study permit expires and show the same SEK 10,656 a month.

  • A job paying at least SEK 34,470 a month (about $3,470), 90% of Sweden's median salary, lets you switch to a work permit without leaving.
  • Permanent residence through work takes four of the past seven years on a work permit.
  • Citizenship now takes eight years of residence for most people, and Swedish language and civics knowledge is mandatory from ages 16 to 66. Sweden allows dual citizenship.

Bringing a partner or kids

Spouses, cohabiting or registered partners, and unmarried children under 18 can join you. Add SEK 4,440 a month (about $450) per partner and SEK 2,664 (about $270) per child to the money you show, plus SEK 1,500 per adult and SEK 750 per child in fees. From October 1, 2026, a family member staying a year or less needs comprehensive health insurance.

Studying in Sweden: questions from Americans

How long does a Swedish student residence permit take?

The Swedish Migration Agency decided 75% of recent cases within 3 months. The permit must be issued before you enter Sweden, so apply as soon as you've paid tuition. For autumn 2027, master's admission results come out April 1, 2027, which leaves roughly four months before the semester.

Can international students work in Sweden?

Yes, with limits. For permits decided on or after June 11, 2026, you can work up to 15 hours a week during semesters and without limits in June, July and August. Some work at your own university, like teaching or research, is exempt from the cap.

Can I keep my U.S. citizenship if I become Swedish?

Sweden allows dual citizenship, so Swedish law won't make you give up your U.S. passport. Getting there takes time: since June 6, 2026, most people need eight years of residence, and applicants aged 16 to 66 must show Swedish language skills and knowledge of Swedish society.

How much money do I need to show for a Swedish student residence permit?

For 2026 applications, at least SEK 10,656 a month (about $1,070) for yourself. Add SEK 4,440 a month for a spouse or partner and SEK 2,664 per child if they come with you. The permit fee is SEK 1,500 per adult (about $150) and SEK 750 per child.

Can my spouse and children come with me to Sweden?

Yes. Spouses, cohabiting partners, registered partners and unmarried children under 18 can get permits based on yours. You'll show extra money for each of them, and from October 1, 2026, family members staying a year or less need comprehensive health insurance. Their permits can be revoked if yours is.

Can I stay in Sweden after I graduate?

Yes, if you finish the full program you were admitted to and it lasted at least two semesters. You can apply for a permit of up to one year to look for work, before your study permit expires. A job paying at least SEK 34,470 a month (about $3,470) lets you switch to a work permit from inside Sweden.

Do Americans pay tuition at Swedish universities?

Yes. Citizens of countries outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland pay both application and tuition fees. A year of tuition runs from SEK 80,000 to SEK 295,000 (about $8,050 to $29,700), and the average is about SEK 129,000 (about $13,000). The Swedish Migration Agency won't process your residence permit until you've paid the first installment.

Can I use U.S. federal student loans to study in Sweden?

Only at a school that takes part, and Pell Grants never apply at foreign schools. Lund University lists Direct Unsubsidized Loans under federal school code G10067. Uppsala University stopped for students admitted from autumn 2023, and the Education Department lists KTH, Karolinska Institutet, Jönköping and Malmö as deferment only. Grad PLUS closed to new borrowers on July 1, 2026.
