Saint Vincent's work permit covers six months on its own. Longer means a residence permit too.
Both go to the Prime Minister's Office in Kingstown. The work permit application is EC$150 (about $56), and the office says decisions average six to eight weeks.
This permit is for Americans hired by a Vincentian employer or running a business registered in the country. U.S. citizens get six months on arrival as visitors, but taking up a job needs permission first, so the permit comes before the first paycheck.

Two ways to qualify: a local job or your own company
The Prime Minister's Office says you need a prospective employer or proof that you're self-employed. That's the whole eligibility test on paper. There's no salary floor or degree rule in the published checklist, but the employer has to show it advertised the job.
If your money comes from a pension, savings or a U.S. paycheck, this is the wrong tool. The published rules don't address remote work for a U.S. employer, so get a written answer from the Prime Minister's Office or a local attorney before you count on it.
- Fits: you have an offer from a business in Saint Vincent
- Fits: you've registered your own company there (registration takes about two business days, per the State Department)
- No permit needed: medical students on an elective at Milton Cato Memorial Hospital
- Doesn't fit: retirees and people living on outside income
Work Permit
Foreigners who want to work for a local employer or run their own business need a work permit from the Prime Minister's Office. A work permit alone covers up to six months, so anyone staying longer must also apply for a residence permit. Self-employed applicants can apply with proof of their business registration.
- Processing time
- ~49 days
- Timeline
- Work permit alone up to 6 months; longer stays require a residence permit alongside it, renewed annually
- Difficulty
- Moderate
Key requirements
- Letter from a prospective employer, or proof of self-employment such as a company registration or incorporation certificate
- Proof that the position was advertised locally
- Police record and certified copy of passport
- Non-refundable EC$150 (about $56) application fee, with a further permit fee on approval
- Residence permit application as well if you will stay more than 6 months

What goes in the file
For the work permit, the office's current checklist asks for the application form, a letter from your employer, a certified copy of your passport's information page, proof the job was advertised, a police record, and the EC$150 fee. Self-employed applicants show their company's certificate of registration or incorporation instead of an employer letter.
Your employer fills in its own section of the form: how many locals and foreigners it employs, where it advertised the job (locally, abroad, or through the Labour Department), and what training it offers Vincentians.
Staying past six months
The residence permit adds a police certificate from wherever you've lived for more than six months, two certified photos, a medical certificate, and a recent bank statement. Instead of the statement, your employer can send a letter accepting financial responsibility for you. Cabinet approves residence files, so order your FBI background check early.

EC$75
Visitor extension, per month

Ask for the fee list in writing
The office's current fee schedule is a scanned PDF we couldn't read in October 2026. The annual figures above come from the London High Commission's 2010 sheet, and the application fee has since risen from EC$125 to EC$150, so expect others to have moved too. On that older list, one person staying past six months paid about EC$3,875 (about $1,435) in year one. We couldn't find what a spouse pays.
Local pay, payroll deductions and two tax systems
What jobs pay
The minimum wage has been EC$50 a day since March 2024, at least EC$1,000 a month (about $370). The World Bank put unemployment at 19% in 2022, which is why employers have to show they looked locally first. Most Americans who make this work bring a skill the island is short on.
Deductions
National Insurance takes 6.5% of pay from employees in 2026, with employers paying 7.5%. Those rise to 7% and 8% on January 1, 2027.
Income tax under the 2024 tables starts after a EC$25,000 (about $9,260) standard deduction: 10% on the first EC$5,000 of chargeable income, 20% to EC$10,000, and 28% above that.
The U.S. side
You still file a U.S. return on worldwide income. The foreign earned income exclusion shelters up to $132,900 of 2026 wages if you meet the IRS tests. The U.S. has no Social Security agreement with Saint Vincent, so the two pension systems don't coordinate.
From arrival to a long-term stay
1. Arrive as a visitor
U.S. citizens get six months on arrival. You can rent and set up, but not start work.
2. File in Kingstown
Submit the work permit, plus a residence permit if you'll stay longer than six months, to the Prime Minister's Office.
3. Wait about six to eight weeks
Pay the permit fee once approved. Extend your visitor stay at EC$75 a month if the decision runs long.
4. Renew every year
Seven or more consecutive years of temporary residence opens permanent residence and citizenship by registration.
Family, the long game, and who should think twice
The application form asks whether a spouse or children will join you, but we couldn't find published rules on what they file or whether a spouse may work. Ask the office before you plan around a second income.
The long game is real. After seven or more consecutive years of temporary residence you can apply for permanent residence, or register as a citizen. Citizenship costs EC$150 to apply plus EC$1,500 or EC$2,200 on approval, takes six months to over a year, and Saint Vincent allows dual nationality, so you keep your U.S. passport.
Two limits to weigh first. The State Department says medical facilities don't meet U.S. standards, and same-sex activity is still illegal, with up to 10 years in prison. Hurricane season runs from mid-May through November.
- Teachers of math, English, business and science were exempt from permit fees on the 2010 list; confirm it still applies
- Holders of an Alien's Land-Holding Licence skip annual residence fees and can apply for permanent residence

Saint Vincent work permit questions
How long does a Saint Vincent work permit take?
The Prime Minister's Office says residence and work permit applications take six to eight weeks on average. U.S. citizens can extend a visitor stay at EC$75 (about $28) a month while they wait.
How long is a Saint Vincent work permit valid?
A work permit on its own is issued once, for no more than six months. To work longer, you apply for a residence permit at the same time, and older government guidance says permits are renewed every year.
Does the employer have to advertise the job in Saint Vincent first?
Yes. The Prime Minister's Office asks for proof that the position was advertised, and the employer's section of the form asks where it advertised, whether it used the Labour Department, and what training it offers Vincentians.
Can I work in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines as a tourist?
No. U.S. citizens are admitted as visitors for six months, but the Ministry of National Security says non-nationals must get permission before taking up residence and employment. That permission is a work permit from the Prime Minister's Office in Kingstown.
Can I get a work permit to run my own business in Saint Vincent?
Yes. Self-employed applicants qualify by showing their company's certificate of registration or incorporation. The State Department says registering a business there takes about two business days.
Can a Saint Vincent work permit lead to citizenship?
It can, slowly. Seven or more consecutive years of temporary residence makes you eligible for permanent residence or citizenship by registration. Saint Vincent allows dual nationality, so Americans can keep U.S. citizenship.
Do I still pay U.S. taxes if I work in Saint Vincent?
You still file a U.S. return, because U.S. citizens are taxed on worldwide income. For 2026 the foreign earned income exclusion can shelter up to $132,900 of foreign wages if you meet the IRS tests, and Saint Vincent taxes income separately.
How much does a Saint Vincent work permit cost?
The application fee is EC$150 (about $56), and it's non-refundable. A further permit fee is due once you're approved. The most recent schedule we could read, from 2010, set the annual permit at EC$1,800 (about $667) for non-CARICOM nationals, so ask the office for today's figure.
