Saint Lucia work permit: what Americans pay and how to get one
Your employer files, proves no local could fill the job, and you pay a fee for every year you want. Here's the cost, the paperwork and the long-term catch.
Americans can visit for 42 days without a visa, but any paid work, even for your own business, needs a permit from the Department of Labour. It's issued year by year, so you renew and pay again every year you stay.

Work Permit
Anyone from outside the Eastern Caribbean who wants to work or run a business in Saint Lucia needs a work permit from the Department of Labour. It is tied to one employer, lasts up to one year and must be renewed annually. Self-employed people and investors can apply on their own behalf.
- Timeline
- Up to 1 year, renewable annually; not transferable between employers
- Difficulty
- Moderate
Key requirements
- Job offer letter from a Saint Lucian employer, or proof of self-employment or investment (trade license or certificate of incorporation)
- Employer must show the steps taken to recruit a Saint Lucian national, including copies of job advertisements
- Police record from the country where you last lived
- Certified copies of qualifications and certified passport bio page and photos
- Tax account number and a certificate of good standing from the Registry of Companies
- Non-refundable EC$100 (about $37) application fee, then the annual permit fee on approval

How it works
Your employer does most of the work
The employer advertises the job locally first and shows the Labour Department that no suitable Saint Lucian or CARICOM national is available.
Self-employed? You apply yourself with a trade license and a business plan showing what your business adds to the local economy. Either way, the Minister can approve with conditions or refuse.

Which yearly fee is current?
The government's fee sheet lists EC$5,000 a year for foreign nationals, but it's undated, and two guides published in 2026 quote EC$7,500 (about $2,780). Budget for the higher figure and confirm with the Work Permit Unit at 468-2707 before you sign a contract.
Step by step
From job offer to permit in hand
You can't start work until the permit is approved. Getting residence later won't get you out of it: the government says residents still apply the usual way.
- Your employer advertises the job locally and keeps copies of the ads.
- Pay the EC$100 fee at the Government Treasury in Castries to get the application form.
- Gather a police record from your last country of residence, certified copies of your qualifications, evidence of income tax payment, and a trade license if you're self-employed.
- File at least two months before your planned start date.
- Once approved, pay the yearly fee and collect your permit. Then do it again next year.
Money matters once you're on the payroll
Saint Lucia income tax
Residents pay 10% to 30% on income from all sources, and perks like employer housing count as income. Non-residents pay a flat 30%.
National Insurance
You and your employer each pay 5% on earnings up to EC$5,000 (about $1,850) a month. Foreign workers pay it too.
U.S. taxes still apply
The IRS taxes citizens on worldwide income. The foreign earned income exclusion needs 330 full days abroad in 12 months, or bona fide residence.
No Social Security deal
Saint Lucia isn't one of the countries with a U.S. totalization agreement, so National Insurance payments don't count toward U.S. Social Security.
Healthcare costs money
Medical care isn't free, and the main facilities are in Castries, Gros Islet and Vieux Fort. Plan on private coverage.
Local pay runs low
Minimum wage is EC$6.52 an hour (about $2.41), set in October 2024. Negotiate a salary that also covers insurance and trips home.
Is it right for you?
Who this permit suits
It fits if
You have an offer from a Saint Lucian employer, or you're opening a business there and can show it helps the local economy.
It's a stretch if
You work remotely for a U.S. company. The permit is built for work done for the Saint Lucian economy, so ask the Work Permit Unit before relying on a visitor stay.
Here's the catch
Naturalization takes seven years of residence and, under the Citizenship Act, means renouncing your original citizenship unless you're Irish. Citizenship by Investment is the faster alternative, starting at a US$240,000 donation plus government fees.
Help with the parts around the permit
The permit covers your right to work. Health coverage and U.S. tax filing are on you, and these partners handle both.

Saint Lucia work permit questions
Can my spouse work in Saint Lucia if I have a work permit?
Only with their own work permit or an exemption, because every foreign national needs one to work there. We couldn't find official rules for dependents, so ask the Work Permit Unit before you move.
Do Americans need a visa to visit Saint Lucia?
No. U.S. citizens can stay up to 42 days without a visa, with a passport valid for the whole stay. A visit doesn't let you work, though: paid work needs a work permit from the Department of Labour.
Does a Saint Lucia work permit lead to citizenship?
Not easily for Americans. Naturalization needs seven years of residence, and ordinary naturalization requires renouncing your original citizenship unless you're Irish. Citizenship by Investment, starting at a US$240,000 donation, is the separate, faster route.
Do I pay tax in Saint Lucia on a work permit?
Yes. Residents pay income tax of 10% to 30% on income from all sources, non-residents pay a flat 30%, and you and your employer each pay 5% National Insurance on earnings up to EC$5,000 a month. As a U.S. citizen you're also still taxed by the IRS on worldwide income.
How much does a Saint Lucia work permit cost?
You pay a non-refundable EC$100 (about $37) fee for the application form, then a yearly permit fee. The government's fee sheet lists EC$5,000 (about $1,850) a year for foreign nationals, including Americans, while guides published in 2026 quote EC$7,500 (about $2,780). Confirm the current figure with the Work Permit Unit before you budget.
What happens if I work in Saint Lucia without a permit?
Working without a permit breaks Section 317 of the Labour Act and can bring a fine or imprisonment on summary conviction.
Can I get a Saint Lucia work permit without a job offer?
Yes, if you'll be self-employed or running your own business there. You apply on your own behalf with a trade license or company documents and a business plan showing how the business helps the local economy.
How long does it take to get a Saint Lucia work permit?
The government asks you to apply at least two months before your start date. A local business guide puts processing at about 4 to 6 weeks once the file is complete.
