Qatar student visa: how Americans study in Doha on a school-sponsored permit

Your university files the visa and the residence permit. You bring the admission letter, a financial sponsor, a clean medical and a tuition plan, with costs running from about $300 a credit hour to $74,520 a year.

Admission comes first and the visa follows it. Qatar Tourism puts the student visa itself at about 72 hours once your school files. The slower parts are proving the money before you fly and finishing the medical, fingerprints and Qatar ID after you land.

Where Americans enroll

Education City or Qatar University: pick the school and the sponsor comes with it

Education City, the Qatar Foundation campus in Doha, holds eight universities: branches of Carnegie Mellon, Georgetown, Northwestern, Texas A&M, VCUarts and Weill Cornell, plus HEC Paris and Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU). Texas A&M at Qatar bills students on Qatar Foundation-sponsored visas at its non-resident rate.

Qatar University, the national university, sponsors its own students. Its checklist is the most detailed we found, so the steps below follow it. Other schools ask for similar papers, so confirm yours.

Four steps from admission letter to Qatar ID

Get admitted

The school sponsors you only after it accepts you. Keep your passport valid at least a year for QU, and six months past graduation.

Prove the money

QU wants a third-party sponsor, never you: a QR 20,000 Qatari bank guarantee (about $5,470), or six months of the sponsor's statements if they live abroad.

Clear your record

Send a police clearance certificate from your country of residence and a doctor-signed health evaluation form with the visa request.

Finish in Qatar

Your sponsor has 30 days from your entry to start residence procedures: medical exam (QR 100), fingerprints and a Qatar ID card (QR 100).

Read the travel advisory before you pay a deposit

As of August 28, 2026, the State Department rates Qatar Level 3: Reconsider Travel. It cites the U.S.-Iran hostilities that began February 28, 2026, the threat of drone and missile attacks, and disrupted commercial flights. The same update let families of U.S. government staff rejoin them. Ask your school how it handles classes and flights if things flare up.

Your federal aid depends on which campus you pick

Georgetown in Qatar runs aid through Georgetown's own school code, 001445. U.S. citizens can file the FAFSA for federal Direct (Stafford) loans, and students with exceptional need may qualify for a Pell Grant. At schools on the Education Department's foreign-school list, Americans can borrow federal loans but get no Pell or other federal grants. Check your school's status before you count on either.

Grad students have less room. Grad PLUS closed to new borrowers on July 1, 2026, and new graduate borrowers outside professional programs now top out at $20,500 a year and $100,000 total.

The good news is Qatar's own money. Qatar Foundation lends Education City undergraduates interest-free, with an option to repay by working for an approved employer in Qatar. CMU-Q's Qatar Foundation grant is open to every nationality and doesn't get repaid.

Living on the permit

What a student permit allows, and where it stops

Family stays home

The permit covers you alone. Qatar University says a student can't sponsor a spouse or children. The reverse can work: a parent working in Qatar who meets the family salary rule can sponsor children up to age 25.

Work is on campus

Georgetown in Qatar, UDST and Qatar University run student employment programs. We couldn't confirm any off-campus route, so don't budget on one.

Time away

You can be outside Qatar up to 180 days in a row. Past that, you need an entry permit before day 360 or before the permit expires.

After graduation

At QU, you move the permit to an employer or family sponsor within two months of finals, or cancel it and leave within five days of your graduation statement. If you stay to work, Qatar doesn't tax salaries, but the IRS still wants a return on your worldwide income. Permanent residency takes 20 years for people born abroad, so treat Qatar as a degree, not a place to settle.

Not a fit if

You need to bring a spouse, you'd rely on off-campus income, or a health condition could fail the residence medical. A 2016 report said newcomers testing positive for HIV, tuberculosis or hepatitis B or C are refused residence, and kidney disease was added that year.

Qatar student visa: questions from Americans

Is it safe to study in Qatar in 2026?

The State Department rated Qatar Level 3: Reconsider Travel on August 28, 2026, citing the U.S.-Iran hostilities that began in February 2026, the threat of drone and missile attacks, and disrupted commercial flights. The same update allowed families of U.S. government staff back. Check the current advisory before you commit to a semester.

Can I work while studying in Qatar on a student visa?

On campus, yes, at schools with student employment programs, including Georgetown in Qatar, UDST and Qatar University. Georgetown in Qatar caps it at 20 hours a week during term and says pay typically runs QR 55 to 60 an hour, about $15 to $16. We couldn't confirm an off-campus option.

What happens to my Qatar student residence permit after I graduate?

At Qatar University, you either move the permit to an employer or family sponsor, with documents due within a month of final exams and the transfer done within two months, or cancel it and leave within five days of receiving your graduation statement. Other schools may set their own timelines.

Can I use FAFSA and federal student loans to study in Qatar?

Sometimes. Georgetown University in Qatar uses Georgetown's school code, 001445, for federal Direct (Stafford) loans, and students with exceptional need may get a Pell Grant. At eligible foreign schools, Americans can borrow federal loans but get no Pell or other federal grants. Grad PLUS closed to new borrowers on July 1, 2026.

Can Americans get a student visa to study in Qatar?

Yes. Once a Qatari university or an Education City campus admits you, the school sponsors your student visa and then your residence permit. Qatar Tourism says the visa itself typically takes about 72 hours once filed. After you land, you finish a medical exam, fingerprints and a Qatar ID card.

Can my spouse or children come with me on a Qatar student visa?

No. Qatar University says the student visa covers the student only and can't be used to sponsor family members. The reverse can work: a parent working in Qatar who earns at least QR 10,000 a month (about $2,740), or QR 6,000 with employer housing in the private sector, can sponsor children up to age 25.

How long can I stay outside Qatar with a student residence permit?

Up to 180 days in a row while your permit is valid. For a longer absence, you need an entry permit before day 360 or before the permit expires, whichever comes first. Plan long summers in the U.S. around that limit.

How much money do I need to show for a Qatar student visa?

It depends on the school. Qatar University asks a third-party financial sponsor, not the student, for a QR 20,000 guarantee from a Qatari bank (about $5,470), or six months of bank statements if the sponsor lives outside Qatar. The guarantee must stay valid five years for bachelor's and PhD students and three years for master's students.
