Pakistan Study Visa: admission first, then a security check
A two-year visa for Americans admitted to a Pakistani university or medical school. Here's the order things happen in, what it costs, and who can skip the visa entirely.
The visa is a small line item: Pakistan's consulate in Chicago lists $120 for a multiple-entry visa of over a year. Tuition is the number to plan around, from $5,400 a year for international undergraduates at NUST to $39,000 a year in tuition for foreign nationals at Aga Khan University's medical school.

Before you apply
Who this visa is for, and who can skip it
This visa is for Americans admitted to a Pakistani university, college or medical school. The admission letter comes first; nothing moves without it. Since the 2021-22 session, foreigners apply for MBBS, BDS, Pharm-D and BSc Engineering programs directly with the university or college.
Pakistani roots? Check this first
If you're a dual U.S.-Pakistani national with a valid NICOP or Pakistan Origin Card (POC), the State Department says you don't need a visa at all. A POC is open to people with a Pakistani parent or grandparent and lets you stay indefinitely without reporting to the police. This can be simpler than renewing a study visa every year.

The process
From admission letter to visa, in order
- Get admitted. Apply to the university directly and get a letter confirming your place.
- Your school loops in HEC. The university sends a copy to the Higher Education Commission, which endorses it to the Ministry of Interior. Your no-objection certificate (NOC) comes from HEC or the ministry that oversees your field, such as Health or Education.
- Apply. File on the Pakistan Online Visa System with your passport, photo, admission letter and NOC, and pay by Visa or Mastercard. Some universities still describe the older route through a Pakistani consulate. Your passport needs six months of validity past arrival and two blank pages.
- Wait for security clearance. The immigration directorate gives security agencies 30 days, and NADRA quotes two working weeks for processing. Plan on about a month.
- Answer fast if it bounces. An application sent back for review is canceled if you don't resubmit within seven days.
The immigration directorate also lists an NOC from the student's home country. We couldn't find how that applies to Americans, so ask your school's international office before you file. Applying from outside the U.S.? You'll also need proof of legal residence where you live.
Paying for it from the U.S.
Check the federal school list first
Federal Direct Loans only work at foreign schools that take part in U.S. aid, and you have to be enrolled at least half-time. Search the federal school search tool by foreign country. We couldn't confirm a Pakistani school on it as of September 2026.
No Pell Grants abroad
Students at foreign schools can't get Pell or any other federal grant, so plan around savings, loans or scholarships.
Grad PLUS is closed
Grad PLUS stopped taking new borrowers on July 1, 2026. New graduate borrowers can take up to $20,500 a year in Direct Unsubsidized Loans, $100,000 in total, at participating schools.
Living costs are modest
LUMS estimated about PKR 145,000 ($909) for housing and food over a five-month semester in 2022. NUST guarantees hostel housing for international students.
Once you're there
Renewals, trips home and overstays
Renewing
You renew inside Pakistan, and you have to be living there on a valid visa to apply. Extensions are granted a year at a time with one re-entry, and each one goes back through security clearance. NADRA quotes two working weeks for an extension, and the Passport Office grants it.
Trips home
One re-entry per extension is tight if you want to fly home for both summer and winter break. Ask your school how students handle it before you book.
Overstays
The immigration directorate doesn't waive overstay charges: $50 for two weeks to a month, $200 for one to three months, and $400 a year beyond that. The State Department adds that overstays can mean detention, arrest or prison.
Family
A spouse or children can come along if you show a sponsorship letter or bank statement. We couldn't confirm whether they can work.
Check the travel advisory before you pick a school
As of June 2026, the State Department rates Pakistan Level 3, Reconsider Travel. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (including former FATA), Balochistan and the area near the Line of Control are Level 4, Do Not Travel, and U.S. government staff need special permission to go to most areas outside Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi. Where your school sits matters.

Pakistan study visa questions
Do Americans need a visa to study in Pakistan?
Yes, unless they hold a valid NICOP or Pakistan Origin Card. The State Department says U.S. citizens need a valid visa before traveling to Pakistan, and that dual U.S.-Pakistani nationals with a valid NICOP or POC don't need one. Everyone else enrolling at a Pakistani university needs a study visa.
Is it safe for Americans to study in Pakistan?
The State Department rates Pakistan Level 3, Reconsider Travel, as of June 2026. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan and the area near the Line of Control are Level 4, Do Not Travel, and U.S. government staff need special permission to visit most areas outside Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi.
Can I use U.S. federal student loans to study in Pakistan?
Only at a school that participates in U.S. federal student aid, and only if you're enrolled at least half-time. Check by searching the federal school search tool by foreign country. Pell Grants aren't available at foreign schools, and Grad PLUS closed to new borrowers on July 1, 2026.
How much does a Pakistan study visa cost for U.S. citizens?
Pakistan's consulate in Chicago lists $60 for a single-entry visa, $90 for multiple entry up to one year and $120 for multiple entry over one year, in the fee category that covers study visas. The fee is non-refundable. Online applications through the Pakistan Online Visa System are paid by Visa or Mastercard.
How long is a Pakistan study visa valid?
The first study visa is granted for two years. After that, students renew inside Pakistan; extensions are granted a year at a time with one re-entry, and each renewal goes through security clearance again.
What happens if I overstay my Pakistan student visa?
Pakistan's immigration directorate charges $50 for an overstay of two weeks to a month, $200 for one to three months and $400 a year beyond that, and it doesn't waive these charges. The State Department warns that overstays can also lead to detention, arrest or imprisonment.
How long does a Pakistan study visa take?
Plan on about a month once you have your admission letter and no-objection certificate. NADRA lists two working weeks for processing, and Pakistan's immigration directorate gives security agencies 30 days to clear a study visa.
Can I work in Pakistan on a student visa?
We couldn't find an official rule that allows it. Pakistan's study visa requirements cover admission, no-objection certificates and security clearance, not employment, so budget as if you can't work and ask your school's international office before taking any job.
