Oman's employment visa: the job comes first, the visa follows
You can't file it yourself. An Omani employer gets your work permit and visa, and you get two years of multi-entry residence that renews with the job.
This is the visa for anyone hired by an Omani employer. Here's what it costs, what your employer has to do, and what the Labour Law guarantees you once you're there.

Employment Visa and Labour Permit
The standard route for foreigners hired by an Omani employer. The employer first gets a labour permit from the Ministry of Labour, then applies to the Royal Oman Police for the employment visa, which allows a two-year multi-entry stay and a residence card. Your residency is tied to your sponsoring employer.
- Timeline

Key requirements
- Job offer from a sponsor who is a legally competent local employer
- Labour permit from the Ministry of Labour matching your occupation and gender

- Passport valid for at least 6 months and two 6x4 cm photos
- Approval from the relevant authority for teaching, medical, media and religious jobs
- Register for a residence card with the Royal Oman Police Civil Status Department after arrival

Who Omani employers hire from the U.S.
A licensed Omani employer has to request this visa; you can't apply on your own. For Americans, teaching is one of the clearest routes. English-teaching jobs usually want a bachelor's degree plus a TEFL certificate and pay about OMR 600 to 1,200 a month ($1,600 to $3,100), often with housing and flights. Many schools recruit in spring for August or September starts.
Working remotely, freelancing or retiring? This visa won't cover you. Check your field, too: computer programmers became an Omani-only job in January 2026, with web designers following suit in January 2027.

From job offer to residence card
Your employer handles the first two steps. Plan on weeks, not days; documents that haven't been attested are a common hold-up.
- Work permit: your employer applies to the Ministry of Labour. The permit runs 24 months.
- Employment visa: your employer applies to the Royal Oman Police. The job title and gender on the visa must match the permit, and you must be at least 21.
- Arrival: you enter on the visa and take a medical fitness exam at a licensed private clinic.
- Residence card: apply in person within 30 days of entering Oman, or pay OMR 10 (about $26) a month in penalties.
Check two things before you sign
First, the safety picture. As of August 30, 2026, the U.S. State Department rates Oman Level 3, Reconsider Travel, citing armed conflict after U.S.-Iran hostilities, with the Yemen border region at Level 4. Second, your travel plans. If your residence permit expires while you've been outside Oman more than 180 days, your employer has to start a new work visa to bring you back.
What the visa lets you do, and what it doesn't
Spouse and kids can join
Your spouse and children under 21 qualify for a two-year family joining visa. The Royal Oman Police list a minimum salary of RO 600 a month (about $1,560), and your marriage certificate needs authentication by Oman's foreign ministry.
You can switch employers
Once your contract ends, you can move to a new employer without a no-objection letter. The old two-year re-entry ban was scrapped in 2021.
One employer at a time
You can't work for anyone else unless the Ministry of Labour is told and authorizes it, so side gigs and freelancing are out.
Protections in the Labour Law
A 40-hour week, at least 30 days of paid leave plus a ticket home for it, probation of three months at most, and no employer holding your passport without your written consent.
End-of-service pay
At least one month's basic wage for each year worked. A Social Protection Fund savings plan, with employers depositing 9% of basic wage, is set to replace it in July 2027.
Basic health coverage
Under Oman's Dhamani compulsory insurance scheme, your employer pays the premium for basic coverage.

Taxes on an Omani salary
Oman doesn't tax salaries today. From January 1, 2028, a 5% tax applies only to income above OMR 42,000 a year (about $109,000).
You'll still file a U.S. return. The foreign earned income exclusion covers up to $132,900 of 2026 wages if you're abroad at least 330 full days in 12 months. The U.S. has no Social Security agreement with Oman.

Oman employment visa: common questions
Can I apply for an Oman employment visa without a job offer?
No. The visa has to be requested by a licensed Omani employer, which first gets a work permit from the Ministry of Labour and then applies to the Royal Oman Police. There's no self-sponsored work visa for freelancers or remote workers.
How much does an Oman work visa cost?
The Royal Oman Police charge OMR 20 (about $52) for the employment visa. The employer separately pays a work permit fee of RO 201 to 301 (about $523 to $783) depending on the job class, as of 2026. After you arrive, a resident card costs RO 5 (about $13) a year.
Which jobs are closed to foreigners in Oman?
Oman reserves a growing list of jobs for its citizens. Under Ministerial Decree 501/2024, computer programmers and computer engineers became Omani-only on January 1, 2026, and web designers and operations analysts follow on January 1, 2027. Check your exact job title with the employer before you resign at home.
Can I change jobs in Oman without my employer's permission?
Yes, once your contract has ended. Since January 2021, workers don't need a no-objection certificate to move to a new employer, and the two-year re-entry ban was abolished. While a contract is running, you can't work for anyone else without Ministry of Labour approval.
How long is the Oman employment visa valid?
Two years from the date it's stamped in your passport, with multiple entries allowed. Your employer renews it along with your work permit as long as you stay in the job.
What happens if I stay outside Oman too long?
If your residence permit expires while you've been out of Oman more than 180 days, the Royal Oman Police say you'll need a new work visa to return. Keep your card current before any long trip.
Can I bring my spouse and children to Oman on a work visa?
Yes. Your spouse and children under 21 can get a family joining visa, valid two years for a fee of OMR 30 (about $78). The Royal Oman Police list a minimum monthly salary of RO 600 (about $1,560) for the worker sponsoring them.
Will I pay income tax in Oman?
Not before 2028. Oman doesn't tax salaries today. From January 1, 2028, a 5% tax applies to income above OMR 42,000 a year (about $109,000). Americans still file a U.S. return and can exclude up to $132,900 of 2026 foreign wages if they qualify.
