Mozambique Student Visa: Get Admitted, Fly In, Then File for Your DIRE
It's a small path: 13 U.S. students earned credit in Mozambique in 2019-2020. Here's what the embassies ask for, what it costs, and how Americans pay.
Visa-free entry for Americans covers tourism and business, not school. To study, you'll need an acceptance letter, documents from home, an embassy application that migration officials in Maputo approve, and a residence card after you land.

Student Visa
US citizens planning to study in Mozambique must apply for a student visa. This requires documentation from the educational institution and proof of financial support. The exact requirements and processing times may vary.

About that data card
Our requirements list ends with "Other supporting documents as required," and that line hides most of the work. Mozambique's embassies also ask for a medical certificate, a police record, a signed pledge to return home after your course, and proof of housing. Sweden's embassy wants the acceptance letter certified by the ministry. Processing quotes run from 4 to 5 days (Japan) to up to 30 business days (Brazil), so treat the timeline shown as a rough guide.

The fit
Built for students with a school and some Portuguese
Plan on Portuguese. The State Department says universities teach in Portuguese in general, with English for some courses at private universities.
This visa is tied to enrollment at a recognized school. It fits students who already speak some Portuguese, researchers with a host institution, and people coming through a U.S. college program. It won't work as a way for retirees or remote workers to stay.

Step by step
From acceptance letter to residence card
1. Get admitted, and get the letter certified
Mozambique's embassy in Sweden asks for an acceptance letter issued by the Mozambican school and certified by the ministry. At Eduardo Mondlane University, new students with a foreign high school diploma also need an equivalence certificate from the Ministry of Education and Culture, and fees are paid through BIM bank.
2. Collect your U.S. paperwork
Embassy checklists include a medical certificate (Japan's wants the exam done within 90 days of applying), a police record, proof of a scholarship or that you can pay tuition, a signed pledge to return home, and proof of housing (Sweden asks for at least three months). Americans can use an FBI check; the State Department's Office of Authentication, not the U.S. Embassy, authenticates it. Sweden's embassy wants the medical and criminal record certificates in Portuguese.
3. Apply through an embassy
You file with a Mozambican embassy, and SENAMI, the migration service in Maputo, approves it. The Washington embassy doesn't post a student checklist, so email it before you gather anything. Its general rules: a passport valid six months from entry, a visa used within 60 days of issue, and no refunds.
4. Land and file for your DIRE
Apply for the DIRE, the foreigner's residence document, at an immigration office within 30 days of entry. Under Law 23/2022, your school must tell migration about any change in your student status within 90 days, so dropping out or switching programs gets reported.
Where the official sources don't agree
Mozambique's embassies describe this visa differently: Japan's issues it for 30 days, single entry, while Brazil's lists 180 days. Visa-free rules differ too. Mozambique's decree allows 30 days per entry, extendable 30 more, and the State Department says up to 90 days a year. We checked all of this in September 2026. Ask the embassy handling your file which rules it applies.
Paying for it
Federal aid, Fulbright and the home-college route
At a foreign school, U.S. federal aid means loans only: Direct and PLUS loans can work, but Pell and TEACH grants can't. Grad PLUS closed to new graduate borrowers on July 1, 2026. Before you enroll directly, search the FAFSA school list by country to see whether your Mozambican school takes part.
The simpler route is a study abroad program through your U.S. college, because your home school processes the aid.
Fulbright
The 2027-2028 cycle offers one open study/research award for 6 to 9 months, with intermediate Portuguese and a host institution you arrange yourself. There are also two 9-month English Teaching Assistant spots at universities in Maputo, open to applicants with intermediate Portuguese or advanced Spanish.
Before you land
Plan for thin healthcare
The State Department calls Mozambique's health infrastructure weak and says medicine is often in short supply. Providers expect payment at or before treatment.
Buy evacuation coverage
The State Department encourages U.S. citizens to carry medical evacuation insurance.
Know the no-go areas
The advisory is Level 2 overall, but Do Not Travel covers Cabo Delgado, the Niassa Special Reserve and certain northern districts of Nampula.
Keep your passport on you
You can be taken in for questioning without it. Keep at least two blank visa pages free.

Mozambique student visa FAQ
Can I use FAFSA to study in Mozambique?
Yes, but only for loans at a Mozambican school. Americans at foreign schools can use Direct and PLUS loans, not Pell or TEACH grants, and Grad PLUS closed to new graduate borrowers on July 1, 2026. Search the FAFSA school list by country to check your school, or go through a study abroad program at your U.S. college, which processes the aid.
How long does a Mozambique student visa take?
It depends on SENAMI, the migration service in Maputo that approves applications. Mozambique's embassy in Japan quotes 4 to 5 days for student visas, while its embassy in Brazil quotes up to 30 business days. Apply well ahead of your start date.
What is a DIRE, and do students need one?
A DIRE is the residence document Mozambique's immigration service issues to foreigners. Mozambique's embassy in Japan tells student visa holders to apply for one at an immigration office within 30 days of entering. A temporary residence DIRE lasts one year and can be renewed for the same period.
What is the U.S. travel advisory for Mozambique?
The State Department rates Mozambique Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution (updated June 2025). It says not to travel to Cabo Delgado Province, the Niassa Special Reserve, or certain northern districts of Nampula Province because of terrorism.
Are university classes in Mozambique taught in Portuguese?
Mostly, yes. The State Department says universities teach in Portuguese in general, with English for some courses at private universities. Fulbright's Mozambique awards ask for intermediate Portuguese, though the English Teaching Assistant award also accepts advanced Spanish.
Do Americans need a student visa to study in Mozambique?
Yes. Visa-free entry for U.S. citizens covers tourism or business, and the Mozambique Embassy in Washington says the exemption doesn't apply when you're entering to study. Apply for a student visa through a Mozambican embassy before you travel.
How much does the Mozambique student visa cost?
The government fee is 9,837 meticais, about $154 at June 2026 exchange rates, under a fee schedule set in February 2024. Embassies abroad may charge their own amount in local currency, and visa fees aren't refunded if you're turned down.
What happens if I overstay in Mozambique?
The State Department says anyone without a valid visa is fined for each day they stay illegally. Students should apply for the DIRE residence document on time and renew it before it expires.
